Any advice for running interesting NPCs?

Not that I would be so great in person, but I feel like this is extra-challenging over roll 20.  Only half my group is on video, and the video is really small below the roll20 interface.  Any tips?  I just feel like I am boring the players to death.

Invite a real person to play an npc.  I have friends that can't commit to a scheduled game, so I occasionally invite them to play an npc.  Of course you'll need to prep for such an occasion giving your guest npc player some guidelines, motivations, limitations, etc. Another trick I use for npc's is to use the personality of someone I know.  If not a real person, you might want to "borrow" from a fictional character from books, tv, movies, video games, whatever. Good luck.
