GIMP Templates for making Roll20 Grid-sized TokenTool Overlays

Hey everyone, For anyone who uses TokenTool for creating Roll20 tokens, here are 2 GIMP Templates for creating your own overlays in TokenTool. Circle Template: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2cjFJTrU5bHclRl... Hex Template: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2cjFJTrU5bHWnZ1... The templates are both 420 by 420 pixels in size, which is 6 times the resolution of a standard Roll20 grid square (70px). That should be plenty large enough for Medium, Large, Huge, and Gargantuan creatures, as well as large enough for zooming the tokens for your players. Here's how the templates work. There are 4 layers: Magenta Mask: TokenTool uses this magenta color for masking out the outside of the token. Make sure you don't have any pure magenta in your overlay. Bump Map: This is used to create the Bump Layer below with the 'Bump Map' filter. Leave this alone if you don't know what a 'Bump Map' filter is. Bump Layer: This layer creates the illusion of a raised bevel on your texture. You can turn it off it you want a flat looking token. Texture Layer: This layer determines what the texture of your overlay is. I have a the pink marble texture (included with GIMP) added already. If you want to change it, use the Bucket Fill tool to fill it with a pattern, and fill the whole selection. For the Texture layer, I'd recommend low saturation colors. High saturation colors blow out the bump map, and diminish the 3d effect. You can use the Colorize Effect to color the textures for different tokens. Save your finished overlays as a .PNG file. To upload the overlay into TokenTool, go to File->Manage Overlays and drag the .PNG files into that window. Don't forget to set the Width and Height of the token to either 420, or any multiple of 70. That way your token is already scaled to fit the Roll20 grid.
This is fantastic!!!! Thank you so much!!! Is there any way to reduce the thickness of the line by around half?
I'm assuming you're referring to the thickness of the ring? Hide everything except the Texture Layer. Right-click the Texture Layer and choose "Show Layer Mask" Use the Fuzzy Selection Tool (Magic Wand for you PS users) to select the black circle. In the Select Menu, choose "Grow" and type in how many pixels you want the interior of the ring to shrink. Use the paint bucket tool (set it to "Fill Whole Selection") to fill the selection with black. Alternatively, if you want a soft edge: Before you fill the selection with the, go to the Selection menu, choose "Feather", 3-5px should be enough for most cases. You will need to recreate the bump map layer as reducing the thickness of the circle will throw the effect off. BTW, these template are loosely based off of this tutorial: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6908881/Creati... The process of creating the bump map layer is explained in Step 3. I prefer my method of creating overlays because it doesn't require flattening the image (and therefor having to recreate the entire process every time you want to use a different texture). Hope that helps,
I can't post examples of Tokens I've made with these overlays because I tend to use various images I find on Google Images for the pictures (and therefore I don't have the rights to post them publicly). But here some blank examples of the overlays I've made: (These are all made with the built-in textures in GIMP)

I recommend including a square template as well.
Thanks for these!

Indeed, those would not be hard to convert for TokenTool use.
