Solution to fix long loading games!

August 16 (12 years ago)
Salutations fellow members of the community!
I have found out what is causing the massive load times on our extended campaigns!

Problem-
It turns out that the game is trying to load the chat logs as its starting up, so if you have a campaign where players talk a lot via chatbar instead of voicechat the campaign will take a long time to load every single thing that is said.

Solution-
There is a way to refresh the chatlog so that it is clean and fast again, GMs goto "My Campaigns" then check your campaign's detail screen, on the left you should see "Copy/Extend Campaign" click it, then when it asks what you want to carry over uncheck the "Chat Log" option, then remove your old campaign and rename your new one to take it's place.

For Suggestions-
Sorry Devs if this is the wrong place to post this.
I would suggest making an ingame tool that allows GMs to choose when old chatlogs are deleted so that they do not pile up and stop our campaigns.

Also sorry about not participating in the kickstarter, i was late to join the party it seems ;)

@James No problem on not being in the Kickstarter. What you've described will work, indeed. However, we have an automated process that goes through every 24 hours and moves everything but the last 100 entries from your chat log in the "live" copy of your game into the chat archives, for this very reason. Is yours not doing that?

It seems that is it not working, or it could possibly be that the chat archives are what is slowing down the loading times, though take note i have no idea how your archives system works, so dont take my word for it.

To replicate the problem just make a campaign that people can log onto and chat about Roll20, by doing so i think it would be a great why to figure out how to solve this 'bug'. I guess you could call it that.

Also do you have a donation page i could use?

Yeah, we'll definitely follow up on this, because we don't want you to have to keep creating a new campaign every time people get chatty :-)

And we don't have a donation page at the current moment (thanks for asking!), but we're going to be rolling out a way for people who want to support the site to do so here soon.

Okay, this should be fixed now. *But*, the "prune" script only runs once every few hours, and only for campaigns that have been updated since it last ran. So the next time you use your campaign at all (even just to move a token), a few hours later it should run and move your old archive messages off of Firebase (making it much quicker for your campaign to load) and into the Chat Archive system. Thanks!
