Visiting an alchemist

1466463828

Edited 1466482863
On a cool, misty morning the front door of the Tipsy Mermaid flies open. In stride a well built woman with flowing golden hair in leather armour tailed by a tall dark elf in similar gear. Both have two satchels on them which they appear to be guarding to the utmost. Many would already be familiar with Tannyll Rotar, the owner of a recently opened a potion shop not too far from the Mermaid. She has come looking for any others interested to come visit Master Everade, an alchemist in the upper city. She points out that what she is carrying is too valuable to be let taken by mere street thugs and wouldn't mind taking a couple of extra hands alongside Sabaufein. "An excellent opportunity for any interested in the creation of magical items" she calls it. To Adolfo she mentions of her joining the Horses but also remarks with a sly smile: "Don't think you got rid me that easily. I'm sure many more adventures with this company are ahead of me." Date on Campaign Calendar: 34th of Havis 986

Since nobody else seems interested Tannyll would go with just Sabaufein escorting her. With her trade license she easily gets past the upper city gate guards and the companions are soon enough searching for Master Everade's abode. After not so long they spot a sign which they cannot mistake for anything else and make their way to the alchemist's house.

Master Everade's shop proves to be a cluttered emporium full of curios, bric-abrac and stuffed animals. The man himself is a thin fellow dressed in costly but faded robes. He affects a slightly distracted air as Tannyll enters. What can I do for you? Oh; it's you! he says accusingly. You're that meddler from low town. Come to try and sell me your snake oil I suppose!
Marokin would have joined Tannyll in visiting Master Everade's shop. He hasn't come around to do so yet and it always interested to learn about new curiosities. Also it is an easy opportunity to stroll in the upper city and catch up on latest rumours. When they enter the shop he stays a bit back to just observe the interaction of the two.
To Tannyll such accusations are commonplace and so she pays them no heed. "No good sir, what I have come to you with is of actual value." She makes her way to the counter and places some of the flasks she has with her on it. Noting the man's curious look she explains, nodding to Sabaufein's direction. "My friend here managed to acquire a number of fascinating potions on his last venture to, Khulican was it? In any case, he then brought them to me for examination. Unfortunately my abilities in the arts aren't yet sophisticated enough to let me deduce the composition of the mixtures." She pauses for a second seeing if Sabaufein has anything to add but only silence and and narrow stares ensue after which she turns back to the alchemist.

Hmm; potions you say! Now why didn't you say so immediately? That puts a different complextion on things. Bring them over. I warn you though, that determining the composition of an unknown elixir is a very difficult proposition. Are you sure you wouldn't just rather sell them to me? I mean we might ruin them; indeed there is an excellent chance of that. Even the most skilled Alchemists deduce the exact ingredients and procedure for making a potion from a sample of the brew perhaps once or twice in a lifetime. It is a truly arduous undertaking..................
While listening to all of that Marokin is strolling through the shop and looking at the different pieces of bric-abrac, seeing of any of them have a magical signature or appear to him valuable at all. He would also glance a bit at the potions to see if they seem to be tied to a certain school of magic or not. He then, without looking over, says: "Well you seem to have here two Alchemists, and not only one, I am sure when working together your chances will be higher, won't they?"
"I doubt my efforts in the matter will be more effectual than that of an apprentice. Which I wouldn't mind of course as I'm looking to hone my skills." Tannyll looks curiously at the uninvited tiefling but decides to leave him alone for now. The topic of their conversation isn't a great secret. "Indeed some payment would interest us, or mostly Sabaufein as he was the one who risked his life in the mission which yielded the items. Before a price has been agreed upon I don't believe we can begin any sort of action toward analyzing the potions. Might you select some of them to buy and others for further study so both of us can be compliant with the deal?" She slides a piece of paper to Master Everade on which she has written the identified names of the potions. 1 Potion of Water Breathing 1 Potion of Fire Resistance 1 Potion of Hill Giant Strength 1 Potion of Animal Friendship 1 Potion of Oil of Slipperiness 4 Keoghtom's ointment

"Ah most wonderful." She quickly sorts the vials into two sets, one to sell and the others for examination. "Here. Potions of strength and slipperiness as well as two ointments for study, the rest we'll sell for a total of 1100 gold. A satisfactory deal?" She points the question more to Sabaufein than to Master Everade. A brief second later he responds with "Ye that deal will do. But aren't you forgetting something?" Tannyll appears a bit flustered as she almost forgot to ask the most important question. "Indeed. I, I was getting to that... Master Everade, could you take me as an apprentice? Just for a while. A month or two would suffice."

A month or two; what and have you set up as my rival? I think not! I have already heard tales of folk sneaking down to see you in your Low City shop. You must think me mad Mistress Tannyll...............

"This much I suspected. Sigh, how about at least letting me study the potions with you until we reach a conclusion on them."

"Wonderful. Now all that is left is for him to receive his payment and we can get on our way." Again she nods her head towards Sabaufein.  "I shall be back before dusk for I'm eager to begin our project. But before we leave I'm curious to know what sort of business mister Marokin has here." Tannyll turns to look at the tiefling whose gaze seems to be fixated on Master Everade's many wares.

Marokin runs his eyes over many strange and even alien looking pieces of sculpture, odd military flags, and other bric-a-brac. Telll-tale holes in some of the items suggests the missing presence of gems that have been deliberately removed, as do narrow slots that also hint at removal. Looking across at Everade, Marokin senses the hint of a smile tugging at the corner of the man's lips and guesses that the wily old alchemist has kept any choice items locked away. None of what he can see seems magical, and yet there are lingering auras on some things that suggest that at least some of them once possessed dweomer. OOC Roll me History PK
Marokin looks a bit confused at Tanyll: "Oh I went with you up here because I always am interested in the upper city and seeing it offerings, and the word of Master Everade's wonders has long tempted me for a visit. Several of Master Everade's sculptures are Sithi in origin and there are also some Ashanni pieces.
The campaign calendar has advanced exactly one month. What became of our studies on the potions if anything?
" Do you have any of these sculptures whole? " Marokin says from his corner looking and pointing at one of the Sithi artefacts and waiting for a reply of the trifler. "There seem to be parts missing and we all know that art that is incomplete is worth much less. On the other hand these seem to be quite rare... Maybe we can discuss the specifics of these objects in a more private environment?"

@ Tannyll; you spend the next month working on these potions (note that you may not do anyting else during this time). Are you proficient with an Alchemists Kit? If not gain the proficiency and these investigations take 2months of game time. Then roll me 4 Alchemists Kit checks with advantage.

@Marokin Ah Sir! I can see you are educated in finer arts than most. I am holding an auction of rare objects d'art if you wish an invitation? I warn you that you must show me that you have at least 500 gp in funds in order to attend. If not, then perhaps some other time?
Indeed she does not yet have it so two months it is. Rolls: 19, 12, 17, 11

The oil of slipperiness and one Keogham's oil are spoiled without finding anything out. You learn 1 ingredient of the potion of strength and the other Keogham's oil and may continue working on them to discover all their secrets. Roll me two more checks with advantage.
I do think the road ends here... Rolls: 13 & 7

Question Niko; you ARE adding your proficiency bonus to these rolls (since you are now proficient in the Alchemists Kit)? Otherwise; back luck because the last two are both spoiled without learning anything more.

Much much later after these events happened, Malagven comes to Master Everade asking if he'd be interested in buying two basilisk eyes. He has heard they have alchemical properties. If he would be interested, Malagven would attempt to rise the price just a bit. "They are really rare you know. One hardly ever goes out there hunting basilisks."

I will give you 100 gp a piece and not a penny more says the old miser.
I accept...
Wait, Niko, you didn't get either of the basilisk eyes! One went to the dwarf, and the other to the ranger.

Have the gold if you want :P I was the one wise enough to scavenge them...
Huh, I thought that was the dwarf. If you came up with the idea, then never mind,I guess he just said he wanted one. :P Sorry!
