So, the campaign takes place in Talingarde. Long ago, some guy named Markadian went around and killed or banished all the bad guys. He became the first king and is known as "The Victor". Several other kings have come after him, I think we're on the fifth, Markadian V. Talingarde used to worship both Mitra, god of light and healing and all that good stuff, and Asmodeus, god of evil and bad stuff, but they stopped doing that after one of Markadian's descendants told them not to. The player characters are acting in service to Cardinal Thorn, the last known high priest of Asmodeus in Talingarde. He's got a plan to throw the nation into chaos and we're helping him. To that end, we (the PCs) have: -supplied weapons to an army of monsters lead by a Bugbear named Fireaxe. -infiltrated Balentyne Keep and destroyed their defenses, opening the way for Fireaxe's army to enter Talingarde. -summoned a plague demon named Vetra-Kali who was banished by Markadian the First and acquired a super plague. We've since handed over the demonic super plague, known as the Tears of Achlys, to another of Cardinal Thorn's servants. Now we're taking command of a section of Fireaxe's army and plan to assault a place of great importance to the Mitran faith (it's called the Vale of Something or Other, I can't remember the exact name) and destroy it utterly.
