Creating maps from tiles

March 17 (10 years ago)
Is there an easy way to generate a lot of a single tile over and over again, such as one might do if he were creating an entire map from a single grass token? The function I'm thinking of is similar to the eyedropper one might find in an application like Paint, etc.

There are limited options doing this in Roll 20, cutting and pasting tiles does work, and I am sure others will come along with more ideas.

However with that said, I personally have found that using a tool like Gimp/Photoshop/dungeon-painter-online to generate maps, then upload them to Roll 20 works better for anything more complex than a few dozen tiles.

OK, I just thought I'd ask. Thank you.

If you have access to use the API, look in the API forum. Someone made a script that helps with this, I believe it was The Aaron.

Also, if you go the copy-and-paste route, use doubling to your advantage: copy the first one, then copy both of the tiles, then copy all four, etc. If you're still going after about 20 doublings (over a million tiles), then you may want to rethink the size of your map or the size of your tiles (or both).

How do you copy more than one tile? I was not able to do this.

Holding the shift key you can select multiple objects and copy them. It helps when placing large numbers of the same token.

One of two ways:

1. Hold shift to click on more than one tile.
2. Drag a selection box around the tiles. Note that depending on tile layout, this option might also select other tiles that you don't want included. Use the first option for more precise selection.

After you've got them selected, right click to Copy. Then paste.

I see. That's very helpful. Thank you.
