For a while now there has been a big question about how to ask questions.  I know this sounds meta, but stick with me; it's important.  In a guild this big, which fluctuates between 60 and a 120 players or more, we have to have resources so that we can direct people to them for the bulk of the common questions / rules / etc.  This isn't a normal home game were we can sit the players down, hammer out all the basics and then just respond to questions individually without any issues. The vast majority of beginner questions (rules, character creation, logistics) can be answered by reading the Basic Rules thread , the New Character Checklist , and the Rules on Items thread , as well as the Discord #welcome and #upcoming-sessions channels (scroll all the way up!). Please read through these thoroughly before asking a lot of questions. One of the mottos of the Guild is "Reading OP."  You are allowed and encouraged to ask questions or request clarification, but please put in the effort first so our DMs can spend less time answering basic questions and more time running games. As such, for new players and old, I'm going to provide a quick primer for what we mean when we say "Ask Good questions". Great question: Ok, so in the Basic Rules document it says "when a DM hands out a weapon it is a generic weapon of that type" does that also count for items I buy myself or do I have to leave it as it is because the DM didn't give it to me as part of treasure? Answer: All the items, from the DM or bought from a vendor / from other guild members are generic. This question quotes a specific thing in a specific document so we know the player is reading the resources and still has questions. Good question: So do Superior Will and Improved Defenses stack? Answer: No, bonuses of the same type do not stack. This question is not answered in one of the readily available documents.  You might be able to get it on your own (as it is in the PHB about typed bonuses) but its easy to overlook.  This question is not a problem and the DMs will happily answer them.  We may include a link for clarification, but generally we will just answer. Meh Question: I can't seem to find the list of expertise feats.  Am I blind or do I have to look them up somewhere? Answer: <Link to the New Character Checklist > Check out Step 8 of the checklist.  Just click the 'free expertise link'. This question is only 'meh' cause you are asking a question that is directly answered on the Basic Rules/Checklist, but you are not asking us to simply feed you the information.  Please don't take personal offense if we link you to one of our threads or videos. Those resources exist so that the DMs can save their fingers for running games and don't have to repeatedly type out answers to same frequently-asked questions for new players year after year.  Your question is valid and the answer both important and readily available.  That's a good thing! Bad Question: Will someone do my defenses for me?  I'm used to saves in other editions and I don't get these different defenses things in 4e. Answer: No.  We will not do it for you.  How to calculate your defenses can be found in the PHB.  We need you to learn to do things for yourself.  If you try and then struggle we will be happy to correct you. This question is a bad question primarily because you are not taking initiative and doing things for yourself.  In the basic rules we say that we expect you to try to learn some of the basics ahead of time and we will help you along.  With the size and longevity of this campaign, we just can't take the time to spoon-feed you information. That saved time for DMs means more games run for the Guild! Bad Question: Well <Insert DM's name> said I could have the item for free cause my background was cool. Answer: Yeah, no.  Cheating will get you removed.  Similar things like "But he said...", "But she said...", "I'm not getting enough help so I can't be blamed" will not be tolerated.  Take ownership of your successes and failures.  We aren't going to mock you for getting things wrong; we are going to mock you if you cheat or blame others for your mistakes.  The DMs here have a pretty strong community of themselves and if a DM tells a player something that is wrong we will mock them in DM chat if they refuse to admit their mistake. I'll likely add more good and bad questions as we go.  In general as long as you seem to be trying to figure stuff out and not ignoring advice, we are very helpful.  If you look like you are sitting back and waiting for us to hold your hand through it... we really just can't do that and retain sanity.  There are just too many of you all and too much time spent on writing the resources for us to be ok with everyone ignoring them.
