Suggestions for a game?

Hi :) *waves* Hopefully, this is the right thread I'm relatively new to this hobby and I'm looking for a game suggestion I'd like to play a fantasy game, not a dark one or outright horror though... I've heard (not my opinion, just what I've been told ) that DnD is more fighting than story and that won't interest me. I like story and background.  So,I'd like to hear you recommendations and experiences :D Have a nice day Donna

Hey Donna,  Waves back Always good to have new people in the hobby. So welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy your time here on Roll20. As for the best game system in the world. I mean the one that will make your life complete, and cause birds to land in the palm of your hand, random joyous singing spontaneously break out around you and suddenly make your life become a Disney cartoon, I'd suggest. . .  that, that system does not exist. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you. All game systems are experienced subjectively and as a result each individual has a different perception of them. However, just because there isn't one single game system out there that is perfect for everyone. That doesn't mean that there isn't one perfect for YOU.  Each Dungeon Master/Game Master runs his/her games differently from the others. In my experience you can use any game system to tell a story but role playing is something that comes about due to the interaction of the other players' characters, the Game Master's Non-Player characters and you. If I were you, and looking for a solid role playing game, I'd test out a few groups and see how it goes. Rules can encourage or discourage role playing to an extent but it is the GM and other Players that will make or break the experience in the end.  My suggestion is this, play. Just get out there and play some games and see what you like. If you like the stuff they do in Critical Role (I'm just assuming that is what got you into the hobby, I could be wrong) then 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons is a good starting point, at least. However there are at least a couple hundred variations of fantasy rules systems to choose from but they can be hard to find here. I'd play the odds and just choose a few different 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons games and give them a try. Mainly because they would be easy to find and easy to get into. Once you establish a good core group then see if people are willing to branch out a bit into something else to gain experience. I hope that some of this made sense to you. And if you have questions you should by all means keep them to yourself er. . .I mean, post them!  ;)  I know lots of people would be more than willing to give you guidance. Happy hunting and best of luck to you Peace --Mike

From the Roll20 Community Code of Conduct : The Roll20 Forums exist to discuss topics directly related to the use of the Roll20 program. Anything that more fittingly could be discussed on another website SHOULD be discussed there. Here are some good places to discuss this topic: /r/rpg /r/dnd /r/dndnext /r/ADND /r/Pathfinder_RPG To get kicked off right, I'd suggest watching our introductory video series, Introduction to Tabletop RPGs , which covers the general idea of how they are played, which game to choose and then find a group of fellow gamers. Secondly, for the Virtual TableTop itself we have a Tutorial that shows you how to use the various parts of the software. Additionally, starting your own test game to play with the controls is an excellent way of getting used to the software, and you really can't break anything I promise! Thirdly, check out the Looking For Group Tool and Looking for Group Forum daily for games that may be of interest to you. Fourth, be sure to completely fill out your User Profile . Your Bio is where you have a chance to catch a GM's eye with a well-written statement about yourself Enjoys Playing is important for two reasons: Every entry you put here is a data-point for The Orr Group Industry Report of games being played, and it lets other people looking at your profile know a bit more about you Actively Seeks Group For is where you can add yourself to the Player Directory for systems you want to play We have a wiki that grows weekly and is very much worth exploring. Feel free to ask any questions you have about Roll20 by posting in the various sub-forums on their particular topics (Don't stress about putting topics in the right sub-forums, we mods really don't mind moving topics when needed!) Happy gaming
