FROM THE DESK OF THE DM Things got off to a good start, battle-wise for the party, they have been able to inflict some damage upon this evil entity and seem to be well on their way to helping the poor town of Hommlet get rid of this nasty problem....or so it would seem. As we have seen from this session, I would encourage the players to have hope, that anything is possible, but at the same time to not become over confident, as this thing has demonstrated it's versatility in being somewhat like a swiss army knife, having quite a full repertoire of skill sets, most of which may not have even been used yet. After all, having said that, how long can a stint of bad DM rolls or successful party critical attacks last? Watch out! Next session, the tables may turn and then we're all in deep doo-doo. My only advice would be to keep doing what you're doing, go like gang-busters and not give it a chance to breathe, because I'm quite positive, that if given the chance, and allowed to have some "breathing room", that the full power and capabilities of the encounter might then be manifested! I have a sneaking suspicion that this intended "one-up" might stretch into a "more than one up", so be prepared for the long haul in this battle as it might shake the adventurers to their very core! QUICK READ RECAP The party boldly enters the mold filled, abandoned temple, now home to the evil demoness of fungi, Zuggtmoy who, appearing first as an old crone seated upon a jewel encrusted throne, vanishes in an orb of colored rays, leaving behind a pile of dust. Upon closer investigation, Karmadel senses magic on the throne and behind the purple tapestry, confirmed by Serandon in searching for secret doors around the throne dias, and Argo's cat sent into the alleged secret area. Obviously found out, the old hag transforms into a gigantic, disgusting, bulbous toadstool shape with elephantine pod-like legs, appearing in a fit or rage from behind the tapestry, initiating combat, casting a flurry of spells. The group realizes that weapons of less than +2 are in-effective, and so they cast a series of defensive and offensive spells. The session is continued to next week as the battle ensues ! Bjorn and Karmadel present their ring of continual light, illuminating a portion of the dark temple. Argo pulls out pouch of powdered iron, stay close, or you'll break the protection. Serandon recommends himself back, Argo in front, and a fighter in front of him. Kell surmises the entry door might close behind them. Leaxle attempts to hide in shadows and fails. Karmadel sees a shadowy figure seated on a gem encrusted throne atop a translucent dias engulfed in darkness. Argo pours powdered iron in a 20' diameter circle for protection and explains that do not engage in melee if inside the circle as it would lose that protection. A magical darkness surrounds the dias and throne. An old crone is seated upon the throne. Balfon addresses the old crone "Can you hear me?" "Take a valuable column, and leave" she replies. "We took a vote, and you have to go!" Karmadel swords says "Do you really know what you're getting us into?" "Is this thing magical? If it is, we should probably get out of here!" "You're a talking sword! You're magical too!" replies Karmadel Karmadel does not disbelieve an illusion. Suddenly, the Crone disappears in a burst of color sphere, leaving behind a pile of ashes. "You'll never take my treasure!" Bjorn uses halberd to reach out toward dias/throne area to see if there might be a force field, but there is none. Karmadel senses an overwhelming evil presence on the throne and 17' or so behind the throne....behind the purple floor to ceiling tapestry. Argo finishes protection from evil 10' radius spell at bottom of stairs, before the three columns. Tralaan gets on all fours and runs his hands through the pile of ash at the base of the dias left by the crone and the magical light emitting orb display, finding it to be a fine ash powder. There is no smoke odor in the ash. Balfon surmises it is a slight of hand trick and not a true spell. Balfon toss his tent upon the dias and nothing happens. Serandon surmises the crone leaving may be a show. Argo's cat does not sense anything new. Serandon searches for secret doors around dias and finds one. Karmadel uses sword x-ray vision to read the northern area near wall and dias identified by Serandon and it says "this place isn't made very well, leaving gaping areas like that behind the tapestry". Argo instructs his cat to go behind the tapestry. The cat familiar transmits '....old woman....' and '...now large beast...' Large mushroom monster appears from behind tapestry and combat begins. Zuggtmoy attempts to cast silence 15' radius on Karmadel but fails due to a successful saving throw. Karadel says "Styx" to activate his helm . Kyra casts prayer, affecting entity with a -1 penalty. Shenjo breaks invisibility by making a critical attack for 28 hp of damage. Balfon makes a successful hit but for some reason does no damage. Karmadel tosses a holy hand grenade for 15 hp . Tralann tosses and over throws a holy hand grenade. Kyra throws a holy hand grenade for 21 hp of damage. Argo casts stinking cloud (result of chromatic orb spell) for 10 hp of damage. Shenjo hits for 32 hp of damage. Balfon goes to Kyra and asks for bless on his axe as it's magical strength is not strong enough to hit. Bjorn swings with his +1 halberd but is unable to make contact with the entity. Karmadel strikes it's head for 20 hp of damage. Kell hits for 14 hp of damage. Leaxle attacks with his +1 longsword and makes a critical hit but mysteriously does no damage. Our power blinked out and was out until after midnight. Sorry I missed the fight. Looking forward to next week.
Your fine charles was wondering what happned to you Good to hear your ok.
yea, same man, glad it was just the power. fights still in progress tho, you can get some whacks in next week, we saved some for ya :)
Serandon is looking forward to it.
i think i'm pissing it off. lol
im pretty sure what we are handing it is NOT what it expected, i hope our luck holds, tho. knowing gygax, this is NOT going to be easy or end well if it doesnt.....
I hope you guys took precautions against the spores in the air cuz you all know what happens to those with out proper respirators around molds don't ya lol
@Thomas H. -- I suppose we would have been wiser to flood the place with fire to burn it clean before trying to upset the 'thing' we are now encountering. I keep expecting a 'good DM roll' soon which will be part of a spore attack... with the hope our clerics can heal us all from any fungii based nastiness once this is all over. (( although JUST staying alive is looking to be the major goal due to the magical limitations of the party re: weapons ! ))
As a reminder i won't be here tonight. Paul Can control Shenjo If he wishes, or Chris. Chris and Mike have my Number text or call me if you have any questions. See you guys next Saturday.
we got you covered, be safe
sorry folks I can't make it. last minute call from sister. I have go sit with my mom tonight. Serandon shall return next game time
As noted, we didn't have a 'full crew' for the 20th so we just shot the breeze for a bit. Hopefully, the 27th will be 'game on'. (make certain to post over at "... the 600 mile trip..." if you had shopping to do before entering the temple). Also be award, the week AFTER the 27th will be the 4th of July so that will be a 'no play' weekend probably. heh... what started out as a 'quickee' temple run is turning into more of an adventure than we expected!
FYI guys I'm going to make a back up of our Party loot(so we have a copy not stored on roll20. Also i'll be their the 27th. so lets all run in fear and have fun.
I keep trying to think of what goes with 'rooms. (kind of like melted butter being the antithesis against rampaging lobsters...)
Garlic butter and shrooms.
Depends on the shroom your talking about if your talking shiitake then I've heard steak goes well with it, if your looking for a main course option, so you'd need to bring a cow with you lol. However if your talking magic mushrooms then you'd better bring lots of snacks type food like gorp or something to that effect. When your high you tend to get the munchies or so I've been told. :-)
the war cow shall live on
heh.. wouldn't THAT be something -- we get our hats handed to us and the war cow charges in and takes out the mushroom. :p
What bugs me is i have a feeling that i know what we're doing next but i can't place my finger on it. i just have that feeling.
You mean besides getting eaten by the great and powerful demoness of fun guy I don't know what happens to you when your body becomes part of a fungi demon... Good luck guys try not to die lol...
Hommlet reminds me of a module, but i am drawing a blank.
