Custom Loading screen between pages

September 14 (12 years ago)
I was just thinking about how I might have a image of a area that is just facing it like doors to a castle or the entrance to a cave and how I sometimes want to show this to the users. It would be cool if I could dictate that when someone transistions to the page it loads this image for a duration instead of the Roll20 loading screen.

You could still have the Roll20logo/ watermark using a High quailty png with transparent background - top left - bottom right etc.. - choice of GM :D when setting the image

its a good idea to set the scene & mood for the next campaign session

Jeez, how long are your load times? Mine are on the order of a few seconds. If I want to show the players something while they're exploring the woods or whatnot, I just take a page, put a picture of a forest on it, resize the page and remove the gridlines. Then I can leave it there as long as I need while the players explore about. If it was on a loading screen, it would be like "Oh hey, woods" then it'd be gone.

Maybe I am misunderstanding your point though.

I've had some pretty cruddy load times in the minute or longer range. Though it's not constant, and I'm fairly certain it's not my end that's causing it, but I deal , cause I like roll20

@ Canso my loading times aren't bad, but it would be more to set the scene.

Having a ton of pages is hard to manage too. I'd rather everything about a scene/page/area be on a part of the page.

So if I could upload some image, set a time (in seconds as it wouldn't have to be long, probably 45 seconds so I could set the scene verbally with the visual aide I think that'd be cool.

In the one game I've dm'd so far when I jumped around pages to show a cave enterance peoples browsers messed up. Perhaps I didn't let it sit long enough to load it.

I think one of the biggest problems would be the inconsistency of load times.

Say, hypothetically, you have 5 players in your group. Player #1 has a Super top of the line gaming rig, and a 50 Megabit "Ultra Lightning ++ internet plan.

His loading time is going to be on the order of seconds, so it'll flash past so fast that he might not even notice your fabulous establishing shot of the castle gates, and the archers peeking out of the murder holes etc.

Meanwhile, player #2 with his 8 year old P4 sporting 256 megs of ram and his "basic" 1 Megabit connection, is going to have all the time in the world to study that image (If the Jpeg loads before the map finishes loading)

As much as I think it's a neat concept, I think that the loading screen is the wrong place for it.

You'd be better off creating a separate page for your establishing image, moving the players there, allowing for time to study, discuss, doodle mustaches etc, and then move them on to the next map page.
