Adding Player Controlled Objects to Journal?

Hi everyone! Just started with Roll20, and I didn't find anything on this subject in the forums in my searches, so hopefully you have some suggestions on how to tackle my objective! I am trying to create player controlled objects that are not NPCs that simulate Dancing Lights. Currently I have them defined as an NPC and put into the Journal under the character that can cast the spell. The idea would be that when he casts the spell, he can drop 4 Dancing Lights onto the map and have them generate their dynamic light. This works as I want, but I was wondering if there is a way for me to include non-NPCs in the Journal so that player's will have access to them without having to drop them onto the map ahead of time. Do I just keep working around this by using an NPC definition? Maybe I'm trying to make it more complicated than it needs to be... Thanks! Chris

For spell effects like this, I've always handled it as a character that can be controlled by all players. That lets them drag it into the map (pre-sized) and put it where they want. They can then remove it later as needed.

Hi Chris. If I follow the question correctly, the answer is: Make the Dancing Lights as Characters, so that you can configure the lightbulb tokens so your players can do what you described. (Correct, they would be like NPC's in Roll20 interface even though it's just a light not really an NPC person). It won't work to make them as Handouts under Journals because Handouts don't have a Token, even though otherwise that would seem like a good way to make them not have the unnecessary Character Sheet. Wiki docs: https://wiki.roll20.net/Journal https://wiki.roll20.net/Dynamic_Lighting_Examples
Awesome! Thanks for confirming that I'm doing it the best way. My players love the dynamic lighting. Asymmetric information has great appeal and has been much desired. Loving it!
