"Hollywood Knights" modern superheroes. (Thu UTC-5, Champions/Hero System, Will Teach)

The world changed with the turning of the millennium. Superhumans appeared without explanation. Justice, the first acknowledged super, said it himself, "It's like something out of the comic books I read as a kid. So that's what I'm going to do, be a superhero." Years later, superheroes and supervillains are just another fact of life. The official United States superhero team Americana is based in New York. Therefore, many heroes and villains have gone west to seek their fame and fortune. Los Angeles is the largest mecca for supers on the west coast. In 2001 after the fall of the World Trade Center towers, the Department of Homeland Security was formed. In addition to their responsibilities over Immigration and Border Protection, they have also been given the responsibility for oversight of supers operating within US borders. This has widely been regarded as a bad idea, as the territory squabbles with the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Prisons have shown. The big perennial scare is whether they will try to get Congress to pass a superhuman registration bill. However, overall public support of supers means that such laws haven't had much traction or success. This is a superhero campaign set in a modern day world almost identical to our own. Superpowers have only existed for a few years; while society has largely adjusted to this, there is still room for the characters to have major impact. The world is as realistic as possible with superheroes flying around, and the fantastic occurring on a semi-regular basis. Magic is real, while super-science and high technology "technobabble" accomplish wondrous (but not cartoony) things. Mutations and the refinement of natural abilities can reach similar levels. There are no aliens, alternate dimensions, or time travelers. Player Characters are expected to be (and will be respected as) heroes. This means they require a reasonably heroic motivation, and some degree of aversion to killing, and be able to work with other heroes and authorities. They will be fighting against everything from low-level street crime, to nefarious agencies, to supervillains. There will be a strong focus on character interactions and personal lives - to include non-combatative interactions with villains. There will be a high level of connectivity between characters, be they PCs, NPCs, heroes, villains, celebrities and civilians - like Spiderman, where they sometimes knew each others' identities, were friends, or had different attitudes or relationships between normal and super identities. In certain (split party) situations, players may roleplay NPCs. No previous experience with the Hero System necessary.
That sounds like an interesting idea, i wouldn't mind hearing more about this and giving it a shot. Count me in.
I'll supply the "more", but need some specifics of what you want to know. ;) Still working on getting used to Roll20 and getting campaign info up, Campaign Name is "Hollywood Knight" https://app.roll20.net/join/648703/GyAPKw. How familiar do you consider yourself with the superhero genre and the Hero System(Champions) rules? A bit of the first is nice, just watching a few of the recent Marvel and DC movies is probably sufficient. For the latter, experience is definitely NOT required. I'm more than happy to teach but will probably handle most(all?) of the details. Chris.
I consider myself pretty familiar. I sent you a pm with more information as well
Characters are built on 400(gasp!) points, meaning a lot of the math and decisions are front-loaded, but in play everything is pretty much a 3d6 roll low situation. Powers are going to be what you choose (build) them to be. Hero is designed with a "reason from effect" setup. Players decide what they want their character to do, what it looks like, and wrap the rules around it to get what they want. Especially given that I'm aiming for new players, I'll handle as much of the math and minutia as necessary. A good start for a character is a list of ten or so things you want the character to be able to do, and the number of points you're willing to spend on them doing it. I recommend (at least) Offense, Defense, Movement, Skills(all of them, individual skills are cheap) and Candy(a slush fund to round out what you forgot).
Sounds pretty reasonable, I would like to give this a try

I am interested, saw day and time zone in the title, what time are you thinking of playing? Also, is this going to be 5th or 6th edition Hero? I am well versed in the Hero system and willing to help out where I can with others. Kicking around a couple of character ideas, but which edition makes a difference (as 6th made a couple of character concepts a little harder to put into practice).
I would love to hear more about this. I am reasonably experienced with superheroes (watched most of the recent movies/shows, and have some supplementary knowledge of comics). I absolutely love point based buy systems, and a number like 400 makes me salivate, though I don't know how high it is in context with the system. Most of my RP experience is DnD and Pathfinder.
I might be interested as well. I have a bit of experience with HERO, but that was back in the 3rd Edition; describinh myself as rusty probably doesn't cover the half of it. Still, it shouldn't be too hard to get back up to speed. As far as gaming experience, I'm pretty versatile. I started gaming in the late '80s with D&D, and have since played that (plus PF), as well as Rolemaster, Shadowrun, GURPS and diverse White Wolf flavors, plus some dabbling here and there. My preference goes towards older gamers (age 35+) and a group that's in it for the story and the relationships, not the glory. My characters tend to start out with an idea of what kind of quirks and flaws I'd like to roleplay, then the personality builds up from that. Character strengths I try to make complimentary with the rest of the group's PCs. Everyone deserves a bit of limelight, and you won't see me trying to make a character that's "the best" at whatever our job description entails.
Sounds like fun. Unfortunately, you don't mention if it's a voice or text game, and I'm already in two games on Thursday as it is.
I am incredibally interested in giving this game a whirl. Super heros is probaly my favorit topic.
Chris, the link to your campaign page is non-functional.
If there's any spots open left, I'd certainly be interested. Though text would be a lot harder for me. (I prefer voice chat) I've been meaning to learn the HERO system and been aching to play something of the Super's genre. Anyway, let me know if there's a slot!
Answers in reverse order. Patrick: I blame my utter lack of familiarity with Roll20. I don't even know if I have to invite anyone here or they can join by themselves. Jasmine: Welcome aboard. Join if you can or wait until I figure out how to invite. Send a PM with an idea of what kind of character you'd like to play. Megan: Thursday at 7 PM my time is my current open window, but if critical mass prefers another night I can probably move it. I kinda prefer text at the moment, still trying to figure out Roll20. And I have a toddler, so voice might be difficult. Patrick again: Welcome aboard. That whole invite thing... Any suggestions? Rusty is fine. New is fine. Sounds like you'll fit right in, Send a PM with character ideas. Jordan: 400 points enough to make a character the star of their own movie. ;) And have everybody team up in the Avengers or X-Men movies. Most of the point wrangling I'll probably handle myself just to keep it easy. Join up, send a PM with character ideas. Jeremy: Time would be about 7-10 PM my time, day is aimed at Thursday but might be changeable. Edition is primarily 5E, but with bits kept from 4E and stolen from 6E plus some House Rules, most of which are extra options. Join up, send PM with character ideas. Full build not required. Govus, you've already sent PM... Everyone: What's the "more" you want to hear about? Known heroes and villains? Significant events in the timeline? The common and uncommon effects of having supers around? Something else? I've got LOTS of that stuff in my head, some of it even written down. Tell me the parts you want to know. Chris.
It would be good to know what you mean with a "realistic" world within the confines of the superhero genre. For instance - stage magic that actually works? Religious prayers with practical consequences? Especially when it comes to getting the "flavour" of a superhero right, it's important to know what the nominal source of our powers can be. Another aspect of this could be heritage. You did mention a lack of aliens and other dimensions, but how about Yetis (or the monster of Loch Ness and similar semi-mythological entities) or, say, a Rom ("gypsy") upbringing as a source of powers?
I would love to play, been dying for a good heroic game, but I can't do Thursday. I'm experienced with 1-6th Ed (have a 1st ed signed by George MacDonald around here somewhere) and love the Hero system with a passion. Been playing RPG's since '76 and am very focused on RP vs combat/encounter-play. If you move it to another night (Not Thursday, not Saturday) I'd love to join you.
I love text games! Perfect. You could also look for more players in this group, which is devoted to text-based games... https://app.roll20.net/join/570365/ysU18g If you enter your chat client for the campaign, there should be a place that tells you the join link (like the one I just posted) that you could send to someone. Also, if you enable the "looking for group" listing for your campaign, you can invite anyone that posts in the subforum there.
Megan, I was told the link I posted didn't work to join. https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/648703/ho... is the URL to the campaign page from "My Campaigns" for me, hopefully it works for everyone else too. Chris P, I started a thread on the above campaign page for everyone who can't do Thursdays to post their availability. Please do? Patrick, good question, complex answer. "Realistic" means the world works like our world works - in the GIJoe cartoon, if Joes shoot down a Cobra helicopter, the pilot survives the explosion and parachutes down - in the game world, that's not the expected results. "Stage" magic as performed in the real world is misdirection, illusion and sleight of hand; that doesn't suddenly become real magic - but it doesn't mean a "real" magician can't duplicate those tricks. Magic in the campaign requires a unifying theme, not "magic can do anything" - to butcher a D&D comparison, there are no generalist wizards, only specialists. In game, no-one as yet knows why or how superpowers exist, partly because it allows for multiple origins to be allowed. Nessie and Yeti are debatable; superpowers only "appeared" in 2000, so an old Romany family could have been practicing "magical" beliefs before which didn't work, might suddenly find those things now really do. Chris.
No, that link doesn't work. You can't see that page until you've joined the game. You have to use one of the two methods I mentioned. You need to find and post your join link, you need to set up a "looking for group" page that they can go to and post (and then you can invite them).
Chris - good answers, I like that premise perfectly fine. It's good to have some mysteries around. I'll hop out to the store and get Champions 6th Edition today. Given the size of such books in the past, that should give me ample reading material :)
id like to see how Champions game is run, make a character and understand the rules. dont necessarily need to play.
Megan: This is the link from the LFG page: https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/20559/hollywood... and per instructions: https://app.roll20.net/join/648703/GyAPKw Hopefully one of them works for people. Patrick: Champions 6E is two thick volumes and possibly out of print. Champions Complete is a condensed version of the 6E rules. I don't expect anyone to buy the books in order to play though. Eric: Spectators are welcome too. Chris.
Thurs-Sat nights I already have games. Pretty much anywhere else in there is fine. I'm PST, so after 5pm PST is idea.
