My suggestion is a simple one, but it would be nice if there was the functionality to crop map/background images to make it fit with the grid better, or to remove aspects that aren't required.
Padding detection around the image would be related (some images found seem to have extreme amounts of white padding around them), but I have no idea how this could be implemented in web tools.
Embedding an image editor is not that much work. All you need is a URL for the embedded editor to POST the new image to.
