Mid-afternoon on day
four of jetpack training at Forward Base
Kodiac , the players are assembled
for a mission update. The storm front
that is bearing down on their target objective has intensified in magnitude and
is predicted to fluctuate somewhere between category 3 or 4 cyclonic
conditions.Section commander Grant,
assigns a number of aircraft load masters to the task of prepping the supply
and cargo drop to the players. After some awkward farewells, Lron the Karbarren pilots them to their
drop location.
In frigid conditions,
from a height of 38,000ft the players leap out of Lrons Karbarren cargo freighter and are instantly buffeted by the
leading edge of the storm. Xander is knocked off course in one direction
while Jones is caught in a cross gust and flies off in another direction. The players stream out behind the cargo vessel
tumbling in flight as they fight to establish unit grouping and cohesion.
With only two minutes
of free fall before they are required to slow their landing, the players fought
to try and re-establish unit formation.Falling through the cloud layer they caught their first view of the Karbarren Tower of the Ancients, standing
some seven stories high the tower is very imposing to behold in the waning
light of the coming dusk.
As the players fought
to ignite their jetpacks and regain flight control, Venom, Rodar and Jones
were struck by severe electric shock (lightning). So severe was the effects that Jones had all
of the electrical circuits fail and burn out in his CVR1. Ventom
was knocked senseless as the electric charge played havoc through his augmented
system with Rodar suffering similar
effects.With the ground fast
approaching and the altimeters rapidly winding down, some of the players jet
packs finally ignited with Xander,
Ferret and Jones finally able to
regain some control.
Try as he might Beta Ray could not get his jetpack to
function or start, fear gripping him in a steal embrace he began freaking
out. Ferret (who had drifter some distance away) aimed his jetpack for Beta Rays falling figure as he dove to
catch him in time. Xander tried to persuade him to calm down so that they could assist
him to no avail. With 40 seconds left of
free fall, time was certainly against the players. Jones dove
for the figure of a nonresponsive Ventom,
grabbing him in free fall and slowing his fall.In the process both players had drifted dangerously
close to the structure of the Karbarren tower! Rodars safety parachute system
auto deployed and he was dumped unceremoniously on his butt, quite unconscious but
otherwise unharmed.
Loosing himself to
fear Beta Ray continued his decent
towards his doom.No matter how he tried
his jet pack would not ignite, babbling over the Radio Comms he begged the
other players to give his love to Jackie V, confessing his love for her. Ferret
swooped in in an attempt to catch
Beta Ray, however his dive and speed were too steep and he shot past Beta Ray missing him. Xander
deftly piloted his jetpack in close and was forced to grapple with Beta Ray while attempting to have him
focus. With little under 20 seconds of
free fall left, Beta Ray was finally
able to restart his jet pack and land safely. Xander’s jet pack
malfunctioned at the last moment some 40ft above the ground and he was forced
to combat roll as he impacted the ground hard.Thankfully his training and armour both saving him from injury.
Ventom , in a rather flashy display, managed to alight atop the tower
itself!The players organised quickly after
landing, obtaining their supply crate, rappelling to the top of the tower with Ventoms assistance and sending off a
quick Burst Radio coms to Forward Base Kodiak
for a status update .
A quick scout of the
rooftop presented the players with some interesting finds, a Bronze card with a
number of holes in it (Xander translated this to read that it was Logic card Alpha ), a rough papyrus like scroll
with an inscription representing the element Earth , and a diary of a deceased Karbarren
adventurer.With harsh wind conditions
striking the tower now in earnest, the players made a hasty retreat down a
spiral staircase into the tower.
Dimly
lit by light from lightning crashes outside, the players broke out flashlights
in order to explore the tower. In the
process Beta Ray stumbled across a stone tablet with a Karbarren Script in
bronze embedded into it. Rodar believes that this is a clue, a
test placed before the players by the legendary Forge Bear.
