Freehand drawing on tablet?

I have a lanovo yoga and I'm trying to use it in tablet mode to draw free hand.  It doesn't seem to register my finger for drawing.  would a stylus produce different results?  am I just doing something wrong?

I tried freehand drawing on my Surface Pro 4 with the pen and it works. Using my fingers doesn't really work. Well sometimes a line shows up on the screen if I make a real fast gesture, but that's not usable.
