That sounds like the correct core book. You should create four characters. If you use the Fodder macro (see image below), it will roll up the character for you and put the information in a character sheet. After you use the macro you'll see some characters named things like Uchini #1, Uchini #2, etc. After that, realize that your characters are humans, elves, dwarves, and halflings that live in a decaying world ruled by vampires. Of these vampires, there is a Red King and a Heart Queen at war with each other. There are other vampire factions but you aren't familiar with them. Humans (and the other races) are nothing more than cattle to these rulers. The lucky few become their servants. Even rarer are those who escape the clutches of the vampires and live cowering in fear in hidden villages called "orb locs". Go  here and roll 1d4 for each character, looking up the result in the Native section. Let me know when you're done and I will check everything to make sure it looks okay!

Cool character pictures! I made the stat adjustments for you and double-checked everything. The only thing left for you to do is decide on alignments (Law, Neutrality, Chaos). One thing to remember, you'll lose most or all of these fast. Never get too attached in DCC!
