Enemy Token Templates

October 23 (11 years ago)
Hey guys,

I've been searching through the forums and the wiki and can't find a solution to this: Is there a way to make an enemy template.

Say 10 Kobold Minions are required for a map. I can take a token from the library, I can apply whats stats I wish to it, then I can copy and paste that creature 9 times. It takes a lot of time to create the stats for that first token and it's cumbersome to transfer that token between maps [find map with token needed, copy, find map being built, paste].

What I would love to have is a list of creature templates. Kobold Minion is one of those templates. It has the name, the image used, the GM notes / regular notes and all the stats that I've created (strength, constitution, etc, etc) and what the red, green and blue bars are map to what stat. And now I just drag that on to the map 10 times.

They are such similar processes, but the first one just requires a good amount of time to type in stats or find a previous map where the stats have already been created on such a token, and it's not centralized.

I've tried 3 solutions to speed things up and one is marginally faster and one almost seems like it would work but has a large flaw and the last one is still a bit cumbersome.

1. Create Kobold Minion in player journal with all the stats you wish. Apply that kobold minion to the 10 tokens on the map. Unfortunately, when 1 token loses HP, so do all the others since it's tied to the journal entry. Not a feasible solution for a template.

2. Create Kobold Minion in player journal with only 3 different stats - one for the red bar, green bar, blue bar (in my case HP, maybe AC, maybe Temp HP). Apply journal entry to 1 kobold, set red bar to HP, set green bar to AC, set blue bar to Temp HP stats. Remove the journal entry from the token. The name and numbers all stay the same, but it's no longer tied to the journal entry. Copy / paste x 9.

3. Create a map with all tokens used in any encounter. Have all the stats on all of these tokens. Now you can copy it from there on to any map you intend to build.

Does anyone have a solution for quickly deploying multiple tokens of the same type? Is there an script that might do so?

Thanks,
Jordan

Try this:

Create a Kobold minion character sheet. Create a token, and link the HP, AC, and Temp HP to the bars. THEN!!! Unlink the HP & temp HP from the bars. They will retain the values, but changing those bars on the token will no longer change the values on the character sheet.

Set _this_ token as the default token for the Kobold Minion character. You should now be able to drag multiple tokens onto the map from this character sheet, and they will all start with full HP, but it will be tracked individually.

Your solution #1 is the best solution but you need to modify it slightly. Simply do not connect the Kobold's HPs to the character sheet. Then set that token to be the default token.

Now, when you create a token it creates a token with the correct HPs but those HPs are not linked to the character sheet.

You guys are great. Thanks a ton for the suggestions. I'll try them out.

Gauss,

Awesome way to handle this. One small issue. The token macros don't appear to hand around once you delink. I know it's a new feature and all, but getting that to stick around really makes this feature sing.

Chez, could you clarify your statement? Provide an example perhaps?

Sure,

I have a journal entry for a minion, I pull the name down and add it to an encounter sheet. The stats carry over as do the token macros. So cool. I edit the token and de-link it from the character sheet. The stats stay on the token and can be edited independently. However, when I select the de-linked token, I no longer get the token macros that were on the character sheet it was instanced from.

A work around I'm considering is keeping one linked minion token on the gm layer and using it as a button for the minion macro while keeping the tokens representing each individual member of the minion swarm on the object level de-linked.

You shouldn't de-link the token from the character sheet. De-link the bars from the character sheet.

You should delink the bars, as Gauss suggested, and then save the token as the default token for the journal entry.

Brilliant, user error. Typically what gets me. Thanks.

This should go to the Wiki.

As a bonus, here is how you can have ONE goblin character sheet with multiple goblin tokens:

1) Make a rolling table, call it "goblin-token".
2) Add entries in the rolling table. Names don't matter. Assign one of your goblin token image per entry. For example if you have 3 goblin tokens, make 3 entries in the table and assign one token per entry in the Icon. Once done, Save and exit the table.
3) Make a token of your rolling table (click on TOKEN next to it in the list). This will create a token with an image taken from one of your entries on your current board.
4) Create a Character Sheet for your goblins and edit it with whatever you want.
5) Edit the rolling table token on your board as you want your goblin token to show and link it to your character sheet for your goblin.
5) Once you are 100% sure that you got everything right for the token, go to your character sheet and set this as the sheet token.

There, now you have a Goblin character sheet with a rolling table of goblin tokens.
To use it, simply drag and drop the character sheet on the board. This will create an instance of a goblin token. To change the token, right click on it and choose either "Random Side" (will randomly take a token from your rolling table) or "Choose Side" (you select).

And there you go! Tons of goblin tokens, all linked to the same character sheet!! :)

As a note, this is great for humanoids or just to give some variety if you have multiple tokens for the same race. For example, it's great if you have a default "civilian" character sheet and want some easy to use variety while still keeping the stats.
Also great if you have say creatures using weapons. Make all the weapons damage macros in the character sheet itself, then select the tokens you want (ie: spearman, archer, axemen, etc). Your entire army of kobolds (and your dozens of tokens) can now use only one character sheet :)

Overall, it cuts down on having 1000000 character sheets, half of them just very tiny variations of each others....

PS: One of the downside is that these tokens don't "stick" to the grid. Annoying but hopefully that'll be solved at some point. They also seem to generate a slight lag, though not 100% sure. (see below!)

That's how I have my D&D Next campaign set up. If you want the rollable table tokens to snap to the grid, you need to right click on the token and uncheck IsDrawing in the advanced menu.
