Arthas dreams. He is in a ruined city, staring up at a beautiful woman with eagle wings. The woman floats above him, her wings outstretched but still. In one hand she wields a sword with Iomedae's mark; in the other, she holds a golden staff. Arthas recognizes her as Saint Lymirin, one of Iomedae's faithful servants. Saint Lymirin speaks briefly with the paladin, counseling him to let Hope be his guide, then touches him with her staff. In a flash of blinding light, Arthas is back in the Ineluctable Prison. He is fully healed and well-rested. Malak sleeps nearby. Arthas stands watch over his friend until he wakes. Then they discuss strategy. They have collected all five keys of the groaning gate, so they could teleport to the Herald's prison. Yet without the aid of Nor, Loki, or Elaryan, they are uncertain they can defeat whatever challenges lay there. In the end, they decide to hope for the best, and teleport anyway. The keys bring them to a vast chamber. The air stings the eyes and assails the nose, reeking of a foul mixture of oil and decay. To the east, the chamber’s bone-paved walls are supported by numerous ivory pillars, while a single statue of a goat-headed demon leers in the central alcove. A fifteen-foot-long ledge extends out over a lake of boiling tar. Two smaller ledges, each inscribed with pentagrams, protrude into the tar lake to the left and right of this central ledge, while a small beach sits on the far side. A ring of pillars surrounds a thirty-foot-wide disc of metal that floats ten feet above the surface of the tar, suspended at the same level as the floor in the eastern portion of the room. The surface of this metal disc is inscribed with thousands of glowing runes and blasphemous curves. Standing upon the disc is the corrupted Herald. He sports rotted flesh wriggling with worms, taloned hands, a demonic visage, and a gaping hole where his heart should be, dripping black fluid. He speaks in a grating voice: "My would-be saviors, sent by the child-goddess: you have arrived too late. I am the Herald of the Ivory Labyrinth and the champion of Lord Baphomet now, and you are to be the final step toward my ascension. Come. Be the meek lambs you were meant to be and bow before your executioner!" Malak and Arthas attack. They fight bravely, but without the aid of their friends, the odds are against them. The Herald wields two magical glaives, and the disc upon which he stands is warded against good creatures. Arrows fired at the Herald reverse direction to strike at the person that fired them, and anyone who meets his gaze is teleported to an extradimensional maze. Worst of all, the tar in the pit is sentient, and drags Arthas down into its boiling depths with a massive pseudopod. For a while, it appears that the heroes are outmatched. But Malak manages to escape the maze, and Arthas finally pulls free of the lake of tar. Working together, they defeat the Herald. As he falls to the ground, the Herald gasps in his final breath in Celestial, "I have betrayed the righteous path. My heart, my heart is gone, and I die a traitor." As the Herald's soul is lost forever to the Abyss, Malak wonders if returning his heart might have saved him. Unfortunately, he will never know-- for the heart is being carried by one of his missing companions. As the heroes are standing over the rapidly decaying body of the Herald, there is a loud rumbling, and Baphomet appears. The Lord of Minotaurs cries out, "I am lord of this realm, and yet you dare defy me? You do not have your strumpet protector with you this time, fools! I have crushed the bones of a thousand heroes beneath my iron hooves! And now, your bones shall join them!" Arthas reaches out his hand to Malak, ready to plane shift away, but the sorcerer instead runs toward the Demon Lord. He calls back to the paladin, "Save yourself! I will keep Baphomet busy!" Arthas is not about to abandon his friend, however. He, too, rushes into battle. He dearly wishes that the other companions had come with him to this final encounter. A second later, Baphomet has summoned a balor guard and a maw of chaos . Malak tries to engage the Demon Lord of Labyrinths, but seeing Arthas being pulled into the maw, he reconsiders. Malak flies back to the paladin, and the two heroes join hands. Arthas rings his molybdenum tuning fork, and they are returned to the Prime Material Plane. Everyone who played gains 200,000 XP. Defeating The Herald of the Ivory Labyrinth is a mythic trial.
