TWITCH STREAM We're back online in glorious High Definition video! Our twitch stream system has been restored and functioning beautifully. Good thing too, these maps are wonderfully made by an outside source and shouldn't be missed during our presentation of this classic GenCon Tournament adventure module! Be sure to participate with the group each week LIVE! at www.twitch.tv/dm4hire every Saturday night at 6 PM until midnight. View this entire session here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chgbk1yTrBY http://www.twitch.tv/dm4hire/v/13481600 Twitch.tv keeps each broadcast for one week only, so be sure to stay up-to-date while it is still available, and be sure to click the heart icon under the twitch screen to 'follow' the group and be alerted of each new session. QUICK READ RECAP The adventurers recapture hit points and spells by utilizing Leomund's Tiny Hut and the clerical stone shape in an upstairs unused storage area to make their hidden rest area secret and not be able to be found by the wandering monsters in the slavers temple hide-out, pushing further into the complex up a northern hallway surprising a skittish group of orcs hidding in a room covered in holy symbols, the orcs flee, under the assumption that 'it's coming to get us', unaware of Shenjo's invisible presence being responsible for knocking down the already flimsy door, only to venture into an adjoining cemetery where vegetation entangles Kell rendering him helpless, all the while trees attack sending Shenjo unconscious, and a last ditch fireball attempt to destroy all of the encroaching trees sends Argo and his familiar cat to their doom! DM SESSION LOG 150829 - The Death of Argo Spells points (used / total) Tralaan: 1st -- Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Burning Hands, Color Spray 2nd -- Web, Melf's Acid Arrow 3rd -- Fireball Max. 3rd Level Max: 70 (5th Level Max is still 3rd, 4 per day). Karmadel casts stone shape to make the big room appear to be a closet at the door. Argo casts Leomunds Tiny hut. Party sleeps for 8 hours and regains hit points and spells. Aaron uses his sledgehammer and on the second try, smashes an opening in the stone wall for the party to leave their hiding place. Shenjo uses his ring of invisibility to go up the northern hall. He hears talking in a northern room and sees daylight and possibly wind blowing grass and dried leaves from under the southern door. Leaxle removes his studded leather, makes his hide in shadows check but fails his move silently to check the stable. Shenjo pounds in the northern door revealing a room full of holy symbols on the walls and 6 frightened orcs nervously handling their halberds. Argo in the room over hears the orcs screaming, something along the lines of "it's coming to get us!". Argo shares this information with the rest of the group. Karmadel says "Oh shit...!" Kyra says "Oh boy, he did it again!" Shenjo casts wall of fog to fill the orc room and the outside hall. Orcs start hollering, the sound of things smashing to the floor are heard. Bjorn enters the fog and readies his halberd. Aaron enters the fog and feels his way to the western end of the hallway. A door is heard opening. The fog in the room begins to dissipate. The orcs are no longer in the room. The party can see outside. Shenjo knocks on southern door (opposite the room full of holy symbols minus the orcs) and it knocks back. Aaron forces himself through the southern door to reveal a cemetery with a dead tree blowing up against the door. He notices a piece of paper attached to the door of a mausoleum inside. He attempts to make sense of the note but says "they don't know how to spell it's all scribble junk" Bjorn goes to the holy symbol room outer door, looks outside, sees and surprises the orcs, and quickly closes the door and latches it. Bjorn declares spear hedging. Balfon enters the room with Bjorn. Karmadel moves into the ramshackle room with holy symbols and his armor protection from evil 10' turns on. Shenjo's dogs are skittish in the cemetery, he calls out to Kyra "come over here please, this place may be haunted." Balfon readies his crossbow of accuracy. Argo reads the note on the mausoleum door and it says 'don't forget the rations, chains and other supplies needed'. He tries the doors and it is unlocked. Random tree falls and misses Leaxle. Leaxle reasons with a gut feeling that it wasn't by accident. Karmadel attempts to detect evil 60' facing the cemetery but does not detect anything and shares the findings with the group. Shenjo shoots melf's acid arrow at a tree near the northern door and hits. The trees suddenly move and block the exit. Balfon shoots arrow at the middle tree for 9 hp of damage. Argo casts chromatic orb as orange for a fire effect for 8 hp of damage, starting the right most and middle tree on fire. Leaxle moves into the far corner and dons his armor. Tralaan casts melf's acid arrow at the third tree not on presently burning for 5 hp of damage. Kell attempts to attack a tree, moving to the grassy area, but fails a save vs. paralyzation and is immediately entwined in a cocoon of vegetation. All three trees attack Shenjo for 23 hp of damage knocking him unconscious. New Round Argo pours cure light wound potion down Shenjo's gullet. Balfon changes weapons to his battle ax. Potion kicks in for Shenjo giving him 2 hp of health, bringing him back to consciousness. Bjorn hears no activity coming from outside the door. Bjorn hits the middle tree blocking the door and separating the other party members for 14 hp of damage. All the trees move to block the exit. Leaxle is trapped in the corner. Karmadel's protection from evil 10' radius turns off. Karmadel casts bless to help the party with bonuses. Tralaan casts magic missile on the west tree for 11 hp of damage. Aaron hits path blocking tree for 11 hp of damage. Kell surmises that safety might be had in the mausoleum. New Round Shenjo activates his armors blur ability. Shenjo casts 3 mirror image on self. New Round Karmadel tries fear to see if the trees might be intelligent, but it fails. Argo casts fireball and kills himself and his cat familiar. Balfon lights his cigar from the burning debris. Leaxle hits a burning tree next to him for 13 hp of damage. Kell gave a cure light wounds potion to Shenjo for 5 hp of life. Shenjo regains consciousness for the second time and quickly activates his ring of invisibility! Party lump sum XP with all aspects considered (including but not limited to) session survival, skill usage, role-playing, alignment checks, etc: 3880 Shenjo/Kyra/Dogs (Craig F.) Gray Elf: 388/388 Karmadel, Priest/Bjorn/Balfon (Christopher S.): 388/388/388 Argo Mage/Leaxle/Serandon (Paul W.): 388/388/388 Tralann (Shalvenay K) Elf, Half: 388 Kell/Aaron (Robert D.) Bed rest for you my friend... 1 hp a day in real life I'm afraid. These things take time.
Just a reminder, there will be no D&D the next two coming sessions due to the labor day holiday, but will resume on September 19th at the regularly scheduled time.
That gives me an extra week to get ready.
(1) Get well soonest Charles! (2) Kell gave a cure light wounds potion to Shenjo for 5 hp of life. <<<<<< That action was by Aaron; Kell was still immoblized by vegetation cocooning. (3) A moment of silence for Argo's cat. We had survived so many fireballs and totally forgot about what would happen to a 'fail' and the consequences to Argo's familiar - AND - to Argo himself. All the monsters we've kicked butt and we get hammered by some moving shrubbery. :/
Folks looks like I will be going into a rehab hospital soon. The legs are not getting better and I need physcial therapy as well. I will keep you in the loop but for the time, looks like Serandon will be at your command.
Don't worry man just get better keep us updated
#1- Charles, don't worry. Unlike Argo, Sarandon is safe with me, just focus on your legs and get better man. #2- idk what to put for #2 i just hope Argo falling in such a gloriously stupid way will save the members trapped by the trees. #3- The back up character, if it comes into play, will be one hell of an addition to our front line ability, and should allow our priest to back off the front line and support us all :D

As your DM, I wouldn't be doing my job if i didn't reiterate sound advice from time to time, so here goes. Player cardinal rule #1: never split up the party. Seeing that this is a tournament module designed to 'thin the herd' so to speak, it is highly advised to stick together. Ok, I feel better now. Thanks for listening. :)

Argo should have stayed in the doorway lol
"Split the party" -- who had the axe? This was a case of 'fools rushed in where clerics feared to tread' -- or maybe we just stepped into a deeper pile of 'oh s**t' than we typically do.

Some more solid DM advice. Player Cardinal Rule #2: Don't confront every encounter head on. Use wit and out think intelligent foes. When melee is required, always use ranged weapons and cover when possible. Move often, don't be a stationary target. Retreat when necessary. A good 'survival tactic' rule of thumb is, if you know a group of things might attack you, don't stand in the middle. Don't give every encounter an opportunity to make an attack on you, but instead, stand at the end or nearest the least amount of opponents, or of course use cardinal rule #2.
DM Rule 1. Target player A shoot player A with arrow :p lol

Ok all i really hope that luck will be on my roll when we come back cause i'm going to break 1 out of 6 pearls that gives me a 90% chance to summon my deity to come help save all your bum's....you cheeky monkey's. And may he Diety be with me.....wave my hand these's are the tree's that you are looking for to wipe out :P P.S. Since my diety of Justice, Revenge and i roll good all tree's will be destroy'ed and not sure about if Arggo be rez'ed by my diety at the same time. that part of rezzing would be up to the DM. I would only see that my diety would wipe out the tree's only.
Really a DM's Call.
Don't forget to poison the arrows with lethal poison before shooting player A
Is this considered animal abuse? Just asking.
Why are they always cats? lol Poor kitty cats. Have any of you guys seen the you tube video "never split the party" if you haven't then you should its friggen awesome and it make sense too. Anyway i think that's about it for my two cents worth see you all next week ;)

"the wizard threw his fireball and left the fighters roasting in their mail" ha ha ha ha ha damn that sounds familiar......... matter of fact, it was cheesy but good ill share the link, thx Thomas for the suggestion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waa2ucfgVgQ
Hope everyone has a good labor day and i hope your getting better Charles .
How to get out of this situation if Karmadel's pearls don't deliver some miracle? Aaron has his sword (nothing special) and can hack away but it is one blade and many burning trees. Which leaves no means of dragging bodies back from the fires/trees as it stands now. Shenjo and Kell are toast. (or soon to be crispy critters) Can someone summon a giant termite or woodchuck?
O.o Polymorph them all into itty bitty shrubberies?
1441495522

Edited 1441495698
Or a giant beaver lol, Fear the herrings for they shall be you undoing lol

Edited 1441512759
We are the knight's that go NII, now you must get me a shrubbery if you wish to pass. P.S. If the 1st pearl don't work i got 5 others on the necklace, and boy will Heironeous be really pissed if i did that. But at least i can say i really got his attention. (btw was just joking on using all 6 pearls lol)
And there is another thing you all can do, RUN FOREST, RUN, to the building. Remember it was unlocked and i did say there was no evil in that direction, which is 10' wide and 60' long and went 15' passed the building, so no evil in there. All that can move and with strength grab someone that can't move and carry / drag them in. And if someone has a way of obscurrng vision in anyway shape or form, do so to help make the trees have a more of a chance to miss as they retreat. And hopefully that someone that can cast that in not in with the trees, I will do my best to save you all and that's all i can do, crossing fingers and toes.

Hey Thomas make that a Giant Dire Beaver horde all with strength, enlarge, and prayer, and possible vorpal teeth lol. OMG i just thought about making a Druid that can do all that lol.
A druid that does nothing but summon giant woodland creatures to gnaw, chomp or piss all over the evil enemy? I'd pay to see that. :p

lol me to a druid summoning is the reversal of a necromancer :P, and instead of ugly liquidated meat bags, u have vorpal bunny rabbits ripping out your throat.......RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY.

Took the image I had down for Le'Axel -- he has a pretty cool one now on his bio card. Kick butt bounty hunter elf.
@ Christopher not if you have the holy hand grenade of Antioch carried by brother Maynard!

As Christopher noted, we COULD try to grab everyone and run into the crypt. BUT, we do not know if the crypt is empty or not or if 'evil' is relative when it may be a lich sleeping vs awake. That scan of Karmadel's also hit several trees (before they started moving) and they didn't 'detect' either. AND, we have a few folks who are fairly 'ungrabbable' at the moment -- Leaxle is stuck in the corner and totally surrounded, Kell is aflame and totally immobile due to vines/vegetation and.... ??? is Shenjo up or down (again) ??? if nothing else, bet after the system shock from losing his familiar, he's pretty 'there but not there' at the moment. PLUS, there are more than a few trees (still) between the party and the crypt door... we may run and die due to 'attacks of opportunity' from those shrubberies not yet aflame. Then again, it did fail any 'detect evil' and it had a shopping list for a work party on the door jam??? Maybe it's 'just' the work shed for the cemetery. Maybe. Beats trying to somersault over the burning trees. Or running south and trying to shimmey down an insect hole.
depending on how and when my rolled char is introduced, he may just turn the tables, or kill the whole party lol. ok not so lol, but totally true nonetheless
You better come bursting out of the crypt guns ablazin' !

I really should have a 'back up' character ready 'just in case'. I've thought about a gnome illusionist but am still pretty clueless about the whole OPTION series of how to do magic points, etc. Then again, I saw a cool write up for a gnome necromancer but it was 5e and not even allowed in 2e. Maybe it is time to drag in a druid or that paladin I've been avoiding. Why is it humans in 2e can be anything but the other races are so limited / constricted? Write up as a level 1 or what the books say about one level below the party average? (lvl 4?)
It's called balance milord because humans don't get all the bonuses that the otherr races get. Granted it kinda suck but it's one of the very few advantages of playing a human...
Humans -- the round eared outcasts of the fantasy world. :p

Would there be anything in party loot worth talking about, regarding the current cemetery situation? Any item(s) found by players that may or may not have been identified, either on their own character sheet, or added to the list unbeknownst to other adventurers? If a player possesses something that might be pivotal to surviving the whole affair, this might be an apropo time to bring it up and discuss it.
Kyra has some flasks of lantern oil. From the party loot list -- From the moldy temple, we have a rod of 'fire' (which detected as powerful AND might be capable of more). Figure we could make them burn faster??? Other than that, a wand of smiting, the polymorph wand (too many to do them all)... and mostly cures and each of us have a resurrection potion available (drops CON by one). No 'magical buzzsaws of swarming' or bark to stone... though... wonder if a druid would allow that to happen to trees? Maybe toss out that magical tower and have it 'go big' and smash whatever is underneath it?... without overkilling our party by too much? Karmadel's 'make stone' -- could he have a column come DOWN from the ceiling to smash / cover some of the trees? Maybe a giant 'make water' spell that then is made to 'instant freeze' so all the tree get locked in place? Of course all those 'BIG SPELLS' would tend to hammer those in the thick of the trees too I suppose.
Anybody got a 'trees to toothpicks' wand in their backpack?
Well what's animating the trees in the first place? You can't tell me that they are all Ents. Has anybody tried to disbelieve illusion? Maybe if you could find whatever's animating the trees and destroy it they would all fall silent just an idea mind you...
They didn't move until a number of people entered the room... and Kell stepped off the path and was entangled. Aaron had gone all the way to the back 'insect holes' and saw how many trees were in the area... which matches the number blocking the doorway. Since we ran into ghasts and ghouls and insect dudes, the only other critter (so far) would be the doppelgänger but, that is not to say some hinkey magic user didn't set some form of 'alert/trap' animation of the trees to keep an eye on the undead that might be under all those gravestones. Or whatever does not 'detect' in the crypt/tool shed.
Was there any sort of warning about the path ie "not to step off of it?" Or better yet a sign saying "stay off the lawn or you'll be sorry!" LOL bloody hell kell way to completely screw the party over. Ah well what can not be changed must be endured right o boss?
Think that sign on the crypt did say something about not picking the carnivorous plants and keeping dwarves on a leash...
i dont know if there is a leash made for this dwarf :P

Well no one stepped of the path till the trees started attacking and 3 trees blocked the door you came through. And if this diety summon don't work the best bet would for you all to run for the crypt and get inside. Yes some of you will take attacks of opportunity, but fighting against all odds is more of a suicide. And so far kell is tangled up and someone might be able to free him or he could break free if it got weak enough from the vines being on fire, and someone get our nuked comrade off the ground even though he's dead we can still attempt to save him. And atm the only one that would take attacks of opportunity would be Leaxle since he's in the corner. the rest that can move can declare retreat so you can take a 5' step back and then run to the crypt. Yes you don't know whats in there and at least you know it's not evil if anything is in there, but you do know what is going to happen if you stay with the trees. P.S. whoops i forgot the 3 trees behind you by the crypt. so those that take the 5' step would at least only take 2 attacks of opportunity and lucky there is only 1 attack from an attack of opportunity and not the full 4 attacks that each tree does. And Leaxle is just screwed..... lol have him Hide in Shadows and pray it rolls an 001 on the precentile lol, cause with that roll even in the brightest light you found that 1 sliver of shadow to hid in. (btw the hide in shadows was just a j/k).

And btw this is the stats on the rod of smiting.......) Rod of Smiting: This rod is a +3 magical weapon that inflicts 1d8+3 points of damage. Against golems, the rod causes 2d8+6 points of damage, and any score of 20 or better completely destroys the golem. Any hit upon a golem drains one charge. The rod causes normal damage (1d8+3) versus creatures of the Outer Planes. Any score of 20 or better draws off one charge and causes triple damage: (1d8+3) x3. The rod cannot be recharged. But my character doesn't know all that yet, till a full identify is done on it, just like the wand of fire.
you guys really stepped in it this time.
