LF RP and casual/fun Group (D&D 5e)

Hey everyone, title says almost all of it. I'd love to find a casual fun group that enjoys more of the RP sides of things rather than just SMASH. While I am serious about gaming, I do not consider D&D as life, I like to laugh and have have a good time as the characters get into trouble. I know its cliche, but playing like the guys on the podcast Crit Juice would be awesome (granted I doubt I would ever be that funny). Those guys get really into the RP aspect but they make it fun and dont pretend its real life. In other words, I would love to actually try my hand at Role-playing but I understand I will not mesh well with people who are going to get upset because I "made a joke" or I "did it wrong" for something like laughing out of character. (Years ago in college this was actually my first D&D experience, a group that literally demanded staying in character 100 percent of the time and got irritated because I laughed...). I've recently gotten into D&D (5e) with some friends who were also all new. I DM'ed the starter campaign (mines of phandelver) and would now love to try being a player. Unfortunately my friends are more of the SMASH kind of players and do not really care to RP (instead they approach everything like a video game with a win/lose scenario). Combat is an interesting part of the game, and I would never want to get rid of it completely. However I would like to do something more than mindless "attack move attack move". I at one point tried to explain to my friends character motivation for the actions they were doing "why are you in this dungeon right now?". I was met with silence and blank stares. I feel confident with 5e rules having DM'ed my first campaign. I am 27 with a wife and kid. I'd be looking to play after said kid goes to bed, starting anytime from 8-10pm EST. And it would be nice to play the same night every week (or every other week). Would also be nice to find like minded group of guys to kick back and play with long term (although not a requirement). Ok I've written way to much. Hopefully someone has read my wall of text. I'd love to find a group with similar interest that is willing try each other out! Feel free to respond here or send me a message if anyone is interested.
Hey, if you need another player, let me know, I'm pretty comfortable with the 5E rules but I can't DM. Same timezone as you, also.
That sounds awesome. I do love having RP in my RPGs (otherwise I'd just play war games), but don't go in for 100% immersion. D&D is best, I feel, when a bit of funny stuff happens. I seem to fit the demographic pretty well. 26 with a wife and toddler here. I'm in Australia, so time may become an issue. 8:00PM EST is about 3:00PM for me. I'm off work at the moment though, so should be able to sit in for at least a few sessions. While I don't have any experience with 5E yet, I've GMed other systems in the past and quite enjoyed it. If players are willing to put up with some learner's hiccups, I can take a swing at DMing.
Great, I personally am not perfect, so I have no problem with hiccups (or even if you just make up a rule on the fly, lol). As far as timing goes, would it be easier to to start an hour or two later? I'd like to avoid staying up past midnight but have no problem starting at 8 pm or any time after (EST). Granted if we started at 11pm then I'd probably only be around for an hour, lol.
Anything from 6PM to 9PM would be perfect for me. (I could be there 'till midnight max so that'd give us a good 3 hours of DND.) Also 5E is pretty simple and straight forward so I doubt any hiccups will happen and it should be easy to figure stuff out if we got issues. 5E is great for that. Also anything but friday and saturday night would be best for me since that's usually when I work or got other stuff. (Like another session of DND.) And I'm the same as Marty. I don't go 100% RP but I do enjoy people who get into their character and put details in.

For the moment, earlier is probably better. Gives me more hours before the family gets home, so 8PM would work best. I come mostly from a Pathfinder background, so I'm looking forward to a less rule-heavy system that I can do a bit more "on the fly" stuff with. Are you guys happy with leaving maybe 2-3 more slots open? A party of two seems quite small and vulnerable to TPK. My only request as a DM is that you don't make any "goofball"characters. As in: characters who do stupid shit for the sake of doing stupid shit. I don't mind if your character is a bit thick, but not to the point of setting the party on fire for lols.
How quick is d&d 5 to learn never played? (ad&d, D&D 2nd-3.5 and pathfinder experience) I'm interested but not sure about the system.

If you played the previous DND, you pretty much know how to play 5E. It's Quicker, without the critical Do or Die rolls and much simpler I would say. Also, I'd like to have 5 or 6 people total personally so I'd be fine with 2-3 more. Finally, I'd like to know if we would be doing a sandbox game or a campaign? I'd prefer a sandbox game since we could build the world up as we go and add our own stories to it but I'm fine with whatever. I really just want to play some DND. :o
I'll probably use one of the WotC campaigns, but I'm happy to be a bit flexible with it. Having some pre-written material will give me more creative resources if you guys decide you just wanna hang out in town, or explore the wilderness, or whatever you like. I'm a big Planescape fan, so if you guys decide that you want to get a bit more out-there, we can introduce some new worlds through that. I guess what I'm aiming for is kind of an Elder Scrolls system, where there is a main questline to follow, but it can be persued at any time.
I am sold on the idea sounds fun.
Welcome aboard, Harley. Do you want a hand putting together a character?
That would rock.
I am interested in joining, i have alot of 5E experience already with my own handbook.
I can also help with character creation if anyone needs it. I think I already have a sorcerer that I've been meaning to use for a while but never could get to it so I'm most likely going to use him.

This thread seems to be coming along nicely. Tralakar, we've just gotten Harley's Fighter mostly operational. A sorcerer would be welcome. I'd like people to use the standard array in the Player's Handbook (15,14,13,12,10,8) and start at level 2, to help avoid insta-kills.
Hi Joshua. Did you have a character in mind? Looks like we have one fighter and one caster at the moment, but the board's still pretty open.
Max HD on the first two level, we roll both or max on level 1 and roll level 2? I need to pull that file back up. >.> Also since you are going to be DMing this, I might have a couple things that I'd like to talk to you about whenever we can.
Max for 1st, average or a roll for 2nd (though I may need pics if you happen to roll max. :P) Send me a message about any questions you have.
Hey there, I'd like to join up if possible I like the RPing aspect about as much as I like the combat. If you have a spot then I'd be happy to join up.
I think we've still got room. Any preference for class?
Warlock or Wizard would be great, if we need a martial character then I'd be interested in Monk.

Marty your idea of a campaign sounds great. Personally I'm not a fan of the pre-written campaigns (they seem a little flat and linear, (not much change from my actions to have any true effect on the story/world)). But if you think you can turn it into something magical than I'm willing to give it a shot. I do like the fact that you mentioned the option of doing "whatever". Currently I'm playing through Hoard of the Dragon Queen with the buddies I mentioned earlier, and I just find myself wanting more. What is the point of actually playing if my actions change nothing? Also going around the country side and killing ogres at random doesnt sound overly interesting. But a main story line that we could actually change the outcome and do whatever we wanted in a sandbox like fashion (if we so choose)? Thats the dream. My point is, a mix of both would be awesome and that is exactly what you described. I'm cool with 4-5 players. Yeah 2 is a little low. As far as what character I am thinking about playing... I prefer fun with the ability to do interesting stuff over anything else. So I am thinking either something like a wizard or even role-playing a "thick" Cleric that fervently follows his god (even to the point of foolishness) could be fun. And I'm all for avoiding Friday and Saturday. Does anyone have a day they prefer?
Alright, cool. Well that gives us a pretty even spread of characters. Joe may need to take monk unless we get another player who wants to be something dex-y. I've sent you all invites to the group. Hopefully we can get some sheets rolled up and work on some other specifics. Happy with any week day. Bit busy with the family on weekends.
Monk is fine. I noticed that you mentioned every other week as a possibility for games? That fits my schedule well. If it's not a problem for the other players I don't mind if the GM takes control of him on the nights I'm not available if you are wanting a weekly game.
Still looking folks
I would like to join, if there is still space. Would play a warlock (a good one, don't worry, won't sacrifice party to the fey)

Starting to have second thoughts about role-playing a cleric... Lol
That's fine. I'm sure we can make most parties work. We've currently got a fighter, a barb, a sorcerer and a monk, so maybe your earlier suggestion of wizard would be good?
Awesome that would be a blast. Didn't know if people were hard-core about comps.
We have a few players who don't know the system, and those who do haven't expressed much of an interest in power-gaming. Have you accepted the invite? Feel free to log in and start working on your sheet.
A cleric is always useful but they are more about bringing back a guy who is passed out than outright saving people. 5E got plenty of ways to heal and you don't go like 5 sessions still feeling the HP you lost 5 sessions ago. Everytime you get a long rest, you get all of your health and Hit dices back so we should be fine. Plus we got 3 melee fighters to soak a lot of hits and damage.
Still looking for players, by any chance?
Sorry, we filled up pretty quick. I can contact you if a slot frees up, if you like.
Yes, please!
Justin, I'm gonna need you to reply to me / accept the invite soon or I may have to give up your spot, man. :(
Is that stop still free? And is it for DnD 5e?
I'm afraid we don't have any spots open at the moment. The next available slot will go to Chelsea, as they asked first. I'll keep you posted if another comes up though. We'll be running 5E with a homebrew setting.
Okay, Thank you very much! Do you welcome new players? I can better specifics in a PM if you'd like.
New players are fine. I'm new to this edition myself. We'll be starting at 2nd level, so you may want to have a character of that level ready to go. We're going to be doing a fair bit of open-ended RP. Combat will be featured, but not necessarily the main event of every session... though the party's actions will determine how much trouble they get into.
