I am making a list of the fallen so that I can keep track of who is dying in Maladon, their levels and why. At the moment, death seems disproportionately a low level phenomena and also seems to be hitting the arcane classes very badly. 1) Dorn Dundragon; Rogue of the Blue Sashes (lvl 1) 2) Lydika; Mage and Demonhunter  (lvl 2) 3) Thorgrim Shieldbreaker (fighter lvl 1) 4) Samuel Tyler (paladin lvl 1) 5) Dithas Hawkwing; Mage of the Blue Sashes (lvl 1) 6) Erolith Adna; Warlock of the Elves (lvl 3) 7) Eddon Immortai; Elven Mage (lvl 1) 8) Ashton the Druid (Druid lvl 1) 9) Jakelil Bohalin (fighter lvl 1) 10) Flint Rockseeker (cleric lvl 1) 11) Isabella Greatoven (cleric lvl 1) 12) Reskin (Warlock lvl 4) 13) Meren (Fighter/Warlock lvl 4) 14) Kaetan (Rogue lvl 3) 15) Laila (Sorceror Lvl 3) 16) John Heron (Fighter Lvl 3) 17) Arklef (Rogue Level 1) 18) Grimm (Dwarf Sorceror Level 1) 19) Ashton Nackle (Human Monk Level 2) 20) Amalina (Elf Warlock Level 2) 21) Horcus (Arcane Fighter level 4) 22) Imrith of the Moredhel (Bard level 1) 23) Killborn of the Dragonkin (Wizard level 1) 24) Matthius of Sol (Cleric level 2) 25) IIdra (Ranger level 2) 26) Kheel (Wizard level 1) 27) Sabaufein (Paladin level 4) 28) Syvil Dernssonn (Paladin Level 5) 29) Kasper (Human Rogue Level 1) 30) Mileena (Sithi Rogue Level 1) 31) Vander (Human Fighter Level 1) 32) Kraitor (Human Wizard Level 2) 33) Eriko (Genasi Cleric Level 2) 34) Tarvok (Dwarven Cleric Level 1) 35) Eryn (Elven Rogue level 2) 36) Barnaball (Dragonborn Paladin level 1) 37) Zasheir Khalid (Human Fighter/cleric level 2) 38) Luca Scipio Lupus (Shifter Fighter lvl 3) 39) Kroasi (Druid level 4) 40) Sadie (Rogue level 4) 41) Artorius (Fighter level 2) 42) Sanctrias (Fighter1/Paladin 1) 43) Ventus (Warlock 2/ Sorceror 1) 44) Veranis (Wizard level 3) 45) Semortis the Rogue 46) Cloud of the Tabaxi

Yeah; and we have the problem that we don't have balanced parties in Maladon, so in one case three characters died because three of the PCs out of 4 were casters. Casters need meatshields
ya we do or more magic items
I think we underestimated what could go wrong, though lesson learnt (I think) :)

Its not really surprising that low level characters suffer the most, they can be taken down in one hit, especially if its a crit. The hit that took out Dithas(40-something damage wasn't it?) would have killed any level one character outright or even level two no matter what their class was. Lydika's death also came down I think to the badluck of Syvil rolling poorly to find his way out of the smoke, and then syvil himself only survived through luck on the death saving throws. Erolith's death also had a lot less to do with being a caster I think and a lot more to do with being completely alone against six assassins who had surprise on him, I dont think even Sharleen would have survived that. So while I definitely agree that it can be deadly for the first levels I don't think it's actually all that extra dangerous for the casters specifically, we might've just had some particularly unfortunate circumstances so far. Though I cant really speak to the deaths in Simon's session as ive not been able to catch up with it.

There is at least one dead dwarf missing from this list. He was in the the f2f group I think. Update: The dwarf in question has been added. One additional thought: Perhaps another reason why casters are more prominent on the list is the enemy types we face; all seem to target AC and many deal high damage. Both of which aren't really a mage's forte. It is also worth mentioning that many of the deaths so far have been insta gibbers; you get hit, either once or a lot, but HP goes from full to nothing without acting, without reacting. And as we know this party is bad at taking preventive actions before the issue arises, this kind of attack is especially lethal. Obviously I don't want ;) you to but - throw us a few well guarded mages with some nasty Wisdom save checks and the front line will die like flies I suspect; putting fear on a barbarian is a textbook example, or using Chill Touch against Clerics/Paladins...

Chart time everyone! I've set it up so that the Arcane, Divine and Martial classes are all wall to wall for an easy analysis. It seems to me that the split is rather equal. But Lies damn lies and statistics they say. And one should take into account the number of sessions played for each class and then calculate the odds of death for for each individual class. And even then the values could be skewed because not every session is equally dangerous.
D&D everyone

@Ithiloneth I am no longer unhappy with the danger level. In fact, I think we might have slightly overdone the adjustment given that 6 characters have died in the last 3 sessions................ And as for your suggestions about Mages; I hear you but you have to realise that magic is rare in the Empire and you have so far adventured in the part of Maladon where the Empire once held sway. I have lots and lots of very nasty magical places and creatures further in, but their effect is spoiled if every man and his dog is a mage, cleric or warlock..........

Wizard dog used fireball :) Now that I am finally on my computer; I agree that the danger level might be over the edge. That said, the three deaths in my session were caused by good, but well... Suboptimal? RP. There really should have been no reason for all of them to die. I agree on the topic of the mages as well; magic is better when it is treated more special. On the other hand we have been fighting many magical creatures; demon and undead alike. The only point I really wanted to make was that certain classes handle certain things better, and that there is certainly an unfairness to combat if the enemies focus too much on one type of attack. But I'm sure you know all this already, in either case I look forward to seeing what other perils hide on Maladon...

I heard that around session 25 the game was changed to be harder. In the following calculations I have included both cases.  Number of Sessions 80 Death Data Average Character level 1.91 Average deaths per session (-25) 0.64 Average deaths per session (All) 0.43 How many sessions for one death? (-25) 1.57 How many sessions for one death? (All) 2.29 Now for some data:

So I am the only DM ever to kill a character of higher than level 2; I did not realise that.... Well done Clarence; have a Bronze Pass for your trouble
Ernie killed Rurik, he was level 4...

Thanks, added it to the list! Do you know what class was he? Also, Elee killed Sabaufein, who was level 4 :). But that seems to be it.

Elee does beat you in terms of highest average level of killed character though ;).
Rurik was a level 4 cleric, killed by Ernie in cold blood using firey punches of death! (exaggerated of course, but still killed by firey punches of death.)
