Stays on Loading Screen

December 01 (12 years ago)
Any game I log into, whether one I started or one I'm playing in, will not advance past the loading screen. It's been spotty for a few days, but now it's not working at all. I'm running Firefox, updated yesterday, on a Windows 7 browser. All my add-ons are up to date as of last night.

It appears to be the same problem that others were facing on the 29th.

Have you tried clearing your browser cache? If that doesn't remedy your issue, bring up your Javascript console (CTRL + SHIFT + K) while you're stuck on the loading screen. Are there any errors listed?
December 01 (12 years ago)
There are a ton of errors listed. Screenshots attached.

Okay, Spencer. Double check to make sure a cleared cache isn't the cause of the problem. If not, then please get me your full browser specs by visiting here (we don't need your IP Address). Once I have this information, I'll direct this over to the dev team.

Now it's working. Nothing I did. Just in case, I'm posting the full specs, though.

Jarek, I'll need the same details that I asked Spencer. Have you tried clearing your cache? Have you checked your java console (CTRL + ALT + I for Safari) for errors? I'll also need your browser specs sans the IP address.

@Spencer For your issue, all of those "CSS errors" can be ignored, but I did notice that Mixpanel (a new tracking tool we are using) gave a Javascript error...I just pushed out an update that I think may have fixed it. Can you try again and let me know? If it's still not working, please give me a log without the CSS errors (use the button toggle there at the top of the log window). Thanks!

Oddly, after sitting here for about 45 minutes, I have gotten into my campaign. My console log is huge now, but I have enclosed a .txt of it in case it proves helpful.

Yeah, I had this same problem last week. It's fixed now, and I have no idea how to get the Java console up on Chrome to see if there is actually a problem, and not just my internet being horrid. I have a feeling it's to do with the video chat, but I know little of this magic, so yeah; I say this because it only seems to happen when other people are connected to the campaign.

@Dylan: It looks like you've got a really large campaign. How fast is your Internet connection, typically? There's a known issue where if you have a large campaign and a slow connection, if the data for the campaign isn't downloaded quickly enough, it thinks you've timed out. I can load your campaign just fine on my connection here, which is why I'm curious what your connection is like.

My connection is horrible. A quick check of test campaign has me working, so I'll try and split my campaign up. Is there any way I can work around the timing out issue so that I don't have to restart my campaign from scratch (and how long should I wait before assuming I've timed out)?

UPDATE: I borrowed another computer to copy my campaign and separate it into an archive and a main campaign, but after deleting most pages and handouts, and paring down the remaining pages, it still won't load on my own computer. Other games work just fine, but for some reason not this one. I find it unlikely that it's still too large since I was able to run the campaign with more than the current amount of material recently.

Thanks for helping!

Hey there,
I've been getting this same loading screen freeze issue for the last week or so. It works for some games and doesn't for others. I'm guessing it's because I'm running on an older system, but I wanted to confirm. My details are below:

I have a bad connection too, usually at dennys when I play and they always choose the cheapest net they can get. I know it would be alot of work but using chain packets would be alot better, by that I mean instead of a steady stream of info pact it into packets that call for the next once its fully DL'd
December 10 (12 years ago)
We had the same problem yesterday, too. The week before no one did experience any difficulties connecting to the campain. Yesterday only one player has been able to connect without any issue. A further player atleast succeeded after about half an hour connecting time. I don't suppose it has anything to do with the size of the maps and/or campain as these did not change since last week. We had no problems on our MacBooks using Safari but the PCs with Windows 7 and a mixture of Firefox and Opera had.
To us this a matter of importance because it is difficult to get all players together on a certain time. If some players then are not able to join the game because of technical issues they will get frustrated and will not accept using Roll20.

@Dylan : It's probably old news but did you have skype running? I've found out, at least for me, that if I have skype running while trying to log in to my campaign it sits on the loading screen indefinitely. I've left it sitting for over 30 minutes once then closed down my skype and reloaded the page. It went right into my campaign then. I've repeated that multiple times also. I also faintly remember seeing something on the forums about it also but didn't see it mentioned here so I thought I would toss that info in on the off chance it might help.

December 12 (12 years ago)
I don't have skype but i'm still encountering this issue. I think, for me at least, its related to crappy connection speeds. My campaign I run is pretty huge on top of that but its only a fraction of the size it will become over the next 2 YEARS its planned to run, i am afraid of what i have to look forward too

Wardonis, you should probably treat a campaign in Roll20 like a singular adventure pack rather than an entire RPG campaign. Due to varying connection speeds, it's better to organize and plan the campaign content around what your players will do in the next two/three game sessions. You really don't want to stick with a single Roll20 campaign for a year-long game.
December 13 (12 years ago)
Also having the same problem somewhat. Everyone else can log into my campaign but me. Switched browsers [When it stopped on Chrome I tested on IE and it worked] and it worked up until I tried joining as a player. I became stuck on the loading screen once more. Cleared cache and cookies, etc and still no luck. Still sitting at loading screen.

I am the GM as well.
Chrome Specs: Version 23.0.1271.97 m

Edit: To be noted when I was on IE - the browser kept giving me a pop-up error saying that my connection has been interrupted over and over. I was still able to adjust campaign stuff until I closed my campaign window and tried to get back in.

Campaign name is also: Aberrant Arc1
I also have a fresh campaign created that is completely empty and I still cannot log in.

Here's what the Java console says for both campaigns
Aberrant Arc1:
70 app.js:3
TOUCH SUPPORTED: false app.js:3
Switch mode to select app.js:3
window resize app.js:3
tuts loaded /js/tutorial_tips.js:7

Aberrant Arc 1-2:

Just to double check, but when you're running the game in IE, Shawn, are you using the Chrome Frame addon?

Also, are you able to load as the GM? Is the load problem only when you switch over to player view?
December 13 (12 years ago)
It was using the Chrome addon. And yup, when trying to load as both the GM and player it will not work. Also, just tried with Firefox with no luck. Received this error:

The connection to ws://s-ord-nss-2.firebaseio.com/.ws?v=4&ns=roll20&s=kSiuX5dJzpCZQ6aDDBG5THzLkOxR8wNi was interrupted while the page was loading

And one of the other players is sitting next to me on the same connection and can log in fine. Also, promoted her to GM to test and she can see everything fine.

Edit: The campaign and website have been working fine for the week and a half up until yesterday. Nothing has changed on my PC or configuration in the time frame.

??????????????????? what what what?

This campaign is a planer campaign that will reach level 75+, the players have 100% freedom to travel throughout all of it. Not 1 of my players are in a the same state. I need to have all of the information for each of the planes, regions, cities within each available at all times, I wouldn't know where else to play with the group.

They've been playing since august and are currently level 12.

Wardonis:

What is meant is that if you have a very large campaign loaded all into a single Roll20 campaign then that campaign's file size can be a problem. After a certain point it becomes so large that people with connection speed issues can time out before getting into the campaign. The solution for this is to split your campaign up into smaller pieces.

Example: If you have 100 maps in Campaign Holy Moly! it would improve performance if you split the campaign into:
20 maps for Campaign Holy Moly! part1
20maps for Campaign Holy Moly! part2
20maps for Campaign Holy Moly! part3
etc...

Instead of having to load a 100map campaign your players will only have to load a 20map section of the campaign.

Summary: Breaking a campaign up into more manageable pieces may help with loading the game. I hope this explains it adequately.

Alright. I appreciate all the help guys. I did manage to log into my blank campaign. Completely at random just to see. However my main campaign is still not accessible on MY pc here. I'll keep trying and waiting patiently. Thanks again guys.

EDIT: Ok, so at complete random I was able to just log into my main campaign.
Here is the console on the page.

Edit-Edit: So as a test, I left the page and came back. After about three minutes it worked again. I have no idea why. Also attached a screen of the connection interruption message that keeps popping up. None of these errors have happened prior to yesterday.

Hey Shawn,

I have an idea. After you try to join your Campaign (and you're at the loading screen), your URL bar should say you're at:

http://app.roll20.net/editor/

Can you then add the following on the end so it looks like this?

http://app.roll20.net/editor/?usessl=true

(then press enter)

It should reload. Let me know if that fixes it for you.

is there a way to split it? i wouldn't mind separating it into the 7 planes so having 7 campaigns but I have a complete bestiary, 90+ NPCs and handouts and nearly 50 maps all told, and its just the beginning of the game relativity. Is there a way to copy stuff to other campaigns and keep things like player tokens updated?

For stuff like this would so much better in my opinion if anything thats archived is saved to the GMs roll20 online account and not into the game directly, once the campaigns running they can import/export to the map from their account just by archiving/unarchiving and even port into a separate campaign like that.

Sure is, Wardonis. Go to your campaign's Details Page (click on "View Details" from your campaigns list). On the left side, underneath the campaign icon image, there's an option called "Copy/Extend Campaign." You can toggle what features you want carried over to the new copy. Once you have a couple duplicates of your master campaign, start cutting away pages from the clones so you have one bunch of related pages in one campaign, another related bunch of pages in another campaign and so on.

The only thing that you and your players will need to maintain/update at the beginning of a campaign switch is your NPC/PC's stats.
