yes, The point is to build a strong house while keeping peace with the players. The group will consistently be sent out to accomplish tasks for the liege lord. So it will have more possibilities for intrigue and warfare which are underused in most games. Lastly as a GM i find it easier this way because the group doesn't spend the entire sessions just trying to undermined each other or arguing about how to build the house.
Good players know they're in the same game together and doesn't try to undermine one another no matter what. I just remember last time I played or GM'd asoiaf, I just made an NPC the head of the house with the rest sons, daughters, various positions within the house etc and told everyone to play together as a group, aka, don't be the boring, brooding silent back stabbing type in the corner : p Sadly, I don't like the idea of everyone having their own house, as that will exactly make people try to gain advantage over others and not let everyone have a say in social interactions because they'll try to get the best out of it - that's just my 2 cents at least. Best of luck with the campaign though mate!
Scheming, plotting, backstabbing and betrayal? In Westeros ? I can't imagine why anybody would think that's appropriate.
I want people to have that opportunity but I don't want it to be the centerpiece.

Certainly appropriate, but gets awfully boring if every player is only out for backstabbing one another, isn't it? That's why you play together and do it against NPC's, otherwise you might as well play solo campaigns, silly.
I'd like to chime in that, the two groups I was able to get into did not follow the mentaility of trying to backstab everyone. While it certainly fits the theme, players know how detremental it would be to do so (unless it was explicitly writen in the description that players are allowed/expected), but that's my limited experience with the system.
Hey I know of a few players that would be willingly to play this if you are looking for players
