Pushing for android, full-site view gaming compatability

Morning All, Probably this is open elsewhere, but I fail to find it. Here I am, posting this via my android phone...yet I cannot play anything via it. What's that about? I appreciate the added complications of making all this work in the iOS, but unless my ognorance is truly overwhelming, if I were allowed to view the full sites capacities while playing a game here, shouldn't it somehow work on er phone? I just don't see why, for forums etc. I can use the full site view, while for joining a game it doesn't allow me to do such. Please rectify, as I may cry solitarily for this but apart from checking on er phone I'd hardly get a chance to game here otherwise, what with work and commitments!! Thanks in advance for your time, Arden

Stefano, this is due to Roll20 utilizing the very latest in HTML5 tech. Phone browsers just aren't savvy enough to handle it. That being said, we are currently heading towards the alpha testing phase for tablet mobile support.
I'm glad to hear this Kristin (or should I say...Layton!), but while progressing to the future is important, surely alienating all the many, many, many people who haven't got the latest HTML 5 coding and rely on older browsing experiences is strange, no? And I'm especially surprised about not being able to use it on Android -it's not like it's a small user base! I know, you're not running a business, but I would of thought that such an awesome concept as bringing pen-and-paper RPGing to the digital era should also be available to everyone, including myself lol!
surely alienating all the many, many, many people who haven't got the latest HTML 5 coding and rely on older browsing experiences is strange, no? Except that it is HTML5, I think, that makes programs like Roll20 possible at all. So I am not sure that there is a choice here. And anyway, on a computer, there is nothing that prevent peoples to upgrade to newer browsers.
I think that currently is an alpha --but working-- mobile version of Roll20 not only for iOS but for Android too, not yet "released" but still available for people with a Mentor account.
Yep, we mentors are lucky enough to get to alpha test the android/ios mobile device support. For android, you need to be using the mobile version of the chrome browser -- at least so far. And I'm pretty sure Patrick is right that the whole thing runs on HTML 5. Or at least all the fun features seem too. :) Sadly, older browsers just do not have the capacity to use a lot of new features on the web. I'm sure most web developers have foreseen this day would come and dreaded it...

Canvas, an HTML5 feature, is what is used to display your maps/images/tokens, etc. We are utilizing other HTML5 elements, but Canvas is the essential one that makes Roll20 behave like a virtual tabletop. This is why you need an HTML5 compatible browser. Other users have pointed out that our mobile alpha of Roll20 is compatible with both Android and iOS tablets. Also, Arden, Roll20 *is* a business. I'm not sure what has made you think otherwise.
Sarah A. said, (. . .) And I'm pretty sure Patrick is right that the whole thing runs on HTML 5. Or at least all the fun features seem too. :) Sadly, older browsers just do not have the capacity to use a lot of new features on the web. I'm sure most web developers have foreseen this day would come and dreaded it... You are right, but on the other hand, we have the example of Internet Explorer 9: it works perfectly well for running Roll20 if you add to it the Google Chrome Frame (<a href="http://www.google.com/chromeframe?quickenable=true" rel="nofollow">http://www.google.com/chromeframe?quickenable=true</a>). I wonder if the same goes for other browsers as well, or for browsers running in mobile devices without native HTML5 support. But this maybe doesn't matter at this point since Roll20 is already running in iOS and Android web browsers . . . For what is worth, actually my Internet Explorer 9 with the Google Chrome Frame is running Roll20 very fast and efficiently, even faster --when it's about moving images and maps-- than running just the app in the Chrome browser. Now, overally speaking I prefer Chrome for a variety of reasons. Kristin C. said, Also, Arden, Roll20 *is* a business. I'm not sure what has made you think otherwise. This also baffled me a bit.
Good point, Axel. Chrome frame and similar apps do expand the user base to a degree. I was thinking more along the lines of folks who refuse (or for some reason can't) update their browser past, say, IE6 or something. There's a point when backward compatibility begins to hinder development of new web technologies and older platforms have to be left behind... But I think that's a whole 'nother discussion, maybe. Nice to know about how well chrome frame works, though! I haven't felt the need to try it out myself, but if it is more efficient, it's worth a look-see. :)
Lol so it does run on mobile then?!? As usual got it all face to derrier. All I'm concerned is to somehow use it on the mobile: if that means a small fee each month, then that to me is acceptable. Lol I'd comment on the business thing, but since it would start derailing this thread there's no point: I am sated with my tyrannical demands, ta :)
