Merging Token Art and Portraits

I just downloaded some beautiful token frame art by Gabriel Pickard (Game Glam: Portrait Frames).  I am trying to merge them with other portrait art and i am unsuccessful.  I am using the 420x420 pix suggested by the author as the image size.  I guess i am having trouble with the layers.  Is there a good tutorial on how this is done?  Thanks for any input.

You would need to do this in an external editor like The GIMP. Is that what you're using?
I am using Paint 2 from the Apple App store.  it has layer tools, but not sure what i am doing. so far this is the best i could do :(

I'm not specifically familiar with that program but in most programs with layers you should be able to place the frame in front of the image by moving that layer higher than it in the layer stack, or by adding your image below the frame layer to begin with.  I failed to find any tutrials for paint 2 so I'm afriad I can't give more specific advice than that.

I was actually trying to do something similar just yesterday using GIMP and gave up in the end.  What I was trying to achieve was something that looked a bit like this with the subject sort of involved with the token ring (e.g. one foot in and one out in this image. I know how to do the 'Colour to Alpha' thing that removes the background edges, but couldn't work out how to get the image to interact with the token.
This is just simple layer manipulation if you use GIMP/Photoshop. For your case Didz, you can 1. Make copies of the token circle one behind and one in front of the alpha layer's image stock (+background). 2. Mask off the exterior of the token border + any extruding portion such as the dwarfs foot. 3. Erase the from the token border in front of the image stock parts you want in the foreground (ie the hammer+foot). 4. Leave alone parts of the token border in front of the stock for those you want obscured (the left foot)
Wow cool tricks - thanks guys! I did figure out my original problem, though. I was working with the token, in .png format, but the portrait was not.
