As most people on here probably know, Riot's League of Legends is the most popular video game in the world, with currently more than 100 Million active players (Not including smurf accounts). A while ago I had an idea that maybe one could use the world and lore of Runeterra to make a pathfinder game. The lore has: - A simple and easy to understand setting with your typical lawful good nation (Demacia), and typically evil nazi nation (Noxus), an psuedo asian territory (Ionia), a chaotic pirate territory (Bildgewater), a Chaotic Good nation dedicated for technology (Piltover), the antithesis of said technology nation, using chemical and bio warfare (Zaun), an arabic theme fallen empire filled with archaeological dungeons and gods (Shurmia), A mountain filled with spartan and roman like culture and warriors (Mount Targon), an arctic territory filled with savage tribes (Freljord), a hell on earth, gothic horror themed islands where evil creatures dwell (Shadow Isles), another dimension filled with kaiju and terrifying monsters (Void) and even a city filled with a race of furry little creatures (Bandal City) - A lore that has much empty plot. Essentially from a video game standpoint, having good guys and bad guys with no victor is a smart idea. If Demacia wins, then the bad guys loose a bit of their appeal. In the lore of League of Legends, you have the endless conflict between Demacia and Noxus, the Ionian invasion, The rise of Shurima, the Queen of the Freljord conflict, the battle between Piltover and Zaun, the return of the Ruined King, MOTHERFUCKING PIRATES, and even an invasion of giant monsters. - A comfortable blend of fantasy and technology. Runeterra has knights, mages, ninjas, laser guns and whatever the fuck Aurelian Sol is. If a player wants to make a heimerdinger like character it can happen, if a player wants to make a ryze like character, it can happen. If a player wants to tank all of the magic and technology damage like garen, he can. Pathfinder does a decent job creating a system that balances these diverse combat styles (We are not talking about summoner) - The removal of the Institute of war and the "League of Legends" from the actual lore. I forget when it happened but Riot realized that their lore was boring since ALL conflict was settled in team arena combat. This means that there are no "heroes" to save Runeterra from whatever terror the GM wishes to dish out. Blank settings like this are great for table top rpgs because the players can do whatever they want and have that feeling of importance. The cons: - Ideally you are only looking at two playable races, Human and Gnome(Yordle). A campaign of all humans can be quite bland but with enough creativity, one could say, make the other base races citizens of different territories. Example, a dwarf could be a human from the freljord and a half orc could be a human from Noxus. Part of these games are the build paths. Some people want to have that orc viciousness but it would go against the lore of Runeterra. However an easy system like this creates that diversity. - The preexisting npcs. Obviously, a game like this would require a new cast to the League of Legends. However there are already characters like Garen, Ryze and Yasuo, who have protagonist like qualities in the lore. Garen is the honorable knight that wishes to defeat Noxus and his rival Darius, Ryze seeks to save Runeterra from the Void infestation and Political struggles, and Yasuo is your typical animu protagonist and to top it all off, they gave him Taliyah, a little shuriman girl who was somehow mentored (that story is kinda all over the place). So the GM would need to think of a way to keep these characters because to the players, these npcs are the world but to still have that "The players must save the world" I mean with the bad guys, obviously Cho Gath and Mordekaiser would be a boss somewhere down the road. However the most recent adventure path modules released from paizo has had interesting systems involving npcs and player relations so it is very possible to make this work. - NO ACTUAL SUMMONERS AND INSTITUTE OF WAR IN THE LORE. We know league from the MOBA point and how team comps and getting ahead decides victory. It would be strange to think of Runeterra as a table top setting. So it can be done but I do not know if I would want to be a GM in this as I would want to experience a GM who is skilled in world building and bringing a world to life using the theater of the mind. Leave a comment on opinions, let me know if you are interested and remove Fizz from the game.
