Session 54: Wulrakas Gets His Wings

Edited 1460646881
Date: 8-9th Patchwall, 609 CY Attendance: Wulrakas, Jareth, Cat ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recap: After reading over the necromancer's journal, Wulrakas and Jareth scoop up frozen-Cat and return to their demiplane. Setting Cat near the hearth to thaw, they learn that Rexi and the others have not yet returned. However, while Thruskk was out gathering some of his belongings from his old forge, he found a strange note addressed to the group. Jareth opens it and finds a set of unusual coordinates, as well as a small, coin-sized gem. He immediately makes plans to discern the location from someone, as neither he, Wulrakas nor Thruskk are able to. To accomplish this, he reaches out to his new contact: the noblewoman he met a few weeks prior. After making initial contact with her handmaiden, he and Wulrakas meet the woman (Jezebel) at an inn catering to small-folk in one of the lower districts. Jezebel says she'll set a meet with one of her husband's cartographers, so after shoo'ing Woolie away through the portal to their Demiplane home, Jareth remains behind to tend to "unfinished business." He follows after Woolie shortly thereafter. The two rest and Cat is able to thaw and return to life. They return to the inn's bedroom and accidentally barge into a couple's... intimate moment. The halfling man gasps, recognizing Cat and Wulrakas from the wanted posters around town. Apparently a five-hundred gold piece reward has been offered to anyone who brings Cat, Wulrakas, Jareth or Thruskk in alive. Each. There's no mention of Virgil, Alena or Rexi. Cat begins to plot. He convinces the halfling man to act like he's bringing them in, and then collect the reward. Cat figures since they've escaped imprisonment on more than one occasion, that this will be no different. The halfling will then get a cut of the profit. ... The plan is their most disastrous and foolhardy yet. They are whisked into the Duke's throne room, only to see the leader flanked by: an assortment of well-trained, well armored guards, a powerful kobold wizard, Lila Ketborn, Shalashka (the Raksasha that has eluded them twice now), and the boy himself. The boy cannot believe his eyes; he knew the group was brash, but not this foolish. Walking straight into the lion's den... Immediately a fireball is launched by the kobold wizard, damaging the party and outright killing the halfling. Only the poor sop's smoldering boots remain. A battle proceeds. Wulrakas is plagued by a draconic voice, telling him to "use the crystal." Wulrakas, dumbfounded, begins to shout things like: "the crystal!," not knowing the meaning. The group probably thinks the Dragonborn's extended career as an adventurer has finally gotten to him. Thruskk is nearly killed by Lila Ketborn, but Jareth realizes that the crystal might be related to the one that was given with the strange coordinates. He pulls it out and notices that it's pulsating. Thrusting it into Lila Ketborn's face, the group (and Lila Ketborn) are transported to a small valley flanked by high cliffs. They easily dispatch Lila and her body disintegrates. Thruskk is gravely wounded. Stabilizing Thruskk, they allow him to rest back at the demiplane. Upon returning to the cliffs, a passage opens nearby. They follow it down a narrow tunnel, disabling traps as they go. Finally, at the end, they find a door. Cat mage hands it, which sets off a trap with both attempts. However, they also see some draconic writing on the face of the door, and they realize that only someone of dragon blood can open it. Wulrakas does so. Inside, they find an enormous but venerable old dragon. This is later revealed to be Falx Templamut, Wulrakas' creator and... "father," in a sense. The group is chastised for their foolhardy attempt at Duke's castle. Some pertinent information is revealed, such as: "Dragonborns was a mistake," "You share a common goal with your enemy but he's actually doing it for selfish, power-grabbing reasons," and "Yothagos can be stopped, but only through the use of time travel."  Falx implores them to become more powerful before confronting the boy a second time. He also offers his aid in the form of wings for Wulrakas, which now sprout from the Dragonborn's back. To Cat and Jareth he offers two magical items. He tells them he can teleport them wherever they wish to go. Looking through a map, they decide on... Edgefield. Why? Who knows. Let the training montage begin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Experience: Alena – 0 XP (118,650 XP total) Wulrakas - 10,000 XP (230,750 XP total) LEVEL UP 17 Virgil - 0 XP (162,850 XP total) Cat - 10,000 XP (185,500 XP total) Jareth - 10,000 XP (181,500 XP total)  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Loot: Strange Ring (Identified - Requires Attunement) - Cat This gold banded ring has an odd trinket in the center: a gemstone shaped like an eyeball. Clearly magical. Mechanical:    While wearing this ring, you can use an action to speak its command word. When you do so, you can see into and through solid matter for 1 minute. This vision has a radius of 30 feet. To you, solid objects within that radius appear transparent and don't prevent light from passing through them. The vision can penetrate 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal , or up to 3 feet of wood or dirt. Thicker substances block the vision, as does a thin sheet of lead. Whenever you use the ring again before taking a long rest, you must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or gain one lev e l of exhaustion. Wulrakas' Wings - Wulrakas These wings resemble those of a silver dragon. Their initial sprouting has caused the back-plate of Wulrakas' armor to shatter, exposing a few leather straps that hold his chestplate to his body. His back is now slightly exposed, but it's also easier to remove the armor with the newly formed wings.  Mechanical: Can fly at a speed of 50 feet when wearing light or no armor. When wearing medium or heavy armor, fly speed is reduced to 25 feet. Dragon Bongo Drums (Requires Attunement) - Cat Looking to be specifically designed for Cat, these diminutive bongos are dyed a light, almost turquoise blue. Thin silver netting lines the base of each drum, making a tapestry resembling something like a spider web. On the larger drum the image of a powerful dragon blowing a gust of ice-wind is seen on the side; on the smaller, two female dragons, looking equally ferocious, are etched in. Falx has revealed this to be him and his two consorts. Mechanical: Instrument of the bards is an exquisite example of it kind , superior to an ordinary instrument in every way.   A creature tha t attempts to play the instrument without being attuned to it must succ ee d on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or take 2d4 psychic damag e . You can use an action to play the instrument and cas t one of its spells. On ce the instrument has be e n used t o cast a spell, it can't be used to cast that spell again unt il th e ne x t dawn. Th e spells us e your spe ll casting ability and spell save DC. When you use the instrum e nt to cas t a spell that causes targets to b eco me charmed on a failed save , th e targets hav e disadvantage on the saving throw . This effect applies whether you are using the instrument a s the source of the spell or as a spellcasting focus. Spells:  Fly, invisibility, levitate ,  protection from evil and good (evil only) , c ure wounds (3rd level),  dispe l   magic, protection from energy  (fire  only) Falx's Scale Token - Jareth A variation of Quaal's Feather Tokens (bird), this tiny object looks like a shimmering silver dragon scale. Unlike Quaal's tokens, however, Falx's scales are not a one-time use and can be recharged every day at dawn. Mechanical:  You can use an action to toss the token 5 feet into the air. The token disappears and an enormous , silver dragon takes its place. The dragon has the statistics of a roc (see the Monster Manual) , but it obe ys your simple commands and can ' t attack . It can carry up to 500 pounds whil e flying at its maximum speed (16 miles an hour for a maximum of 144 miles per da y . with a one-hour r e st f o r e very 3 hours of flying), or 1 , 0 0 G po unds at half that speed. The dragon  disappea rs after flyi ng its maximum distanc e for a day or if it drops to 0 hi t points . You can dismiss th e dragon   as an act ion . Note: the dragon can dismiss itself on its turn as well, usually if it finds itself being used for nefarious purposes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Falx Templamut will talk in circles and bless you with great magics, but only if you post "thank you mr. templamut" in this thread
