Beginner Issues with making Custom Maps and Resizing

Dear Community,

I have recently started making a new campaign to play with friends. We play D&D.
The Idea of this campaing is that I am going to make it completely custom.
I am drawing my Bosses and other npc's involved (tokens) and Maps myself.
I am compiling a collection of pics and screenshots from cool areas in other games and editing them into my custom map.
The issue is that when I upload My Map, IT DOES show, but it shows very small like a little picture.
When I stretch it (resize with mouse cursor on board) the quality of the Image becomes very bad! Missing pixels etc... Just blurry and Ugly!
I am aware with the 5mb limit and the formats allowed, so my question is:
How can I upload and Use my Maps on big size without loosing quality of picture?
Here is an example of my First map in my First Campaign. (hope U can open it and check it out and note what I mean with the bad quality upon stretching)( This picture originally is about the same size so I don't understand why the stretch gives it such a bad effect)
https://app.roll20.net/join/225062/rPYOWg
Next, I want to eventually exand this same map.
If u have visited my link and seen the background map thats currently there, I am planning to draw a longer road for example or a more open combat area before that road ( U name it, just creative editing)
Will this be possible? And how should I approach this?
Hopefully this isn't too broad of a question! Thank you in advanced for your attention and help!
Cheers to a great community!

Your link goes to the campaign discussion page. I can't see what you mean.

Some questions though,

  • What are the dimensions of your original image in pixels?
  • What type of file is the image(gif, jpg, png, pdf...)?
  • What are are your page settings within roll20 (unit size, grid size, etc)?

Hi! thank you for joining my campaing and trying to help! Much appreciated!
Wwhat I mean for you to see is the difference in quality.. look at the pixels and the blurry-nes..
Here is a link form the original so u see: https://www.google.nl/search?q=World+of+Warcraft+Outlands+Scenery&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=bIFVUpqvBNOT0AWGoYHoBg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1304&bih=683&dpr=1#es_sm=93&q=World+of+Warcraft+Outlands+hellfire+Penninsula+pics&tbm=isch&facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=Wea9ycx9L4IG0M%3A%3Bx9_xL_JpFkfT3M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fstatic.gamesradar.com%252Fimages%252Fmb%252F%252FGamesRadar%252Fus%252FGames%252FW%252FWorld%252520of%252520Warcraft%252520The%252520Burning%252520Crusade%252FBulk%252520Viewers%252FPC%252F2006-05-11%252FRemnants%252520of%252520Alliance%252520vs%252520Horde%252520Battle%252520in%252520Hellfire%252520Peninsula--screenshot_large.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.gamesradar.com%252Fe3-06-wow-the-burning-crusade%252F%3B603%3B402

My image as saved: 44.2KB .jpg, 603 x 402, width: 603 pixels Height: 402 pixels
Page settings roll20: Page size: 25 units by 25 units, Width by heigth: 1 unit = 70 pixels, Scale: 1 unit = 5 feet

I replied only now cuz i was @ work :)
Please also note that I am a beginner and this is my first campaign I am making. I am not the smartest guy So it might be logical that this effect occurs when stretching the image, but maybe U can help me and explain how i can approach this issue to still have a large but nice and clear image as background!
Cheers

Generally the larger the image starting out the better the quality. Which image on the search strip you were going to use and need help with?

If your image is 603x402 then the largest you should make it in Roll20 would be 8.6squares by 5.7squares.

I suggest making a much larger image if you want it to be larger than 8x5. Right now your image is 21x14 which is WAY too big for the original size. You will get a lot of pixelation at that size.

When you upload the map ensure you have selected the background layer! Otherwise it will cram it into one square. For my maps rather than dealing with a huge file in a graphics program I just uploaded a bunch of map tiles I could arrange on the grid. They look sharp and Roll20 has a good interface for tiles like this. The tiles to have to be square and fit together nicely. (Think Carcassone if you ever played that.)

Dustin, what size of tiles (on the grid) are you using?

Hi all! Thank you for the replies!
I will try this out then! Going to try resize the image first, save it, then upload it big!
@ Metroknight, I am drawing the images myself and using screenshots from others games etc.(just being creative) If u are asking which image in My ArtGallery I am using its the only one that is there that looks like a map :P It has a road and is tagged "entering something something".
@ Dustin A, uploading a bunch of map tiles also sounds very clever! I think I will alos try this out for parts of maps where I want to have a lot of detail for example.
Thank you all again very much! Cheers
