Token Actions not appearing

July 31 (10 years ago)

Edited July 31 (10 years ago)
When I create a character (Grimdrock the cave troll), and then create Attributes & Abilities for the characters, the Abilities have a checkbox that reads "Show as token action." According to the wiki ( https://wiki.roll20.net/Token_Actions ) this should call up a list of the Ability macros nearby the arrow on the left toolbar when I click on the token.

However, this doesn't occur.

Here's the initiative macro I was taught:

/emas @{selected|token_name} hefts his trusty club and grumbles angrily about being disturbed...
/ooc (Initiative: [[1d20 + @{selected|DEX} &{tracker}]].)

What am I doing wrong? How can I get the monster's Abilities to display as token actions?

Is the token linked to the macro sheet?
Pat, you nailed it in one. That is exactly what I had forgotten to do. Thanks!

Just make sure you have the token fully setup before you make it the default token for that sheet otherwise you will constantly be resetting it.
By the way, is there proper etiquette on these forums about asking questions? Is starting a new topic for each question considered acceptable?

I'm in the middle of trying to figure Roll20 out, and I find that the tutorials raise more questions than they answer for me!

I have no idea what a default token is or how to even set a default token up yet!

If they are specific questions then individual threads are fine but if it is just about learning a group of things, an all in one post works also. We are here to help..
I googled the wiki for "default token" and didn't get an applicable results.

Read this wiki page: https://wiki.roll20.net/Linking_Tokens_to_Journals

It was written by one of mods and it explains much about setting up your tokens before making them the default token for that journal (that means if you drag the journal onto the map area, it will drop a specific token on it).

Yes, I have been following that.

  1. Set up Journal entry with HP and other vital stats (Such as Hit Points, Armor Class, Movement, etc.)
  2. Create token to represent creature (Find one that looks like what you want, and place it on the board.)
  3. In the token's tools, link token to journal entry (Represents Character dropdown menu)
  4. Link token's bars to journal's Attributes (Bar 1,2,3 dropdown menu) (By general consensus, Bar 1 usually represents Hit Points. 2 and 3 often indicate Armor Class and Movement.)
  5. If "Mook", UNLINK token's Bar 1,2,3 dropdown from stats (numbers will stay but will no longer be linked)
  6. Make 100% sure token is set up the way you want it (Character bars are linked; Mook bars are NOT linked)
  7. Open Journal entry for that Token
  8. Select Token on map (token must be highlighted)
  9. In Journal Entry, click Use Selected Token
  10. Save your work
I can't find Use Selected Token anywhere in the Journal Entry.

Also, there has to be a way I can use all the Ability macros I created with Glimdrock the Cave Troll and transport those over into Snarf the Goblin, right?

I mean, I haven't found a way to do that yet and it's frustrating, but it's got to be there right?

It can't be that I need to manually replicate the Ability macros for each and every new monster token?

Ok. When you open your journal, you will see at the top right corner two blue buttons, a show all players and an edit button. Click on the edit button and it will open the journal in the editor mode (see picture above). Select your token that you have fully set up and then click on the default token button on the sheet then save it after it loads.
Here are screen captures showing what I mean when I say I don't see Use Selected Token anywhere in the Journal Entry.

The way these forums mess up bbcode is driving me nuts!

Let's try this...

There we go! Finally! So I had to use the button, I guess.

Yes, I've already done that. Sorry for the confusion.

I thought you were addressing a way to quickly produce tokens (of different monsters) with macro Abilities without having to manually enter those macro Abilities in every monster.

Say I want to have a Cave Troll, a couple Goblins, and a Wyvern, right?

I have already set up my Cave Troll with macros. What I want to know is if there's a way to take those macros and transfer them to the Goblin token (which I can Duplicate) and the Wyvern token? I mean, a quick way that doesn't require me to input them again manually.

Does that make sense?

And how the heck do you display images on these forums? I am accustomed to using IMG tags and they won't display.

Ah, finally got it! Had to click the "Insert Image" button.

Ahh, ok. Generally it is one sheet per token (if you want default token) but there are a few methods to play with.

One way is just to duplicate the sheet and edit some of the info to represent the new token. That is the mostly used way.
Another way is to make a rollable table with various tokens so you can change your tokens as you need and link it to your journal. I've never done that so I don't know how hard that is.

I know I can duplicate the monster as an option while editing. But that only duplicates a token linked to the same monster entry in my Journal.

What I want to do is duplicate the actual Journal entry, using it as a template for other different monsters.

That way I copy over all my macros.

How do I do that?

That I'm not sure of (I don't use full sheets or tokens much in my games) but someone will answer your question. Sorry that I can't be of further help on that.

I might be able to help if I understood what you meant here.

Are you wanting to set up a MASTER monster sheet with macros already set, with no tokens in it, no portrait. a blank character sheet that will just be used for monsters?

If the answer is yes, then here is what you do:

Part One
  • Use one of your existing monster sheets as a template and skip to the Part Two OR
  • Create a new character sheet -( I named mine Monster Sheet )
  • Copy/Paste/Create any macros into this 'monster sheet' that you think you will want to have some monster use in the future.
  • Save it.
Part Two
From then on, when you want to create a new monster, open this 'monster sheet' and:
  • select "EDIT"
  • scroll down and hit "Duplicate" <---this will cause a sheet named the same but with "Copy" on the front to appear at the bottom of the journal window stack.
  • close your original 'monster sheet'
  • open your Copy of 'monster sheet'
  • add in the token you have prepared as the default token.
  • it will have access to any and all macros that you check off as token action
If the answer was no, then I don't know what to tell you till I hear back!
You can also do this for a Master Character Sheet.
@OldSchoolChris

That is exactly what I was trying to figure out, yes!

Strangely, I think when I was hitting Duplicate before it was duplicating the Token and not the Sheet.

I removed the default token from the sheet, then tried again and PRESTO! It worked just like you described. Strange. But thanks for helping my troubleshoot it!
