Session 1 Log and XP

Here's my log for session one. If you remember other things that happened, please add to the thread so we don't miss anything: Title: "Oppression is born of fear" FY 62 Day 1 It's the first day of FY62. Eusyl, Joseph, Kyle, Rodworth, and Yaz (in alphabetical order) find themselves discussing the future. All are recently graduated, none are employed, and money is soon going to become a problem. Rodworth points out the missing girl listed in the want ads and the large reward (10,000 Styrigi) is mentioned. He calls the number attached and reaches the Draubor Detective Agency. The Dralasite receptionist sends a picture and name of Lisa Sturgeon. The receptionist also explains that she was last seen in the Capitol Dome and "the person in charge of her" is offering a significant sum of money for return. There is mentioned evidence of foul play, but there has been no ransom note. Supposed motive is either future ransom or blackmail, since the girl has "political" strings. There is some further discussion of other want ad topics such as rewards for missing pets. A few more calls are placed for more information, but no good leads. The group splits up. Joseph heads to try his contacts with the Valkyrie, expecting that since a girl is involved they might be willing to help. Eusyl and Kyle go to the university to see what they can learn from the research computers. Rodworth and Yaz decide to ask Scooney to see if he knows anything. On the way out, planning to take the monorail, Joseph sees that it is broken down and a crowd is waiting. Eusyl and Kyle follow in the same path, but seeing the situation decide to walk to the main lift since it isn't that far. On the way, they notice a dead dog in an alley near the street. Looking closer, they notice that the dog is quivering even though it appears to be dead. Carefully investigating, they discover that it is being burrowed into (and eaten) by an unknown bat-like animal. Eusyl grabs some nearby trash and captures it, with plans to take it to the university and analyze it. In the meantime, Rodworth and Yaz find Scooney's Saloon subdued since there are four suspicious looking men in long coats. Regardless, they order a meal and talk quietly with Scooney. Scooney tells them that the local bosses were also interested in the want ad, because they thought someone might be operating on their turf. But they quickly learned that it was probably political, since the girl's real name is Lisa Styrigi and don't want that kind of trouble. Rod also finds a strange symbol with text inscribed into the table while eating, takes a picture with his chronocom, and sends it to the rest of the group. Yaz also inquires about upcoming race events, and is told that Feekur would have better information. (where did Rod and Yaz go next? am I forgetting something?) Civil workers come and fix the monorail, and Joseph arrives at the Valkyries' HQ. Speaking to a Lieutenant, he is bumped up the chain to Artemis herself who offers to "be there" to help. However, since right now he primarily needs information, she relays the request to some of her own contacts and says that she'll tell him if she learns anything. Note that the call regarding the correct name arrives at about this time, so he passes that along as well. Euysl and Kyle arrive at the university, and first investigate their bat. Using the university labs, he learns that it is actually an insect, has lots of nasty germs, has recently laid a bunch of eggs, and has been genetically modified for just this purpose. The two quickly decide to head back toward the dog they saw (and pass along this message), but stop long enough to run their query about Lisa Styrigi. She is not mentioned anywhere within the Styrigi family tree, but they do find a picture of her in the background of a news article, with the foreground being Alice Andra Styrigi, one of the children of Alex Styrigi (the planetary dictator). Also, the strange message on the table turns out the be ancient human that says "Minotaur in Labyrinth at Midnight" Joseph arrives first at the dog, and finds a militia spacer investigating the scene. The dog is quivering again. Rod and Yaz arrive shortly thereafter and there is discussion about what to do. Fire is mentioned several times. The spacer is asked to call the authorities since there is suspicion that the Sathar are involved, and he dials someone on his chronocom. Eusyl and Kyle arrive and there is further discussion regarding what to do. Some more of the spacer's crewmen show up, but they aren't too keen on doing anything. Kyle uses a container that he took from the university to grab the whole body and seal it. Two bats show themselves, but can't get out of the box. The whole thing is delivered to a local police station near the lift. The guards there call it in, and the group overhears that other specimens have been found elsewhere too. Despite good arguments to the contrary, no reward is forthcoming. Returning to Scooney's the group talks shortly with Tronager, then goes inside to have dinner. After that, they split up, Eusyl and Yaz go to Feekur's racing bar. Kyle goes upstairs to rest. The rest go to Quagmire's after learning of a need for more bouncers. Eusyl and Yaz talk to Feekur and learn that the hot new thing is submarine racing in Grand Isle (dome). Yaz instead signs up to drive for a hoverbike race tomorrow (outside the dome), specifics to be delivered. Yaz is going to bet on himself. Eusyl is planning to bet against him to play the odds. Kyle actually heads toward the bar named "the Labyrinth" hoping to learn more about the mysterious message seen earlier, however he only gets halfway there before heading back when chronocoms report new trouble. Quagmire's is blocked by a crowd looking at a crashed groundtruck with MercCo markings. The robot driver apparently crashed and walked away afterwards. Everyone shows up to investigate. Rod notices that the Stainless Steel Storage facility nearby is missing the usual guard and suspects that this is a diversion for a robbery. Yaz and Rod look at the damage, and try to unlock the back doors. Eusyl thereafter succeeds to find that the truck is carrying a set of six combat robots that are currently on and aware, but not active. Yaz and Eusyl then examine the locked door to the storage and discover that the lock is pushed closed but is not actually locked. Rod talks to Quagmire and is hired as a bouncer for the night (for 40 Styrigi). He is instructed to let people in for free until it gets full, then start a door charge to be collected at the end of the night. Joseph tries for the same gig, but doesn't meet the same approval. Unable to prove himself by trying to lift a strangely heavy table, he offers his medical advice. Quagmire smells him really good, then asks him some pointed questions about his feelings about the law. Satisfied with the answers, he begins to take him to the Vortex (the back room).
XP: Everyone showed up on time (1 XP). No goals / plots were completed. I forgot to designate someone to do the journal, so I'll give out the 1 XP for that as well. I won't do that in the future, so somebody remind me next time. We also didn't designate someone for this week's creativity reward, but if someone volunteers (first) they can do that to be awarded at the beginning of next session. That would mean 2 total, except you also get 1 XP for each character background completed. That means 7 total, with the assumption that Pete will finish up his background for Kyle before next week. Good so far, but I'm still curious about appearance and morality. This means your total XP will be 37... possibly 38 by next session if someone takes up the creativity task.

One more item of business: During the session we had some trouble with the chat. Joseph (Ender) suggested that we use Google Hangouts next week and said that he's had better experiences with that. I haven't tried it myself, but I've also heard good things. Thoughts? Would that work for everybody? Want to give it a try? Another option is Skype if there is some advantage that way.
Skype or hangouts is fine by me, They tend to be more reliable then the roll 20 chat, with hangouts there's even an in-hangout app for roll 20 that shows the maps on the hangout page.
How would it work for die rolls and text? I'm going to work around my home issues and shouldn't have to go silent after 10:15 like I did. But I'd still like to have it as an option. For creative stuff, I produce a webcomic so I could produce a team sketch. Small point, I was the one who unlocked the locks (entirely luck) and was doing the exploring of the warehouse. I'm not gonna bet against Yaz, that was a joke. Unless there's some serious odds... Note on XP: I've added a level to Beam Weapons. I still have 3 open XP.

I think the alternate chat programs mostly run in the background, and you funnel the sound through them (instead of Roll20), because they are more reliable. As I said, I haven't done it, so Ender could probably explain better. We didn't have any major trouble last night, but I have seen some weird problems with Roll20 audio in the past. All right, Alexander will then be in charge of player creativity before next week's session. Team sketch sounds nifty. BTW, what's your webcomic? I'd like to check it out. Also, as a shameless plug for stuff that is cool... anything that looks StarFrontiers-ish could also be submitted as content to the StarFrontiersman or FrontierExplorer fan magazines (if you want). Fixed the reference for who unlocked the truck. I remembered that two people tried, and then the third succeeded.
www.thunderkind.com It's a Norse myth based story. I'll need a rough description of Kyle (Aiiens are easier to draw). I'm already familiar with Rodworth from the previous campaign and his picture.
speaking of shameless plugs. already submitted several stories and an article on atomic rocket Frontier explorer.
meant to say,, speaking of shameless plugs. already submitted several stories and an article on atomic rocket to the Frontier Explorer
This is one good group to have around. Thanks Scott for the summary. I will want to know the odds on the race too. Also find out if there are any racers I know would be challenging to gauge my chances of success. The purpose here is to make some credits, not necessarily to be a hero and win races.
Here's the sketch. Being a spacer, I assumed Kyle would have as little hair as possible. Messes with the air filters...
Exceptional! I showed it to my wife and children and they were both very impressed as well. I especially like the relative height differences between the humans and Yazirians. This definitely counts for the creativity award for this week. And Kyle can always grow some hair later if he wants it. =D
I'm glad they liked it. See you Thursday.

To answer Carlos's question. The race scheduled for the next day has no named racers. It's a relatively small race, no big money or advertising - which is why they are willing to pick up a mostly unknown driver (yourself). There will be eight hoverbikes. The course will be over an active lava flow, so there is some danger involved. However, as long as your bike doesn't end upside down in the lava, there's a good margin of safety. The betting usually happens at the race itself after the racers (and bikes) have been inspected. Most of the betting goes through several bookies who will be on hand with varying reputations (and fees). However there will also be private bets, especially between the teams. In gameplay, if you decide to race, the five players will each control one of the hoverbikes. I will control the other three. That way everybody gets to play in the race. In addition, the winner will get a character (monetary) reward of some sort. Since you are actually at some risk, your reward would be greater than if one of the other players win, but I want to foster good gameplay and a competitive spirit. I've also noticed that the vehicle rules in Alpha Dawn are way too simplistic. As written, once you are past your turn speed, there is no reason not to max out (except to lower damage in a crash). Also, the top speeds are laughable. Cars max out at about 65 mph? Unless there are objections, I may apply some more house rules. Still thinking it through... perhaps double the acceleration, deceleration, and top speeds. Also, for short corners, a -10% RS modifier for each 10 meters/turn over your turn speed. Furthermore, if you double (or triple) the turn speed for the vehicle, then the "corner" length is likewise doubled or tripled.
House rules added for the purpose of racing. See the AlphaDawn thread. Any additional suggestions, please post here.
So i'm not going to be able to make it tommorrow, or if i do itll be for the last half hour (staying late at work is fun...yey...) so Joseph will stay in the back, cooking meth or something.
Understood and thanks for the warning. Quagmire's invitation to see the back room can be handled the next session.
Okay, I decided against a limerick or a poem, instead I will let you all have a glimpse at a page of Rodworth's Journal as my creative contribution. Entry : Escape from the Red Queen of the Amazons She will always be Red to me! As I watched her rise naked from bed, making her way to the refresher, I couldn't help but to ache at the sight of her tight sexy rear. She turned her head and smiled as she caught me watching her and began to walk with a swagger that she know would inflame my passion. For a moment I almost decide to forgo what I was going to do. If she was a woman of the clan, a hundred young bravos would compete for her heart. The deeds that would be performed and the bride gifts laid at her feet would inspire tales that would be told among Clan's ships for generations. It would hurt not having her by my side. But as she close the door of the refresher unit, I found my resolve. Quickly I got out of her bed and began donning my skein suit. As I got dress I began looking over my options for escape. I could just walk out the bed room door right now, pass the score of Valkyries lounging in the room in this abandon tenement that they have made their club house. That wouldn't be an options after I did what I had to do. No way could I fight my way through them. So that left the window. Doable, we were only one story up, all I had to do was land right and make my getaway. As I finished putting on my boot, Red emerge from the refresher. She looked perplex seeing me fully dress, generally this would be the start of a night of wild love making that would leave us both bruised and exhausted. “Where you going lover?”, she asked with a voice that would be the envy of Space opera singer. “Red, I have to tell you something. I know you not going to please with what I about to tell you, but baby I am breaking up with you!”, I choked as the word came from my throat, my heart was breaking as I watched her. “Why? What the problem?”, she asked as moisture began misty over her eyes. “Baby, it just not going to work, you like hurting people.” I uttered and she shook her head in disbelief. “I don't understand, you hurt people all the time Rod. Heck didn't you just leave those young rich brats from the capital dome unconscious in the back alley of Feekur's Racing Bar after they assaulted Jenny.” She spat out her accusation of my double standard. “The different is my love is that I do not enjoy it. Violent among the clans is a tool. We take no pleasure in it, we have a finely tune sense of the surrender reflex. When we have to kill it with a heavy heart my love, but you and your Valkyries have lost your way. True at one time you all were victims, but your revenge has morphed into some sick sadistic lust that you never can be filled. I was so amour with you, that it took me all this time to realize what was wrong, but if I stay any longer what I feel for you will just turn sour. I am sorry.” I watched as her face turned as red as her hair and as she lunged for the auto pistol in her dresser. She screamed, “I'll kill you, you sanctimonious bastard.” I was already crashing through the window. She fired off a volley which zipped above my head as I was falling toward the pavement. I dropped and rolled when I hit the ground and caught off guard the one Valkyrie standing watch over their hover bikes. Springing to my feet, I leveled my gyro pistol at her and she dived into the tenement hallway as I squeezed off a few shots. I limped over to Red's hover bike and took off, but not before I pulled out my pocket the ball of T19 that I prepared earlier. I hit the the on switch of the timer and tossed it into the assemble of Valkyrie hover bikes. I almost did not make it out of the blast radius as I felt the warmth of the explosion at my back. The sounds of the secondary explosions, eased my worries of pursue. So I made my way to Scooney's. The dinner crowd was already leaving, and I had to wrestle my way on to the lift to get to my apartment. The lift had barely began to ascend when I heard the sound of Red's Hover bike taking off. Apparently some resourceful fool had discover that I had left the keys in the bike, I felt a sliver of regret over the thief's fate when the Valkyries track down the homer beacon on the bike, but it passed. No one was home as I enter the apartment. So I settle down at the apartment's terminal to scan the daily want ads. Before today, I did not really think about the future or to say I did not think of one without Red. As I scanned the ads and one sprang out: “Have you seen this little girl? 10,000 Styrigi reward” Maybe this was my way off this rock ?....
