Map sharing

February 16 (10 years ago)
Hey guys, my friend wishes to DM me for our next game and to help him I offered making him or well sending him some of my old maps. They are basic city maps. Is there a way for me to send them to him?

The only way via Roll20 to do this is to Co-GM his campaign and you put the work into making the map pages for his campaign. I think he can make you a GM in his game and that will work, but you may have to be the campaign creator and make him a GM in your game.

Methods outside Roll20 are outside the scope of this forum.

Are these maps you made in your own Roll20 campaign, with the Roll20 drawing tools and marketplace or art-search graphics and such? You cannot transfer that kind of map to a different Roll20 owner. (There is a way to transfer it between your own campaigns, and a way to set someone else as co-GM on your campaign).

If it's a map you made outside Roll20, just email it to your friend. They can upload it on their account and place it on their Roll20 campaign.

Screen capture and e-mail. He can upload it as it is (turn the grid off). I use snippingtool for a lot of these.

problem is that my avatar face thing is on the bottom left and it covers part of the map... any chance to get rid of this

sure, hide it in settings.

To hide everything except the Map area, read this Hide UI thread and see the special code to load in your browser address bar.

I'm sure you'd only be screen capturing and emailing him pictures of artwork you made or have explicit permission from the artist to duplicate...

I've hand drawn maps that I have shared. I plan on posting an ISO one after my group runs it this Saturday if others are interested in using.

Thanks guys you were helpful but I kinda hope rolld20 will get like a share map button or something of the sort

I severely doubt any such button will ever be made, simply due to copyright issues.

An interesting Idea might be to have a button that exports the map with all the copyright images removed. That would certainly be technically possible, though there may be a whole chain of meta data that needs to be tracked with images to support it.

Technically it wouldn't need to remove all copyright material (since that would be everything graphical or textual), The Aaron. (Even one's own original drawings with Roll20 drawing tools are automatically copyrighted at the moment of original creation, that's just how copyright works nowadays.) Only needs to remove the copyright material for which you don't have permission to reproduce.

If there was a "Share map" button, and if this button removed any Marketplace assets for which you don't have permission to reproduce, it could be used (well within proper rights) to distribute copyright material for which the copyright holder -- namely the creator / artist -- gives permission.

Sure, that's what I was implying. =D

How about "Content for which the license would not permit downloading." =D

Well, I'm wanting to talk more about using Roll20 as a map-maker, but I've realized this is a "Specific Use Question" thread not a General or Suggestion up for discussion. So I'll save it for PM's with The Aaron or another thread that may come up. Is there a Suggestion topic covering this yet?
February 19 (10 years ago)
The only way Roll20 could be used as a map-maker would be to implement some kind of save map as a single image feature. MapTool has such a feature and I use it for most of my mapping.

HB - does MapTool cost money and is it as easy to create maps? Once you create it - you just drop it in?
February 19 (10 years ago)
No, sorta, and yes. You export the map as a single image. It saves it as a png by default I think. May be able to save it as jpg. Can't recall off the top of my head. It takes some getting used to and the drawing tools can be a little buggy with undo/redo. Better to just erase and re-do.
