QUICK READ RECAP The above water assault group continues to venture deeper and deeper into the uppermost, dry level, surmising that it may be used as nothing more than a holding area for non-water breathing prisoners as the strange, sterility of it's clinical abandonment becomes increasingly more evident. Raising the portcullis of a strange prison, they find an aged man in a far corner, weak, and near death, who, under questioning relates a strange story of how he and possibly other adventurers stumbled into the submerged lower cavern to be immediately attacked by a large number of sahuagin, possibly the sole survivor of the atrocity. In his last moments, he manages to relay a message with serious intensity to Kyra leaving the party mystified of it's possible meaning. Later, the group happens upon a secret treasure room, loaded with magical items! Shenjo takes a risky chance, and dons an unknown magical cloak, instantly changing into a frightening manta ray sea creature right before everybody's eyes! Below water, having stumbled into an areana full of sahuagin watching a death match, luck is on their side, as they are able to close and bar the door they had just opened, fleeing with great haste up the flight of stairs in the NW corner, with Balfon luckily sensing and opening a secret door, bringing it to the party's attention. All members quickly enter the unknown hallway beyond, closing the door just as pursuing sahuagin pass by on the other side! Time remaining on the underwater breathing spell and other important spells continue to count down. Will they succeed in their mission, or drown trying ! DM SESSION LOG 150516 Spells memorized. Tralann - hypnotism, magic missile, invisibility, wall of fog, web Argo - 4x magic missile, mirror image, blur, water breathing* Karmadel: 5-1st, Cure light**, Endure Cold x2** (7-1/2 hours) /5-2nd /1-3rd Bless, Protection evil / cure serious x2, hear heart x2, water fist Upstairs group moves forward... Bjorn asks "Is there anyone in there?" and doesn't hear anything. He raises the portcullis. Argo surmises that the upper level is a staging, holding area for prisoners and non-water breathing creatures. Bjorn finds a shackled old man in the NW corner talking to himself, he relays the message to the group. Marine offers the dying man some water. He wants to drink much more, but the marine limits his available consumption to a small amount. Bjorn pulls one of the shackles out of the wall. Argo asks the dying man "Who are you and how did you come to be here?" He weakly explains that he is/was a thaumaturgist and leader of party of adventurers from the hold of the sea princes, sent by prince monmurg to investigate strange goings-on in the former lizard man lair. He explains that he came with a possibly party of 4 others, but has a hard time remembering who came with him and who he was shackled with, and accidentily explored the underwater sea cave wherupon they were immediately attacked by a large number of sahuagin. He can't remember if he's been here for months or years, possibly a sole survivor. Bjorn pulls out the other shackle holding the man. He grabs Kyra and says intently, "Remember metamorph" and then falls down...dead. The underwater assault group... Oceanus closes the door. Sahuagin warriors grab their weapons. Karmadel bars door. Large seated Sahagin motions to warriors making a shooing motion with his hand. The warriors begin to move. Some sahuagin open three sets of doors..to the north, east and south. Karmadel goes up the stairs by the previous shark battle. Sahuagin attack Borga for 6 hp of damage reducing him to 5 hp of life. Kysh and Oceanus join Karmadel upstairs. Borga flees combat. Attack of opportunity reduces Borga to 2 hp of life. The above group... Shenjo finds a secret room and casts detect magic. Many items glow. Party contemplates how to get into the locked stone coffer. Leaxle finds and disarms a thrusting blade trap. The fighters pry open the box. Shenjo wears the cloak and disappears with a manta ray in his place. Kyra surmises maybe the cloak was what the old man was referring to. Shenjo puts the cloak in his back pack for being bold and taking the chance to wear the garment. The underwater assault group... Karmadel's sword starts to sing. "I ain't got no body..." Balfon senses a secret door and opens it. The party hides in the hallway behind the secret door and closes the door behind them just as the pursuing sahuagin come up the stairs outside! Karmadel casts 2 cure light wounds on Borga for 4 and 8 hp of life bringing him to 11 full health. Oceanus senses and opens another secret door at the end of the hallway opening up into a green tiled room in the NW corner of submerged level 2. There is a seaweed bed in the NW corner, a spear propped up in the SW corner, a mirror hanging on the E wall with a closed coffer beneath and a hallway leading due E to a pink colored room. Group adjourns for the evening. Whew! That was a close one! Definitely one for the record books on how to not get sliced to ribbons, by using the old noodle and giving your pursuers the slip! There were a lot of great ideas, proper usage of skills, surmising the facts accurately, being more careful, taking precautionary measures, being ballsy and making educated guesses that payed off big! Good job to everyone that pitched in for that session, your effort was appreciated, and really showed in keeping you all alive to fight another day. Now what magic items could possibly be in that velvet bag. Could Argo's assumption be correct? Could it contain more underwater "accessories" that might further support the old dead man's statement that he and his now dead party "were equipped for underwater activities". I wonder....
I'm really Thinking we need to Open that bag and see what is contained in it. the vials with Draughts in them are mostly likely Draughts of Water Breathing. So what could possible be in the bag?
IF this stash is as we suspect -- the tools/materials from the prior group, then all the potions and scrolls *should* be for healing or water breathing, etc. and 'water protected' by being in those stoppered ivory/bone tubes. It might be worth the risk to see what's in that velvet bag since it 'detected' so strongly. Not certain how much time we have to do it (although we are supposedly resting and recharging) -- to have a human change into the detected plate mail armour and perhaps (this is iffy) the dwarf cleric into the magic chain armor. Plus those 3 shields -- one large 2 small -- the cleric could use one as a swap for her own non magic item. Several other things are 'to be determined' though... those books... again, at first guess, specially treated to be 'waterproofed' since the pages were coated in some substance which would serve that function. Then again, without an identify spell of some sort, any of the magic is 'suspect' and we take a chance of risking the expedition's success by messing with any of it at the moment. (that and obviously, the magic did not help the prior party survive!)
As for the above water team -- I suspect we are about to get into another similar situation with the coffer below the mirror. (keeping fingers crossed that mirror is not a trap of some sort -- OR -- the seaweed. (maybe it's a food or medical supply for the sahuagin?) Not certain about a spear just laying on the floor/against the wall... a bit haphazard to say the least. Still, explore and 'loot and scoot' since we ARE being pursued by a large number (bet it's more than 2 dozen!!!) sahuagin up and down the corridors below and on our level. Hopefully, we have not put ourselves into a dead end 'hidey hole'. (or that sword starts singing show tunes just as those sahuagin come back by outside.)
On another note -- who is carrying the hand scripted 'maps' of the levels given by the lizardmen? Any way we can shuush out where those secret rooms are in relation to those maps? (yes, they are pretty crude but... any clue might help...)

Those handwritten maps are probably in the possession of someone in the above water team, but are available for examination in the 'in-game' handouts.

If the assumption is correct, with regard to the other magic items found, the question would be then, who in the above water team would use the items, and how would those enabled adventurers assist the below water team? Would they help them fight? Extract them to safety?
Well We got Karmendal Trying out the Plate. I'm would like and plan to check out the Velvet bag. I would suggest those that can use a shield change theirs out with the ones that can Glow magic. By the description and thinking about it some i'm thinking the crap on those books is some sort of protective coating from salt water and most likely a spell book. But whats could possible be in that other Bone tube with Ivory stoppers? Who wants to check that out? That long sword whos proficient in it? The scrolls i'm thinking are hands down best for the Pure magic users. the dwarven chain who can fit in that? With all the noise we been making It might be best to start thinking of why haven't they come yet. Could it be because they are assuming we're just prisoners making noise? Are they done sinking this fortress? Where are the Saughin leaders? How much intel have we gathered? What do we know already? I"m thinking we need to asses some of these questions as well.

Kyra is a dwarf cleric with shield. She could take the medium shield (or a small in a pinch) --- *maybe* try the chain mail although that would be going backward an armour level (or forward depending on the magic involved!) -- study & use the surmised cleric scrolls. (believe there were an assumed 2 mage-like and 2 cleric-like scrolls). The 'drops'/doses in the ivory/bone tubes MAY be heals and water breathing. That other one -- total mystery. We had detect magic but not identify magic -- unless that is another one of those 'innate skills' one gets for just being a mage anyway (like we discovered with read & write). Those books -- yes, that 'gunk' is probably water proofing. BUT, is it some special tome given to them or their own personal spell books 'waterproofed'? Again, seems like that is something to be studied 'later' (not while in a dungeon)... unless one assumes there is an uber spell someone might learn that saves the day. Biggest issue is -- how much time are we spending stripping down and gearing back up? And, will doing this help or hamper our performance if they are NOT 'simple' magic items -- like that leather cloak.
A tome would give off a stronger magical aura than what spell books give off. and from the sounds of it, these are low level spell books. thats my educated guess. i don't think those draughts are healing tho, how are they going to use them underwater spells or kits would make more sense for healing.
heh... that's why I'm the cleric -- how magic works is something out of my league... well, non-praying/god given "magic".
Try playing a 20 in char without meta gaming it :p kinda hard at times :p
i think our best bet would be compare and contrast. a healing potion is a healing potion, so compare the vials to the ones in our loot, if the liquid is different, its most likely water breathing of some sort. then we test by trying to breath in the water. if we can, i would suggest we get some help underwater, sine im sure in character, we would be worried for the lower party as we have yet to get the attention of the Sahuagin. Thinking about it we did this ass backward. the attention getters should have been underwater, a threat from above can only go so far, wish this would have hit me before but oh well.
Don't beat yourself up too much Paul. Hindsight is 20/20, I mean if all things are equal you guys were pretty much hosed on this whole adventure/module/whatever. First off you didn't come prepared to deal with these "underwater monsters" and secondly even if you had there was no way that you could have gotten gotten the information that the council wanted and gotten out without being detected by someone or something. And then a fight would have ensued and those lucky enough to escape with their lives, probably would have sworn off underwater adventures for a good long time. Hells bells I'd rather take on a friggen dragon than this horde of sahuguin! Good luck to you all I hope you kick their asses get the info you need and get the heck outta there with all your pieces intact. And if not then you can always roll up a new character.

Do sahuguin come in 'hordes' or is it a 'swarm' -- or maybe a 'school'?
