Advice on what pre-made, free campaign to use

Hi, My and my friends were thinking about trying to do a campaign on Roll20 soon. We don't have the skill to make one, so we were wondering what are some good, free campaigns to play? Preferably some for of D&D, not sure what edition everyone wants. We would have 3-4 PCs and a DM, obviously. The DM and at least one of the players are experienced, while me and another friend are new to Roll20 and "tabletop" RPGs (although we understand the concept and basic game play). So, any suggestions for a free campaign?

Hi, i've never tried Pathfinder but people seem to like it and i believe it to be a simple offshoot of traditional D&D style play, to which end i'd recommend starting a new campaign and selecting 'journey-to-the-red-keep' as the module or 'heroes of belfum' perhaps. If you don't like pathfinder then i've also heard that it can be a simple task to convert it to use a D&D system but the advantage of pathfinder and d&d 3.5 is that they are open source and most of the information you'd need is out there free of charge :) Hope that helps.

If you're talking about modules made specifically for Roll20, you're pretty much looking at running a Pathfinder game, as all the Modules currently offered in the Marketplace (apart from one FATE module and a couple of independent games) are for Pathfinder. I don't actually recommend starting with Pathfinder if you're new to RPG's. Having recently DM'ed a nine month long campaign with the system (and I am an experienced DM that has been playing since 1981) I found it to be be extremely challenging and complex to learn and run combats. I have also not tried any of the modules currently offered in the Marketplace, so I can't speak to their quality or lack thereof. If you and your friends want to try D&D I would actually recommend downloading a simpler free game such as Basic Fantasy or Labyrinth Lord, along with some free fan produced modules. Game downloads and a ton of free adventure modules modules can be found at: http://www.dragonsfoot.org/ http://www.basicfantasy.org/ http://www.goblinoidgames.com/labyrinthlord.html

I would agree with Jason on this one and go look at Basic Fantasy. I've ran that system for many years. it is very simple system that teaches the basics of the d20 system but it is robust enough for good enjoyment.

Do the whole group a favour, pick up Dungeon World and learn it (it'll take a single session, the rules are VERY friendly to new players) and play a game that you all make together. Use your brilliant brains to slowly build a world with one another and throw yourselves into the story you all build. Not only will you have a simple, robust system for playing, but you'll also unlock the way to make your own campaigns. It's a lot less scary than it sounds. In fact it's enormous fun for players AND the DM alike. Roll20 supports character sheets for it (free) and the rules are available for free (though if you have $10, the pdf is lovely and contains some inspiring artwork). Roll20 is free, and my advice is free, so this whole thing costs you not a cent. Or ignore my advice, that's cool too, I'm not the boss of you :) Have fun!
