Firebase Problems

August 09 (13 years ago)
Firebase caused us no end of trouble when trying to run our game tonight on roll20.

Firebase servers were down when we wanted to start, for almost two hours, necessitating we delay the game start. Once Firebase was back up, it kept dropping messages; players would stop receiving chats and minis went out of sync.

This isn't technically a Roll20 bug, but relying on unreliable services does make me >:(

Firebug said:
"The connection to ws://gamma.firebase.com/roll20.ws was interrupted while the page was loading."

And lots of: "uncaught exception: A server-side error has occurred: Error handling wire protocol message."

@Aleena Sorry for your frustrations! As far as I know, Firebase was down tonight, but only for about 15 minutes. However, the not moving minis thing is new to me. Was there any pattern to it? Or did it just start happening randomly?

Also, thanks for sharing both of those error messages.

Edit: Also just wanted to throw out that we're working with them to get things more stable. We've grown pretty quickly and it's really putting quite a lot of strain on the servers to keep 500 players connected simultaneously at peak times (like this evening). So we absolutely know that this level of connectivity failure is unacceptable, please just bear with us while we get it fixed as quickly as we can. Thanks!

Thank you for your speedy reply!

It seemed to me that map sync issues was related to firebase failing to propagate updates to everyone. If map data is not exchanged over the same mechanism, then that is indeed a strange problem. In any event, reloading caught up to the latest changes made by users and myself.

Thank you again!
