I am playing a Rogue (Raven) and wanted to go down the Arcane Trickster route; but have just read the class and the spell selection is TERRIBLE and totally against type. I am therefore re-writing the spell list for this class. Note that if you want to play the original Arcane Trickster then be my guest but players are also free to use my version. I will call this the Waysider list. If you want to know what I am talking about, Arcane Tricksters have to choose three spells from the enchantment and illusion schools at first level. This sounds great, until you realise that the spells in these schools are wholly inappropriate for someone who will be scouting ahead and looking for traps. Here are the current choices: Charm Person Color Spray (and attack spell that blinds people)? Disguise Self Silent Image Sleep (an attack spell)? Tasha's Hideous Laughter (another attack spell)? Here are my choices: Alarm Charm Person Detect Magic Disguise Self Longstrider Feather Fall Jump Will post higher levels spells as they are needed but I think that the class that is supposed to deal with arcane traps should at least be able to detect them. I also feel that the Rogue should be an arcane utility class, not a battlemage.
Does that mean I could swap my level 1 spells for some of these as well? I would say having detect magic is way more useful than disguise self

Yep; of course Jim!
I don't disagree with rewriting the class bt was assuming it to be a thief that also uses magic to leave foes bamboozled while running off w their belongings. From my feeling what you think as waystrider is more covered in the ranger department

PK; partly true. That is exactly what Waysiders once were. But in the present day of Maladon and the Empire, that but missing a big part of them. Ordinary Waysiders are now like a cross between rural Rogues and Rangers; they are vagabonds who must often steal to survive because of their calling and begat their sons on widows and married women. This is why they are oftne revilled; because common folk do not know the dangers they face. Of course the noble leaders are more like a Paladin/Ranger cross even now, but Raven is not one of those.
