LF 4 Players, 3.5e, Faerun (FR) Setting

I've run a good number of long and short term adventures through Faerun (sadly, all of which have ended over time), but here I am attempting to run a brand new one. From the Great Glacier to Chult, Waterdeep to Mulhorand, I've run games for players through most of the Forgotten Realms at one time or another. Here I hope to have another long term game where I take some folks on a journey and make them paranoid about what lurks in the next room. ( Note : I will be gone for a day or two after posting this due to familial issues, but consider this a post to gauge interest. Don't take a lack of response during that period as a lack of interest on my part.) Technical Points for the Game System Books that are useful to have/know: 3.5e Player's Guide and 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (There is no 3.5e for that book). I'll be using the Base 3.5e ( available in a convenient SRD ) for this particular game, as I find it's always good to start in a simple manner when folks are just starting to game together. It allows me to tell what kind of players and RPers you are. Skills, feats and all that will be limited to what's available in the Player's Handbook. Level 3 start with base classes. Races are selectable from the FR Campaign Setting (If you do not have access to the book, these can be explained.) I roll ability scores myself for the PCs, with my own dice, as a method of ensuring no fudging. (Don't worry, my dice seem to like my players more than me.) Having experience in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting is useful, but not required. I can teach. New people to D&D 3.5e are fine, I'm perfectly well and good to explain and help with things. We'll use an OOC room so as not to clutter the main Roll20 log with OOC text. Whether that is IRC, Skype, etc, is up for discussion. Style The game will be a mixture of many types of play, likely, as I tend not to limit myself to the basics. Amounts of social, combat, investigation and the like will vary. Good aligned campaign. To be honest, if you don't like RPing and are in to bash things for gold, this probably isn't the game for you. Not every monster is going to shoot gold everywhere when it dies and rewards tend to come when they logically should. Timeframe Game Time: I am looking to create an early Sunday game. I am in MST, so I would be fine with a 11 am/noon MST game start. This would be 10 am/11 am PST and 1 pm/2 pm EST. GMT people are fine, but note that it would be around 7 hours ahead. This will be an attempt at a long term, weekly game. I cannot stress enough: if you cannot make the time, please do NOT sign up for the game. Just not showing is rather annoying and insulting to your fellow players who did show up. Don't expect to be accepted back in if you just vanish. You can call me Hypnos or Geoff, either way is good. I'm just about 32 years old, have been playing tabletop since I was 10 and DMing since I was 15. I've frequented D&D since 1e and have gamed in enough systems that I'm sure I've forgotten some of them by now. D&D 3.5 is a definite preference for me, as is Forgotten Realms (not 4e FR though). If there's anything I missed or if you have questions, feel free to post here or send a private message. Thanks and have a pleasant day! AMENDMENT : By Base D&D 3.5e, as is mentioned above, I literally mean just the information that is available in the 3.5e Player's Handbook and in the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. My apologies for the lack of clarity.
I'd love to play in a 3.5 Faerun game. I just wish I could play a Fey'ri as they are my favorite race. Curse that +2 LA!
I've never played a Faerun game, and I'm new to roll20, but other than that I am quite interested!
I'm also new to roll20 and 3.5 as it were, though I've played Pathfinder so I know a fair bit about the system through osmosis. I have a slight familiarity with Faerun through the 4e version though I understand it's pretty different. I don't know whether that'd be a big problem but I'd be willing to look up relevant 3e info on it. If you're still looking for players I'd be available from 10-5PM PST on Sundays.
I've been looking for a Sunday D&D 3.5 game, the time fits perfect. It would be awesome to learn about Faerun as we go since I'm not familiar.
im down lets do it
I'd love to join. I'm actually US Central but I'm fine with the time line. I'm usually awake at the time this game would be going on anyway. Fearun is actually the setting I'm most familiar with if for no other reason than I've read many of the novels in the setting.
I'm gonna shoot straight with you. I'm not very experienced with table top games. Hell I haven't even played 3.5. But I love role playing and partaking in adventures of EPIC proportions. I am also very reliable. If you say you need me there at 10am PDT then I will be there. Availability - Anytime on weekends Timezone - Pacific Time dedication available - I truly have nothing better to do. Adventurer type - Comic relief/Can seriously mess things up or make things awesome. (Depends on the day usually.)
and are we talking this sunday or next?
*Removed*
He said that he would be busy for the next two days or so so I'm sure at the earliest it would start next week.
Hey Hypnos! I'd definitely be interesting in joining y'all. I'm CST and Sundays are always free. I'm new to Roll20 but an old hat at D&D (been playing 30+ years now, since AD&D). I'm also a 3.5e-preferred and have some experience with FR (I played Living City through the RPGA back in the day, though that was mostly hack-n-slash with little ongoing plot that made sense). I wrote a bunch for 3.5e LG after that, so am not truly that familiar with the setting. I do have the FR Campaign setting from 3e, though, so I guess I'll start reading up on world history in hopes of joining y'all. I'm intrigued by the "Core PHB" setting and look forward to filing any class slot the party would need, having decent experience with most of the common classes. Until the Red Wizards of Thay say otherwise-- I'm in! ;-)
It would be cool to have players with prestige combos, like a Wizard of Thay with a Thayan Knight. Or something like that.
I would be interested, i am EST, and defensively free on Sunday, i have extensive 3.5 experience.
Wow, I had hoped for a little bit of a response, but this was well beyond what I assumed I'd get. *chuckles* Thanks for the interest in the game so far! I hadn't expected that a Base 3.5e game in Faerun would be overly popular, but nine responses is pretty good, I'd say. Sadly, this also means I'll have to pick and choose who to bring in, because while I might be able to improve the number to six players, that still leaves a few who won't be able to get in. A nine player game would be rather brutal all around. It makes me wish I had time for a second game, but, sadly, I do not in the near future. As well, apologies for the lateness of my return. I was back yesterday afternoon and that turned into a hospital visit due to an unforeseen eye issue that has hopefully settled. Anyways, I have a few questions for those gathered here in the thread, so please feel free to answer if you apply to said question: 1: How many of you are already playing in a previous game here at Roll20? It's good to get a gauge of who knows the system quite well. 2: Those of you who said you are not well versed in 3.5e, how well versed ARE you? Are we starting from scratch, do you know how to make a sheet, etc? I'm good with all levels of experience, but I'm just looking to get a gauge here as well. 3: What kind of character would you want to play? Obviously we need to ensure that we aren't four to six Bards running around at this point. heh 4: How familiar are all of you with IRC? If many of you are, then I'd be fine with creating a room for the group to use OOCly. If not, we'll use something more mainstream, like Skype. As well, I'm currently looking for an online repository for character sheets. Myth-Weavers is quite good, but appears that you need an account there if you want to see people's sheets. Looking into other options now. I look forward to your replies and thanks again for the interest! I will be much more active in getting the game going now that I am back. (Edited in another question.)
1. Been using Roll20 for I think half a year or more. 2. 3.5 is the system I've been using since 2000, so I'm quite experienced with it. 3. I'd likely play a spellcaster but I would rather wait and see what everyone else wants to play and then make a character that fills the gaps. That's what I usually do. Though I prefer druids over clerics, and rangers over fighters. No preference between sorcerer and wizard. 4. I've only used one irc channel I don't suppose it would be too difficult to join another group/room with it.
35, playing since i was 16 and love Forgotten Realms. Play 3.5 twice a week already and would love to join this campaign. Have Vent, Skype and and Axion. I'm reliable, usually early and easy-going. This campaign sounds like a blast and would love to feel what it would be like to adventure in some of the areas of the dozens of books I've read. Email is <a href="mailto:CDavisconvttu@aol.com" rel="nofollow">CDavisconvttu@aol.com</a>, Skype is Facebook:CDavisconvttu EDIT: I also have Herolab. I can generate a char in less than 10 minutes.
Hmm should probably add my email/skype as well. <a href="mailto:lychanking89@hotmail.com" rel="nofollow">lychanking89@hotmail.com</a>. Adding that address should add me to skype as well. If that doesn't work then my skype name should either be lychanking89 or Chris Boutwell.
1. I'm fairly new to Roll20-- just started a SW campaign as my first expedition out. Have been tweaking some of my own campaigns into the system to learn it and to hopefully open those someday soon. 2. 3.5 and I are an old married couple-- been together so long, we don't have to fight anymore. 3. I've got some interesting ideas I'd like to try in the 'core' setting you outlined. I could play: a 2-bladed fighter tank ; maybe a Hin Fist Halfling Paladin/Monk from FRCS as a cool idea (though not sure how practical of a combo it is); a rogue slot with a halfling shadow-dancer-directed build; I'm happy to take arcane or divine slots as well. I've played and enjoy playing most classes (maybe not druids/rangers so much, sorry to any druid/ranger-fans ;-) ). 4. No idea what IRC is. I know what Skype is! We're trying to use TeamSpeak for the other campaign I'm in, though I haven't been in on it yet. Used TeamSpeak and Ventrilio(?) back in the day for EQ, EQ2, and DDO-- used to them bugging up and having to troubleshoot regardless of the mode you choose :-)
I've a question would you allow stuff from races of dragon, Dragon Magic, or Savage Progressions? Oh and do we get regional feat/equipment/languages?
I've a question would you allow stuff from races of dragon, Dragon Magic, or Savage Progressions? Oh and do we get regional feat/equipment/languages? No. As stated in the original post, I will ONLY be allowing feats, skills, etc, from the Base 3.5e game. Also, no, I typically don't use Regional Feats and equipment. I will be giving everyone a specified amount of coin to start with, based off of the Level 3 start, and they will purchase from the equipment list. Languages will be based off of normal selection, using those from the FR Races and what their bonus languages, listed in their race category, would be.
I'd like to thank everyone for their interest so far. I wish I had time for two separate games, but I do not. I would be willing to put the game to a total of six people, but that still leaves five or so who are not going to be able to make it into the game. Thus, I will probably need to look through everyone's posts and see who looks like they would fit best into my style of DMing and play. Naturally, I'm watching this thread to see who returns and are watching this thread of the original bunch who posted that they wanted to play. Hope to hear back from everyone soon enough!
I understand Hypnos. Will check in regularly to keep up on whats going on.
I can vouch for @CDavis77 I played with him in other games. Good role player, and great guy. Deveraux
Ive played a few short run of stuff on Roll 20, i am very familiar with the system.\ Been playing 3.5 or variants using 3.5 rules since 2004. I am open to playing any character or rounding out a team, but if i have to choose my archetype of choice it is ether rogue or spell caster. IRC and Skype are fine, but i just have a issue with open mic's/ and as for character sheets, <a href="http://www.dndsheets.net" rel="nofollow">http://www.dndsheets.net</a> that is a good one, you need to create a account but it is free.
Oh, I should probably make a mention of that: I don't actually use a camera and mic in Roll20, so no need to feel like you need either one in the game. The OOC channel (wherever it's decided to be placed) and in game typing should do just fine.
1: How many of you are already playing in a previous game here at Roll20?I'm in two other groups but they wouldn't conflict. 2: Those of you who said you are not well versed in 3.5e, how well versed ARE you? Are we starting from scratch, do you know how to make a sheet, etc? I've been playing 3.5 since is started. 3: What kind of character would you want to play? I play anything the party needs the most. 4: How familiar are all of you with IRC? If many of you are, then I'd be fine with creating a room for the group to use OOCly. If not, we'll use something more mainstream, like Skype. I have skype, which is preferrable. Just wondering, the "complet" books are fine right?
Just wondering, the "complet" books are fine right? Nope, they aren't. I should probably clarify better. When I say Base 3.5e, I literally mean just what's in the 3.5 SRD that I linked in the first post of this thread. Basically, I've been through a LOT of games and I've found that the best way to get into a game with players that I don't know and will be DMing for is to literally see what they can do with the most basic of ideas. Simplicity allows for a better idea of what you, as players, are capable of, which allows me to understand and tailor my campaigns to the group more effectively. In this case? You basically have the 3.5e Player's Handbook and the 3E Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. That's all. I will be sure to amend the original post to further clarify on 'Base D&D 3.5e'. Sorry for my lack of clarity.
Well it seems everyone so far has been very flexible in what classes they are willing to play I might as well say what I think I would be playing. I've never really played a rogue so I'll pick that class. If we find that we need another role filled I'l gladly go into that position but for now my chosen class will be rogue.
wow its core only? thats awesome that sure makes making your character that much easier haha. I am still up for it :)
I prefer the Core Rulebook only. It doesnt get overly complicated and you can relate to the story because the races/classes are more familiar in the setting. I'd like to stick to a truly core setup and go with a Dwarf Fighter, Full Plate, Tower Shield, Dwarven Waraxe wielding block of flesh that has an attitude and can take a punch. I've actually already created the char in Herolab. His AC is 23 at Level 3, LOL. Of course, his acrobatics/swim/jump/Climb are all -14 and worse but he could take on a giant and swap punches.
One thing I can definitely say, you guys are not making it easy to try and decide who to keep and who to basically try and keep on retainer for if anyone backs out or stops showing up. *chuckles* Many of you seem like a very active group, but I'll probably have to start making decisions on that today. I actually did have one individual ask as to why I couldn't just bring everyone into the game and let the chips fall where they may. I thought that was probably a valid question and I thought I'd answer that for all of you. You see, in every game, there is a delicate balance. For every player there is, there needs to be a challenge that can be overcome by them. An average group in the DMG is considered to be four players and is balanced for that. Once you start going past that, you find two things: more people need to be talking and role playing together in the text and the average party level rises. The average party level rising isn't a bad thing, that can be compensated for by increasing the difficulty of the fights. I can do that easily. However, this also leads to longer, more drawn out fights (more bad guys with higher levels and longer waits between turns)...something that some people tend to get bored and irritated with. Four players at Level 3 makes a Party Level of 3. Eight players at Level 3 makes a Party Level of 5, which means that I'll be having to throw EL 5 fights at you guys just to try and keep up. This likely means more potential fatalities in certain situations and the like. I have had players simply quit, though, because the fights aren't fast enough for them. This is obviously a potential problem. Now, the role playing issue is probably a more severe one. If you have eight people trying to role play, some people are going to get lost in the shuffle, especially the quieter guys, and I end up learning nothing about those players. In every group, there's always a leader. Someone always comes to the fore and assumes that position. Then there's the louder people around the leader who make their thoughts known and become, basically, like seconds in command or lieutenants. Sadly, someone always seems to get left behind in the shuffle. It isn't as much fun if half of the group is left behind and sitting quietly. This is why I typically go for four players, but will expand to six in this case. I imagine even the ones really hyped for this game might have a moment of pause if they suddenly were going to be playing alongside seven others. HOWEVER, since I am flexible, I will allow you guys to offer an opinion: would you play if the game had eight people?
You did say that no voice would be used, that everything will be done with text only I believe. If you make this very clear I think you will find that some change their mind about wanting to join the campaign. I would still be interested but I would wager others would have second thoughts. I would prefer the group stay at 6 max. Anything over that gets messy.
Six would be more manageable so that might be best. Also I made the rogue already as well. Only thing I haven't done is equipment or attributes scores. Also have a token for it already.
Sounds like six would probably be the preference, so I'll be going with that. I'll be starting to contact people a little later. For now though, I wish to offer a slight teaser of things. Though, more accurately, how the group will have come together and a little hint as to how the first adventure will begin. Enjoy! *** The wind of the evening was strong enough to ripple the fabric of the tent and strain at the pegs that kept it solid to the ground. It was expected for this land, but, despite his constant travels, he never found himself used to it blowing in his face as he rode. These trips needed to be taken, though, and irritations dealt with as they moved onward. It didn't help that he could see the forests of Cormanthor in the distance. It made him uneasy. Bandits, Drow and who knew what other horrors lay beyond the edge of those trees. “Sir.” His quill lowered and he glanced up from his business ledger, “Yes? What is it?” “Our people have returned from the local areas. As expected, none of the locals wanted much to do with us. Dalelanders can be stubborn folk about who's coming and going. However, we were able to cobble together a group of foreigners that will accept our coin in return for protecting the convoy after our own...difficulties. It would seem that the journey will be able to go on as planned.” The older man smiled and offered a pleased nod, “Excellent. You have done well and I will be sure my lord rewards you handsomely for your troubles. Now, go on, get some rest and be ready to rouse the men in the morning. Be sure to take stock, personally, of these foreigners and watch them. You never know when a potential guard will turn into a potential thief.” “It will be done, sir,” he replied with a bow before vanishing between the flaps of the tent. The old merchant chuckled quietly. His cargo would be on time. Perfect. ***
Hey Hypnos, do you have a link to the 3.0 Forgotten realms setting? I'd like to see what additional traits/feats, etc. might be apart of that particular settng.
The FR books aren't available on the OGL license like the SRD, so I'm not too sure where to find much for listing. However, I'll double check through the Campaign Setting book and see what might be useful.
I will try to find it somewhere online and post a link also.
I found a 3.5 Players guide to Forgotten Realms - Faerun. Is this the same as the 3.0?
Pretty much, though I'm not actually using that one. I found a few issues with that particular one, so I'm keeping the usable books to the 3.5e Player's Handbook and the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting only. What I might just do later is make a list of feats available in the Campaign Setting, as that'll be easier.
Hey, wondering if there's still room, and if so, what type of character the party needs. I'm comfortable playing any race/class. I'm 28 with about 14 years of experience RPing and 3.5e Faerun is one of my favorite systems/settings.
<a href="http://www.4shared.com/office/BkWXa1pn/DD_35_Forgotten_Realms_Campaig.html" rel="nofollow">http://www.4shared.com/office/BkWXa1pn/DD_35_Forgotten_Realms_Campaig.html</a> Most of the newer feats are stuff you would take at lvl 1. There's a VERY good feat for Wizards. Mind over body. Use int instead of con for hp for first level only and gain +1 hp for every metamagic feat you gain.
