Making a copy of a map

July 23 (12 years ago)

Currently I'm trying to make several floors of an apartment complex. So each floor has the same base but I would fill it with different NPCs/Rooms/signs of decay to block off paths and make new ones. Problem is copying a map seems to be an impossible feat that requires making a whole new campaign. Duplication only makes a map with the same Dimentions and trying to copy paste the background into it caused it to crash several times. Anything I can do?

Have you gone into the map listing and duplicated the map page? It is on the right side of the map page. The gear (settings) is on the left and the page duplication (twisty arrows) is on the right.

Metroknight, duplicating the page only duplicates the settings of the page, not everything that is on it, sadly.

Nate N., could you tell me how you constructed the map?  Is it a single background image?  Tiles? Drawing with the drawing tools?  I'm surprised that copy and paste is causing it to crash.

That rucks. I thought it duped the whole things. Sorry about that Nate, I was wrong.

Are you using images that you imported into Roll20, Nate?

Using tiles. Not a whole image. So I guess I gotta just rebuild the map Maybe I should just move to making maps in GIMP and then putting them up.

Nate N., GIMP is definitely a good option.  If you have a very complicated map, it would also use less resources to make it a single image.

How I duplicate maps in Roll20:

First (old) option:
1) Duplicate the map (ie, settings).
2) Enlarge the page (canvas) size to about double what it normally is
3) Go to the map you would like to copy.
4) Set the layer to the map layer
5) Click on the map and then hit Ctrl+A (select all) followed by Ctrl+C (copy)
6) Go to the new map, click on the center, hit Ctrl+V (paste)
7) Click on the map and hit Cltr+A (select all). While holding down the Alt key move the entire thing where you want it.
8) Repeat steps 5-7 for the other layers.
9) Restore the original page (canvas) size.

Second (new) option:
1) Copy/Extend your game
2) Transmogrify the map you want from the copy to the original.
3) Delete the copy.

I am planning on adding an option so you can duplicate pages including content inside the same campaign, FYI. I consider it an oversight that it hasn't been added already. Hopefully soon(tm) :-)
