Fate Conbat

I'm a huge fan of the game Fate. I have a game starting up next week but need some help. I can't understand the damage rules to save my life (ironic). I keep rereading the rules but it confuses me so much. Can some please simplify the rules of damage, stress, and consequences for me. Thank you.
- There is no such thing as damage - Characters have Stress and Consequences - An attack inflicts shifts of success to the target character - Each stress box reduces the shifts by the ammount of the box checked off (a 2 stress box removes 2 shifts of success) - you can use a higher stress box to reduce a lower shift value (ie if there are 3 shifts of damage, you can check off a 4 stress box) - anything that's left over has to be absorbed by consequences in the same manner
Is a shift a certain number of points? Or is it just one?
