Halloween Adventure

Hey guys,&nbsp; I want to do something for Halloween. I don't have anything set in stone right now, but here is the idea I'm toying with. I will update the rules and expectations here so you can just reference this original post to get all the info rather than scouring the thread. It is a one shot adventure (or possibly a series of one-shots) with a Halloween theme.&nbsp; Everyone who is interested makes two level 20 characters.&nbsp; Standard or point buy Attributes.&nbsp; Max hit points for all levels.&nbsp; Each character gets 1 Legendary, 1 Very Rare, 2 Rare, and 4 Uncommon&nbsp; magic items. However please don't take any gotcha or silly items. Examples are Deck of Many Things or the Apparatus of Kwalish. Basically things that take too long to read what they do as the entire session will become reading item descriptions. Good item choices are things with direct stat increases. A middle of the road example is the Staff of the Adder - if you choose something like that please make a macro for it so we can easily and quickly reference the wording. Starting kit for equipment as normal plus 500 gold. Wizards may spend their wizard level ×300 in gold on adding spells to their spell book. For example a 9th level wizard would gain 1800 gold for adding spells. This is in addition to the spells you gain per level. This bonus money may only be spent to add spells to your spell book, or on components to cast those spells. <a href="http://donjon.bin.sh/5e/spells/" rel="nofollow">http://donjon.bin.sh/5e/spells/</a> has a sortable list with ritual filter ( you're welcome:) ) The adventure(s) are set in Ravenloft. It might seem like the obvious choice is a Life domain cleric. However, the forces of evil are much stronger in Ravenloft so things like Turn Undead and Radiant damage may not be as effective as they are in the material world. Also, those who 'fight fire with fire'; things like Necromancy or Death Domain, will have to roll on a Fallen table to see how much effect the ennui of the realm has on them. I will also be using the Sanity rules from the DMG with a few adjustments. Here's your backstory: Long you have trained in the Praetorian Guard. In order to join you had to leave behind family and friends; you even had to fake your own death so that the forces of darkness could not trace your origins to use against you. For fighting the darkness is your duty. Your entire life you have devoted to the eradication of evil: from the study of lore on each abomination to the martial training required to defeat them. For some the clear path to destroying evil is to seek it out and smite it wherever you find it with holy zeal and fervor. For others the only way to truly defeat the enemy is to become like it - to match the darkness with your own hatred and vile ways. Whatever your approach you are a tight-knit fighting force, trained and focused for one goal: Seeking out and eradicating evil on its own turf. Think Hellboy, The Watchmen, The Avengers; that sort of thing. A group of superheroes who may or may not be good people but are united for a common cause. I'm tentatively planning this for Saturday, October 24 so it doesn't interfere with actual Halloween. If you're interested reply to this post and I'll assign you two special templates. If there's not enough interest and you'd rather play Princes of the Apocalypse that's fine too, so let me know either way. I'm not going to run a game nobody wants to play! Thanks.
Sounds like a really cool idea. Though I'm a little scared of what are you going to throw at us if we get that much stuff hehe. You can count me in! :)
Well yes obviously it's a chance for me to be a little crazy/creative. The module is great but I miss coming up with my own stuff sometimes :) Just to be clear I'm not entirely sure I'll have time to set this up with only two weeks of prep, it's just something I thought might be fun.
This sounds fun as hell! &nbsp;I might actually see if I can ask for a night off from work for this!
This is a no-brainer I'm in when ever whereever
I had also considered doing this on a Sunday, or possibly continuing it from Saturday to Sunday if it turns out to last that long. I wouldn't ask for the day off just yet - I'm still on the fence. Maybe I could get some help building monsters? I can assign templates if anyone is interested in building some stuff out of the book for me. That's the biggest issue time-wise.
You know I'd be glad to help you guild monsters Ben.&nbsp; And I'm glad you're considering this for the weekend before Halloween, since I have been volunteered to chaperone the youth's lockin at church for Halloween.
Oh yeah, no I'll definitely hold off and getting a day off (not that I wouldn't want it anyway, lol) until things are finalized. &nbsp;Interest is still piqued though. :)
I'll get some templates assigned then. I'm thinking of leaving all the rolls public since this one will be more about the gruesomeness than the immersion, and sharing good/bad rolls adds to the fun. The Halloween templates will be listed under a special heading so you'll know which ones to make level 20. Thanks Shawn, I'll set up a bunch of empty templates with the names of the monsters I want built.
I think this sounds great. Are there any restrictions on magic items?
No legendary items?? :(&nbsp; PS I'll build monsters for you just let me know which monsters and how you want the macros you could make an example on for me too follow
Wow sounds like a lot of high level fun.
May I join as well!? This sounds awesome
Also I can help with monsters
Do you need all the background, ideals ect or is this just a hack and slash special??

The reason I didn't include Legendary items is because there are too many silly-type things in that category. So how's this instead: 1 &nbsp; Legendary, 1 Very Rare, 2 Rare, and 4 Uncommon. But with this caveat: No gotcha or silly items. I'm talking about things like Deck of Many Things or the Apparatus of Kwalish. The reason is I don't want to spend the entire session reading what the hell these things can do; I'd rather focus on the dungeon and the Halloween event itself. So things like Armor of Invulnerability or Hammer of Thunderbolts are fine - those just make you more badass and are easy stat increases. You don't have to worry as much about background, etc, as this is all about the adventure itself. I have a background built in for you: Long you have trained in the Praetorian Guard.

I was so very excited when you announced this.&nbsp; Alas, I will not be able to play, as we're going on vacation that weekend to Richmond.&nbsp; Hitting Busch Gardens and spending a couple of days at Great Wolf Lodge.&nbsp; While I could probably take my laptop and actually play, I have a feeling I would gain a whole heap of wife aggro.
Yeah I see what your saying about the stupid legendary items but I just want some of the kickass weapons and armour lol
Thank you Ben for the sortable spell book...Take notes Wizards of the Coast. :) Nice for the wizard to get money for extra spells. One question though...Is it assumed any spell earned this way comes with any needed components for at least one use. Meaning any spell with a component that is consumable. Or do we spend this wizard gold for spells money for those consumables too?
That's a good question on spell components. Let's up the gold to 3× wizard level but you also have to buy the spell components. I don't know much about upper level magic so let me know how the math works on that.
I got so excited thinking of possible builds I think I wee'd a bit!! Too many possibilities struggling to pick just 2 lol XD
Yeah you're a shoe-in for this one James. I think you've built more characters to 20 than Wizards of the Coast has!
I edited the original post to clarify rules and add a few notes. I'll keep the original post updated as rules clarify so you can just reference there for all info.
I...CAN'T...WAIT.
As you build your level 20s please copy paste your abilities to your bio. If it's something that requires a roll or check please make a macro for it. If you need help making a custom macro send me a PM or post it here and I'll set it up. With a bunch of level 20s the less we have to reference the book, the better.
Thank you. Great idea to speed things along.
Just an FYI so nobody is surprised - the flying broom requires a free hand. Also don't forget the limit of 3 attuned items.
I've set a handful of blank templates to All Players. If anyone is interested in helping me build them, feel free to snag one. I'd advise you put your name in the bio if you want to claim it - that way multiple people don't have their fingers in the cookie jar at once. Check the Iron Golem's setup for how I'd like them filled out. Thanks ahead of time. Also, for the most part Sentient magic items are out. I haven't looked at all of them, but those I have seen are too wordy for a light/fun adventure. As a general rule if the description is more than two paragraphs it's probably going to bog the game down.
I am interested!
Looking forward to this, but can you explain how sanity will work?
I don't have all the details yet but in the Ravenloft setting the force of darkness (The plane itself) is always trying to consume you. Anytime you use a necromancy spell or try to control undead you'll make a WIS or CHA save. Or anytime you see something especially awful or a team mate die. On a failed save you gain a detriment. I have a deck of cards from 4E that came with the shadowfell book that I'll be drawing from. Mostly they will be short term recovering on a short rest or the lesser restoration spell. But there may be special cases that are harder to get rid of.
Takes me back to Call of Cthulu games in my youth.
Tomorrow is the big day. I didn't get as much done as I'd like so it will be a little bumpy. I haven't looked at your characters yet so I'm in for some surprises. But I had a few final thoughts. If you're a caster read over your spells and be sure you know how they function. I am not familiar at all with higher level magic so I'm sure there will be some gotcha moments.&nbsp; I'm running this like a horror movie so I'm asking a favor. I know there are spells that let you basically win without a fight but in the spirit of Halloween and everybody's good time I hope you use these sparingly and don't just say "we win game over". Please copy paste your items in your bio with full descriptions. I'd also like them in descending order starting with Legendary. Also copy paste your class features so if we need to reference Info it's quick.&nbsp; If there is something you need set up ahead of time like summoned creatures or polymorph forms send me a PM so I can get started on it. Thanks.
Just to clarify my lecture on magic - be creative with your spells, that's part of the fun. I'm mostly referring to spells like Wish where the effect can ruin the story. But there are a lot of lower level spells that you will probably need to survive/win.
For those looking to spend that 500g: Potion of Healing = 50g (2d4+2) Potion of Resistance = 75g Potion of Greater Healing = 100g (4d4+4) Potion of Supreme Healing = 250g (8d4+4) Potion of Fire Breath = 100g Potion of Growth = 250g Potion of Water Breathing = 50g
Bad news: Going to bed kinda late, and planning on sleeping in on my weekend. I updated start time, but keep in mind that's kind of a 'setting up last minute player stuff' time; give me another 30 minutes or so for actual game time. Good news: Got everything set up on my end for a good time. Meh news: &nbsp;I have no idea how to scale encounters at level 20 so either you guys will waltz through easily or everybody (except the bearbarians) will die, but hopefully have a good time!
I completely missed the joke in going for a trip attack on a 40ft balrog and instead cutting its head off. Gotta work on my aim, I guess x)
Well that's what happens when you go snicker snack with a vorpal sword! <a href="http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/171647" rel="nofollow">http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/171647</a>
I meant to do this sooner.&nbsp; I want to thank Shawn for all his work on setting up monsters for this event even though he couldn't join. You're a gentleman and a scholar.
I aspire to be as Gentlemanly and Scholarly as Shawn one day.
