Map Alignment issues after follow Alignment Guide

September 14 (8 years ago)
Hello R20 , Airome here with an alignment problem. I have been using map images on R20 for almost a year now and usually have no problems. Align to Grid plus fine tuning always works.

Now I cant seem to figure out this particular issue no matter what I do... I followed the guide and got the middle of my map perfectly aligned. The farther down you go however the more the horizontal lines dont match. The farther right you go the more the verticle lines dont match. I have tried everything in the guide to help but have nothing. It fixes it it one part but not another.

Observe.

Perfect here.

Very bottom of the map.

Far right of the map.

What am I missing?

I'd be willing to bet that if you load that image up in a graphic editor, you'd find that the tiles are not perfectly spaced.  There are many "for print" images that have imperfect grids which simply will not line up.  You're only options end up being "live with the disparity" (either with the Roll20 grids visible or by setting their color transparent) or going "gridless" from the Roll20 side and just placing tokens without the snap on the image's grid. You can still use <space> to get a measurement of how far the token is moving and such, and that won't be so far off on the faulty grid.

I always start at one side, alt+click to stretch the map without it snapping, reset the edge alignment, and repeat. A note, a lot of maps have a 4px grid line, while roll20 uses a 1px line. The larger the map, the more noticeable this is

While I was writing this it dawned on me that maybe I had not yet tried alt stretching the map and that maybe it is snapping the edges to the grid. So if I (presumably) alt align the edges of the map to fix the top and bottom...problem solved.

I wont be able to test this until later tonight but I will post feedback once I have. Thank you.

I have used that exact same map and it was a pain to fit to the grid lol... it took a lot of alt-stretching and lining up to get right but it can just about be done I promise. The dimensions i ended up with were 4586 x 4040 and then a little alt-moving to get it just right (snapped to grid those dimensions won't work at all).

Hope you get it right, it's a fun map.

For info, the issue comes from the grid lines being quite thick, anymore more than a pixel ends up throwing the whole thing out over a number of squares, my dimensions will look ok everywhere but none of it will be perfect... good luck!

I have both level 1 and 2 of this map set and they look AMAZING. I couldn't NOT use it! Thanks for the dimensions. Those should help. A very fun map with a variety of themes that could be attached. Demon/Devil invasion is mine.

This worked perfectly.  I was ALMOST there with what I had originally, I was surprised.  I thought I would have to realign all my creature tokens and such but they all only needed very minor alterations.  Thank you all.

DM Cody has a great set of videos out. I suggest looking at this one for tips on aligning grids. If this doesn't work, you're probably not dealing with a symetrical grid.
