Interest Check - One on one sessions for new players. D&D 5E

So when my partner first started playing D&D I ran a short little adventure for her to learn the basic mechanics of the system and and Roll20 before we joined a group and a game proper. I've seen quite a few posts in the lfg area that are from people with no experience of tabletop or roll20. So I am considering offering to run a very basic game for one person at a time to help them understand the rules and the site. The game would be personalized to the person and what they wanted from a game. More combat/roleplay or to their character so they can learn the skills. If they didn't have a character then I would be happy to go through character creation in either a separate or the same session. I'm still thinking out the finer details and the date and time would be arranged between me and the player. I just think this might help some of those who are a little shy or want to get to know the game without the pressure of a full group and game going on.
Hey, I'm just posting a supportive bump. I think that one on one, or even one on two-three are great ideas to help acclimate new players.
I'd definitely be interested in something like this. I'm new to tabletop RPGs in general, and I learn better by doing more so than just reading the rules. So a small "tutorial" campaign would really help me learn the basics.
Also interested in this. I've DM'd 5e tabletop from the beginning. However I have very little experience with roll20. I was recently asked to host a game, but the thought is daunting as I've not used it before outside of the tutorial and a few hours messing around with my brother on roll20. An intro session would be fantastic.
Hi there!  I'm new to 5e and I'd love to learn how everything works! Especially character creation and rolls and everything! PM for more info etc
I have had a similar idea for a couple of workshops that would walk players through character creation and the basics of D&D5E mechanics and Roll20. This way, they can be better prepared to join games and campaigns, and there might be less of a learning curve once they are playing in a live game. Of course, I have debated whether the workshops would be interesting and worthwhile for players or whether they would prefer to actually learn while playing a session. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages. After all, learning while playing is perhaps more fun, but someone who is completely new to tabletop RPGs and/or Roll20 might find it easier or more comfortable to learn some basics before jumping into the fray. Any thoughts?
i would suggest a 1-2 hour plot that has role play and combat mechanics both. that way you can teach communication and turns as well as the crunch for combat. if there is a lot of content, then breaking into multiple workshops to cover key topics would be good. build in time for a Q&A at the end, etc.
I think it is an excellent idea. I have no experience with D&D and online tabletops, but I really want to learn to play. However, finding people willing to teach such a noob is so hard for me. I hope that I will be able to play. PM me more information and etc.
Thanks to everyone who has posted support and interest so far. I will pm those who might want a session when I get home from work. @Greg I actually joined something similar when I started playing on Roll20. The guys doing the workshop were trying to do it on quite a big scale so there was five or six of us in the group that I joined. I found that even then there was a big disparity between what some players knew and others didn't and with how quickly some of us picked things up. The result was the session was a little tedious, and whilst useful, I feel like a smaller, more concentrated session would have been more helpful. The players I want to help are the ones with 0 experience who find it hard to get into a group that will teach them. If I can give them at least some basic knowledge then they are in a much better position to get their first game going. @HEEGZ That's about what I had in mind. A little time to cover the general ideas of the game and the character they are playing. An hour or two of exploring a dungeon, looking at combat, stealth, how to approach situations and using their abilities, a little bit of roleplay and finally, some time at the end to ask questions or go over anything specific that came up in the game.
Little update, I've messaged everyone who expressed interest in being in a session and I will hopefully be running some soon. If they go well then I will try and keep some time open for any new people who want a little help.
