ugggggg. i have applied and applied......

I have applied to about 15 different games and have received NOTHING!!!!! here is what I put down and if anyone is playing a dnd 3.5 game plz let me know. Hello. I have played dnd 3.5 with 4 friends here in new mexico for about 3 years. I have however only played with the THOSE GUYS. About a month ago everyone moved due to jobs and what not so something I have done pretty much every weekend for about 3 years stopped instantly. So needless to say I am interested in playing again and looking for a game. However this is my first time every playing online so u might have to start a little slow for me.... About the character I am interested in playing, He is a swordsage from tome of battles. Everything he knows is self taught due to him living and fighting on the streets to survive for as long as he can remember. Growing up he came to the conclusion that he was different with a sword than most and after weird things started happening (i.e he sword burst into flames during a fight where he was being mugged) he started to train and use his abilities to make money. If he had to mug someone for food and scare them half to death or save a orphanage and demand a reward, he did it. Why should he care about anyone or what they love if he never had anyone care about him? He isn't cruel or evil (actually he will be the first person in the room to smile and laugh) but he WILL survive. He is very very chaotic nuetral. If he is doing good and is stable for the time being it would not be weird for him to donate to a charity (definitely if it is for kids on the street) If he is not doing good he would rob the same charity to get by.HIs goals and ambitions at this point in his life is what anyone would want in his situation. Where did he come from? How can he do what he can do? Are there anymore out there like him? Where will he sleep and what will he eat tomorrow?

I recommend being more open about your choice of characters. There are an overwhelming amount of players on Roll20 in contrast to relatively few DM/GM's. Many may have restrictions, especially in regards to certain books like Tome of Battle. Thus, finding an open slot and a DM willing to allow such characters might be exceptionally rare. Here's a rewrite I recommend: "Hello, I have minimal experience with 3.5 Edition, predominantly in-person games. I would like to play a character that is down on his luck, and willing to do anything to survive the struggles of daily existence. As his views are predominantly on survival, and his view of following the law is flexible, he would likely be Neutral or Chaotic. Additionally, he is morally gray, so he would likely avoid the extremes of Good and Evil."
That makes a lot of since actually. Thank u for the advice
It would also help to know if you are open for other games. That tends to make things go a bit smoother. I know a lot of the players in my one-shots are going to be pretty new and, as long as the group and DM are ok with it and willing to help out, R20 is a good way to learn new stuffs without crazy commitment.
Another suggestion I would make is to more completely fill out your profile page, especially the "Actively Seeking Group For" section. A well-written, detailed bio never hurts either. You don't have to tell your life story, but definitely say something about your gaming background and perhaps what you're looking for in a Roll20 game.
From a DM's standpoint, DMing is actually quite the full time ordeal. I have to make up the adventure, the maps, the NPCs, the traps, and all the tiny things in between, all while managing my players, so it makes sense that there are fewer DMs than players. Unfortunately, that means that campaigns are generally full at the time they're made. My current campaign, I launched 2 weeks before its first game and could've filled my roster in the first few days. Here's some advice from my end: - Be Flexible . Sometimes DMs are looking for a diverse party so they can make diverse encounters. Without a tanky/bulky class, you run the risk of the enemies killing off the players because you have 5 wizards with only 8 life. That, and it's more fun to DM when you have to think about 'what would the fighter in my campaign do in this situation? What about the wizard? What about the rogue?' instead of 'Ok, I have 5 rogues...let's just...make the same encounter.' - Show a positive attitude . Instead of 'You'll have to be patient with me because i'm new', try writing it like this: 'I'm new, but I learn fast and i'm excited to play with you!' I would rather take a fast learner and someone excited for the campaign over someone who's been playing D&D for 35 years but is apathetic to it all. - Make sure you read the time and ensure that you can adhere to it . I get nervous when I read someone saying 'Your game is on Tuesday...I can try, but no promises', because I don't want my campaign to be empty as soon as I start it. If it's a time you can make, say so! I love to hear that. - Ask questions about the campaign . One, it gets DMs talking to you, and when they talk to you, they're more likely to remember you. But two, it shows genuine interest in the campaign. Some good questions are 'What is the current party made up of?' 'Are there any race/class restrictions?' 'About how long does the game run for?' These questions will also help you gauge if you really want to join. That's just a few suggestions I can think of. Goodluck!
I would also add that you should pay very special attention to any and all instructions from the DM that pertains to applying for their game. I always notice when an applicant doesn't do what I ask, or asks something that I already answered. Missing an obvious detail gives them a strike, and puts them, "down a notch," when it comes to selecting players. All other things being equal, I try to choose "serious" gamers over casual gamers. A serious gamer is one that pays attention to the DM, learns the rules to the game, and avoids metagaming. A serious gamer does not try to tell another player how to play their character (<---some GMs can even be guilty of this!). But finding those gamers usually takes a few sessions of actual play, and those are the players that get invited to future games. If you are totally new to RPGs, mention how you got interested in them. Did you come from playing computer games? Did you read the Dragonlance novels? Or did you see Lord of the Rings movies and it piqued your interest? That is more informative to me than the player that says, "I'd like to play," or, "pick me!," with very little else to make me interested in them over another applicant. You have to show some personality and be interesting. It may feel, "unfair," but when selecting players, DMs can afford to be picky. If you want to get picked, you need to stand out a bit. Years of gaming experience aren't as important as you might think. There are plenty of lifelong gamers that prefer gaming styles that I abhor, so don't think that being a newbie is some kind of handicap. For some reason, there are players out there that don't seem to read the rulebooks. It's okay to be new. It's okay to still be learning the rules. But, for goodness sakes please time some time to read the rules. Ask questions between sessions if there is something you don't understand. But do get around to reading the rules. One of the most impressive things a newbie player can say to me is, "I've completely read the player's handbook, and have a good grasp of the rules."
Quintus made some great points. As a DM, some of my favorite players had no experience, and some of the worst have been playing as long as I've been alive. A common thread with the more difficult players does indeed seem to be that they don't pay much attention to details the DM asks for. For that reason I will sometimes add odd requests to my recruitment threads to see who is paying attention. It seems like a lot of trouble, but it's a lot more trouble to deal with problem players.
Hi, im a DM, been playing for over 30 years, and i thought i would add my comments to this post.. Firstly i will post your post, and make comments based on my opinions if you had tried to join one of my games. Hello. I have played dnd 3.5 with 4 friends here in new mexico for about 3 years. I have however only played with the THOSE GUYS. *A dm is not really interested in who you have played with, some arnt even bothered how long you have played. but its always a good point to state that you have been playing for a few years. This tells the dm, that you have knowledge of the game. I myself dont mind if a player either never played but has experience with roll 20, or has played with no experience with roll20.. as it only means trianing in one and not the both. About a month ago everyone moved due to jobs and what not so something I have done pretty much every weekend for about 3 years stopped instantly. So needless to say I am interested in playing again and looking for a game. However this is my first time every playing online so u might have to start a little slow for me.... *Remove the start a little slow for me.. A dm who picks characters will no doubt pick characters who can play in most cases.. Thus the game does not want to be slowed down. You are aware how to play D&D just not how to use Roll20.. So the game can play.. If you need help with roll 20, people are more than willing to assist. *Simon S made great comment abvove regarding your character, A lot of dm's myself included, like to put together a party consisting of the main groups, 1 mage, 1 healer, 1 tank, 1 rogue (note: not exactly) what i mean is 1 from each type of class. Now based on your comments above your character is a Thief/Swordsage. Now if i already have a thief, i will skim your character, however fi you used something along the lines of simons post, then you could play any line of character, which would peak interest. Now. im gonna list some of my pet peeves. *these are people i do not take on. 1. players who do not read the instructions thoroughly. (i get this all the time, I always post the realm, but regularly get comments, like, if you let me know the realm i can create a background according)... Read all instructions carefully and build your character to them 2. players who say they may be able to make it. "If you cannot definately make a date and time, do not apply its not worth it. 3. Players who post simple one liners.. (my application, i would liek to play a blah) Always make your post stand out.. Give me everything i need to know. (if you can example scenarios, of your game play) for example : Dum Dum the half orc barbarian, With an int score of 5 . Dum Dum, a nickname, given by the characters, since this was a first level campaign the character took on the name, The characters found him wandering and gave him the name due to the lack of intelligence.. Because he was a powerhouse (not exactly min maxing) but strong, the other chars could concentrate more on their non tank characters. Dum Dum was the beef of the outfit, the characters sort of had to control him.. He would do what was asked. to give an example.. in one scenario, he stared at a closed door, while the characters listened, Then asked "Dum Dum Smash" one of the characters said yes, as they knocked on the door, Dum Dum then walloped the door, busting it off the hinges, and killing the two men behind it who were comming to answer the door. He knew only a few words, which the characters had tought him and his prized possesion was his double handed double bladed axe, which he nicknamed "Betsy". 4. Players who say. I can play whatever you want " your character is different in that you give details about your characters background. etc. so it gives the DM a good idea. Now some additional points Ask questions.. Make sure they are not already answered in the instructions.. (as already said, if it is a valid decent question it gets the DM talking to you, Once a dm is talking then you get acknowledment) I have applied for approximately 50 games since joining, i am playing 1. So do not worry about your posts not being accepted, this is the norm.. Just keep trying and basing on.. eventually you will be invited to a game.. OF course the other option is to get together a group of players.. Once you have that, advertise for a DM. Someone might take on the role. Well just my 5 cents worth.. Cheers keith
From someone who knows just how many dozens of applications a GM has to sift through for most publicly posted games... formatting and presentation can also be a factor. A huge text-wall in one solid paragraph is not something I usually look forward to reading... For example, below is my own application to a game that's starting up shortly. I lay it out in section so if someone's looking for particular characteristics, they can skip over the rest and just focus on what's important to them. ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ BIO I'm in my 30's, have reliable internet, headset, and cam if needed. Skype, Google Handouts, Vent, etc are all fine. I've been playing various flavors of RPG's since I was a kid; though primarily Computer Based( TSR GoldBox, ToEE, IWD, NWN ,etc). Reading the AD&D Handbook at the library before even knowing D&D was a thing was a common enough diversion. Waaaay too many M. Weiss/T. Hickman, Modesitt Jr, and Salvatore novels... you get the idea. I'm a generally helpful person in-game and out, and professionally lead the Help Desk team for my company. You'll usually see my name popping up frequently in the Specific Use forums and the Pathfinder Reddit sub. I've also had some teaching experience, working adjunct at a college, so showing folks how a system or tool works is no problem. I live in my own apartment, so familial / environmental distractions during a game are non-existent. EXPERIENCE The last few years have been mostly focused on Pathfinder with a little D&D 5e on the side. I've DM'd both along with a few 4e games as well. On occasion I sit down with folks to run through a Roll20 tutorial Module to show them how to get the most out of the VTT, or just some PF basics in general. I have 1200+ hours under my belt in Roll20 and have just finished a year and a half long Carrion Crown campaign. I'm currently playing Reign of Winter , Shattered Star , and a pair of homebrews . I've played a ton of one-shots and a good chunk of Runelords , but was never able to finish it due to other player attrition. PLAYSTYLE I'm a tactically minded combatant, but I make a point of being useful out of combat too (I love playing Skill/Knowledge/Utility classes like Rogue , Ranger , and Wizards ). When I play casters, I'm generally more of a disabler than a blaster... I prefer to make life easier for the melee's to do their thing instead of just snuffing out enemies; it's a lot more fun for everyone that way. I generally avoid min-max'ing (you won't ever see a stat below 10), but I do always try to be effective to the group; either contributing directly or supporting a teammate's awesomeness. I'm more of a climb-through-the-window type than kick-in-the-door type, unless the character is intentionally that straight-forward. I do however often struggle with interrogation encounters...not always knowing what questions to ask or what to DO with someone after you've caught them(bit like a dog chasing cars, actually, now that I think about it...) FLAVOR Personality-wise, I'm always toying around with voices and quirks for my characters. Some groups and characters draw me out more than others, of course...For example a Dwarvish Scottish Brogue is hard to maintain, but a stiff backed (bad, but in a good way) Brit accent or Ricardo Montalban wannabe I can keep up all day and really get into. I rarely play ' silly ' characters, but keep a sense of humor about them. I always try to come up with some particular quirk or behavioral trait for uniqueness...a verbal tick, an obsession over a certain ale, habits warding away bad luck, etc. I try to describe actions in flavorful detail when I find the right kind of group that reciprocates(Sometimes a given group just doesn't try too hard to be descriptive, but others flourish). I find it makes for a much more memorable individual and much more interesting for the group than, " Attack 22 vs AC for 20 dmg " vs. " I arc my blade slicing at my opponent leaving a 20 HP gash .". When combat is dragging on though, I'm very quick to just get my rolls out and add them up for everyone's convenience. TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE I've use Roll20 very heavily, and have gotten pretty decent with macros, templates, and abilities( https://wiki.roll20.net/Macros_-_Pathfinder_Examples ). I enjoy helping folks out, so I'm open to questions or suggestions if anyone needs a hand with their setup. If you read the Specific Use forums , you've definitely seen me contributing my two cents here and there. I have a very good head for game mechanics and chime in now and then to ask if someone remembered to add a bonus from this or that, or similar tidbits. Any contradictions or questions I might have of the GM, I usually use a private whisper instead of interrupting game-play, unless it's majorly game-changing. Most, if not all, GM's I've played with have mentioned at one point or another how helpful I tend to be with their games. I'm usually the first person to ask the GM for a Quest Notes and Party Loot handout so I can keep track of the group's trinkets, selling off to merchants, major quest points, etc. MISC and AVAILABILITY I'm available to play this particular game Sunday, Monday , or Wednesdays any time after 8PM EST (-5GMT) for about 4-5 hour sessions. It's extremely rare for me to miss a session; I'm VERY consistent . However I DO run a Helpdesk team and sometimes folks just don't have issues on a predictable schedule and need help outside of Office Hours. On those rare occasions, I'm usually only away for a short time while directing my engineers what to do. On the very rare occasions that I know I'm running a little late or won't be able to make it, I ALWAYS post to the campaign forum so everyone is aware. CHARACTER CONCEPTS : (I'm flexible on party roles, I can adapt backstories and character design to fit a particular need) Gellius Jeggare Level 1 CG Sylph Wizard of the Void Elementalist School ( Using Primal Magic alternate rules for that tasty randomness ) Born of Chelaxian parents, he and his younger sister grew up in quiet study, sequestered away from 'normal' society. How they came to be just ...wasn't talked about in their household. They seemed to exist only to remind their traditionalist Father of the family's tainted lineage. Out of shear boredom and annoyance with his sister, he dared her to climb over the estate wall into the city-proper. However she ran afoul of some rather bad people who abducted her to fetch a few gold at the slave markets for such an educated and exotic girl. Blaming himself, he's been traveling to major cities Listening to the Wind with his little plump Thrush familiar, hoping to hear rumors of her whereabouts. Several years later, he's most recently come to Korvosa. Still something of a young and naive idealist at the age of 17, he has rather strong feelings about slavery and free will; trying to make it right for anyone in similar straits. EVERYone should be a free as the wind to do what they will... Character Combat Concept: Utility and 'make life suck' for opponents. Not much of a blaster, but there will be a little mixed in as needed. Depending on the campaign; he might pick up some light crafting. Depending how Primal Magic optional rules pan out, he might inadvertently do more harm than good in a fight if he looses control of his magic.(Occasionally his childhood stuttering problem sneaks back in at inopportune times....) Perry Wardroxan LINK (I should note that the 'build' doesn't sound terribly unique, but his personality, mannerisms, and solid backstory make the character) Level 1 NG Half-Elf Spirit Ranger Half-elf, bastard of Perishial Spirit Ranger , aspiring but failing to join the Sable Company Half-elf, bastard of Perishial and Chelaxian traditionalist mother. Raised primary by magical servants and foisted off to tutors by his emotionally distant mother. His 'father', wouldn't claim him, but did help support his entry into the Ranger Corps when he came of age. A Spirit Ranger , aspiring but failing to join the Sable Company due to his lack of connection to the beasts. More in touch with the Spirits of the world, his is a mediocre existence where he strives to find his place and do what good he can protect the citizens of Korvosa. Drug Addict Trait: Mother died of overdose in his late teens, Perishial wouldn't claim him directly but helped him apply to the Rangers to keep Perry off the streets Character Combat Concept: Spending more time in city streets than surrounding forests, he prefers formation fighting with polearms from behind the front line. He'll pull out a Bow when necessary. The Ranger Corps uniform consists of Light/Medium armor in order to take a hit as needed.

I role-play my application into the party . I avoid applying to games I don't really like. I check out what the party has in advance if I can, and try to fill in what they need; I'm used to being the heal/skill-slave. I have yet to be rejected from a group. My Tuesday through Saturday nights are booked, in addition to my Saturday mornings. I also type in complete sentences, with proper spelling and occasionally correct grammar. I make sure to leave plenty of space between my lines. It doesn't hurt to have two X chromosomes.
It's worth noting that you should be putting your eggs mostly in the forum basket. Applying to games in looking for group might get you a few bites, but those tend to get dozens of applications, sometimes over 10 for each spot.

Stuff varies a lot from GM to GM, but I know when I run stuff (which is rare but y'know) friendliness/politeness and clarity in your writing are HUGE. Also: DKitten said: I also type in complete sentences, with proper spelling and occasionally correct grammar. I make sure to leave plenty of space between my lines. 'cos I'm sure it does, like, generally, but idk if it makes a difference with elfgames?

Okay, I sort of feel like this has run its course and it's a little bit off-topic for this forum, so closing this as per the Intended Use section of the CoC . I hope this has been helpful, larry!
