LFP: RunnerHub, An Online Shadowrun Community

TL;DR- MMO meets Tabletop RPG with a dash of shadowrun Hoi Chummers, I'm here to talk to you today about / r/RunnerHub I can already see some of you scratching your heads, let me elaborate. Runnerhub was the baby of a few people who are regulars of /r/Shadowrun who got fed up with the sheer amount of people wanting to find a game. It is often a great struggle to somehow find a game in this hobby, and thus the hub was born. It is a structured meeting point for GMs and Players to meet online and play games. However, it goes deeper than that; all of the runs played on the 'hub take place in the same world, meaning a run you do on Tuesday could effect someone else's run on Friday. We currently average 2 sessions a DAY. Yes that's right, our GMs toil away in the shadows pumping out games for everyone to play. Fear not those who live in different countries, these runs are spread over different timezones meaning you probably won't have to wake up at 2am to get your role play fix. But wait there's more! There is a meta-plot afoot, led by our novahot team of enslaved Storymakers that we keep chained up in the basement.Recently there has been an entire campaign arc based around who will be the next mayor of Seattle. There are also threads to discuss said meta-plot in character as the players react to the ever changing world around them (That or just yell at keebs) So now I'm hearing you all say: "Gee that's great NotBob, but how do I, a lowly nub, join this Goliath?" Well Jimmy (That's your name now reader, accept it), you create a Fifth Edition character sheet using Chummer (Free) or Herolab and then post it to our special Character Review SubReddit for our sagely team of reviewers to look over (Checking for not just rules legality, but also to make you have a character you will enjoy playing on the hub.). After you've been approved by the sheet team, you can start posting in Runnerhub and applying for jobs with that character. Runs are primarily done over Skype and Roll20 (however a few rare GMs prefer teamspeak or Google hangouts). RunnerHub is the greatest group I've ever joined. I laughed, I cried, I accidentally started a musical (true story). 10/10, would recommend!
As a GM for the 'Hub, some of my best work has come outta here. Many stories, many tales, and having such a wide range of players and stories to work with really makes each session a complete experience. Come on and give us a try, you won't regret it!
I can honestly say that runnerhub has made me a better player, GM, and made me enjoy the game more than before. If you are thinking about trying it, seriously, go for it. I have had great experiences with runnerhub as well as the entire community. 9/10, It's excellent.
So, out of curiosity - how does it compare with the old SR: Detroit message boards? I used to run there, back in the day. Would be good to get a feeling for what kind of mood folks are aiming for at Runnerhub. Also, and this is more of an aside - how does one pick a GM/mission that suits one's personal playstyle? For instance, I tend towards low-violence/low-visibility solutions, and if "that guy" with the autocannon insists on opening fire 30 minutes into the game, you can get royally scragged even if you weren't at fault. It's good to have a say in how things are handled.

But onto your other question, a lot of runs are split between the two playstles (Black Trench coat and Pink Mohawk) and the GM will pick accordingly. GMs won't pick runners who only know how to kill things for a run where subtlety is key. There's something for almost everyone just from the sheer amount of games.
Thanks, NotB0b. How about this for a question, though? My preference tends to be towards a focus on actual RP over direct action, and as a result, I prefer to spend at the very least half my time on IC conversation - with fellow runners, NPCs, etc. Are missions/jobs usually very action-oriented? Are there multi-part/multi-session jobs, so players have more time for, you know, actually being in character? If it's anything like the organised play you see at conventions, it really won't suit me - there's never enough time to play your character rather than your statistics.

I play my characters like that all the time with constant banter, RP and IC stuff. There are a number of rare but existent multipart runs however it ultimately depends on the GM in question. Some can really get into the character, others find that a bit hard. So, as an example, I had a run where the Team had to infiltrate EVO R&D to steal a biological prototype. The majority of the run was trying to figure out how to get into there with a very quick combat at the very end when drek hit the rapidly oscillating cooling blades. There's also out of Game In character banter threads to really get that RP fix. EDIT: Have a watch of that if you're interested in one of the GM's playstyle
That doesn't sound too bad at all. Just a case of getting to know people and being up-front about your play-style, I figure. Last question, then, for the time being. I'm a bit of a grognard - I started playing in the 1st Edition (the hard cover is sitting proudly on the shelf, next to Rolemaster and the D&D red box). Played heavily through 3rd edition, but then I moved not just states or countries but continents. I did play some SR4 and about 4 sessions of SR5 since, but I cannot say I'm entirely up to speed, frankly. Of course, I know the game (ie, the campaign style), but there's bound to be chunks of rules that I'm not up to date on. It'd be great to have some patient people to call upon when it comes to vetting any character proposals. Do folks have the patience to get an old hand back up to speed?
Oh most definitely. The players and GMs are a mix of new people and veterans so there's always someone learning and someone teaching. We even crack a few light hearted jokes with our resident germans who seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge on the game. We have a separate subreddit for our team of sheet vetters to go over your sheet and make sure everyone starts off at the same power level and is warned of any traps. If you need any live help in designing a character we're also more than happy to help.
Sounds good. I'll be thinking up some character concepts to run by the local wizzes. Numbers can come later, but first and foremost, you got to have a concept that clicks with the mood and the theme of the place. Thanks for the heads'-up; see you on the streets, omae.
This sounds too good to pass up. ;) I'm gonna head on over to your reddit and see if the rumors you spread are true. :) Heck, for some shadowrun action, I'll even let you call me Jimmy.
