Overcoming shyness?

I have a problem.  I enjoy DM'ing for a single friend of mine; I don't really have problems putting out adventures or dialogue or whatnot, but when I think of doing these things with a group of strangers, my shyness kicks in and I can't bring myself to even try.  I really want to get a group going but I'm terrified of putting myself and my "work" out in front of strangers.  Does anyone have any advice or whatnot for helping me ease myself into DM'ing for strangers?  As a side note, I don't like one-shot adventures, I would much rather have a longer, multi-adventure campaign.
My advice is, drink heavily... or....maybe a "text only" campaign might work better for you.  Also, even though you don't like one-shots, you could develop a one shot that is built in to a campaign.  You could advertise and run the one shot for a group and if it doesn't work out (i.e. players don't show up, personalities don't mesh, etc.) you've only wasted an evening or two, but if you like the players (or just a couple of them) and want to continue, it could just naturally flow into the extended campaign allowing you to handpick the players you like and want to continue with.  You should treat people like snakes, they are usually more scared (shy) of you then you are of them

I agree that a text-only campaign is probably a good solution. It adds a layer of anonymity since the other players don't see your face or hear your voice, and that step of separation often lets shy people come out of their shells a bit more. (It's not a perfect solution and it doesn't work for everyone, of course. I know I've seen shy players in text-only campaigns remain shy by simply not saying things, for example.) I would also recommend a " Session Zero " before the campaign proper starts. It gives you an opportunity to meet the other players and get to know each other as people outside of the game. It also gives you a chance to get everyone on the  same page , which will improve the campaign overall. For a digital platform like Roll20, Session Zero also serves as a filter for making sure the players that sign up actually intend to show up. There are players who will shotgun sign up for games, but they obviously don't have time to actually play them all, and they might not inform anyone in the campaign(s) they don't end up playing, nor drop from the campaign themselves. In the games I've run, missing Session Zero without notifying me of being unable to show up is an auto-kick from the campaign.

You could pre-record some vocal or roleplaying narrations like an introduction of the adventure, and upload them to Soundcloud, and play it back in your game's Jukebox. Then once the conversation starts, keep going.

Unfortunately, this is off-topic for our forums and I'm going to have to move this to the off-topic locker.  The Code of Conduct opens with: The Roll20 Forums exist to discuss topics directly related to the use of the Roll20 program.
