Int Check: 5E Hexcrawl Wilderness Survival Exploration

Hi there! Thanks for dropping by, here's what you need to know :D I am currently working on a Hexcrawl open-world map for 5E and this is a quick pre-check to see if there's any interest. By the time official recruitment starts the entire campaign/continent shall be finished and further adjustments shall only be made for player effect on the world. This is an extended campaign rather then a oneshot. To further reiterate: this campaign is likely to start in a few weeks to a month at most, not immediately. Please note the day/time has not been set just yet, but this shall take place in GMT , either weekly or bi-weekly. A little about the campaign (No spoilers!): A group of strangers arrive in uncharted lands with no hope of return to civilisation. Untold treasures litter the landscape amid the trials and tribulations of beasts, dungeons and trying terrain. Can they eek out an existance on the edge of the world and prosper, or will they simply turn to dust among the bones of those who came before...? Looking for 3 or 4 players at a push, a mix of both new and experienced players welcome as we are mixed already! Familiarity with hexcrawl is also not necessary, though delightful. There will be a session 0 to settle in and get cozy with your party, work out our RP dyamics, and go over any homebrew stuff that's be helpful to know.  Voice chat expected via Discord. This is a Survival campaign: rations, fatigue, weight, ammo, weather ect. shall be tracked. It will be possible, though difficult, for the party to wander into dangerous areas above their level. "safe" areas may also be reclaimed by the wilderness if threats within the area or nearby are left to fester. This is Open World : a heavy focus is set on player-driven actions and decisions. The continent is populated by dungeons, magic, monsters and baddies but it is purely the parties decision what they wish to investigate. Bear in mind creatures here have their own plans: and they will act on them in their own time if left uninpeded - though perhaps some of these shall never truly reach the players, depending on their actions. This is a Wilderness campaign: Settlements are few and far between, and many are unfriendly. Friendly settlements will need PC help to survive in such a brutal place, but as everything on the map, this is a choice (though session 1 shall origionate in a "friendly" area).  Ground up, you start at Lvl 1. Player death is a fair possibility, so please be emotionally prepared for that :) Some homebrew: slightly different god pantheon (same domains), critical fail/successes via percentage dice, Numenera-esque influences and adjusted survival mechanics to add to the focus of the campaign. But do not fear: there isn't a boatload of information for you to memorise, what little there is shall be covered and a reference provided, and you can always ask the DM if you have any questions. A heavy focus on characters and RP though with great oppurtunities for combat and skills. You will regularly be asked questions that will have a strong effect on the style of the campaign, so keep that in mind! A little about what's expected from Players: A healthy attitude, enthusiasm and a willingness to engage. A mic and fluency in the english language A passion for storytelling and character development over min maxing, rules lawyering, minutia or delaying progress in the name of a mechanics discussion: the characters and story will always be more important then the systems used to facilitate them.  A respect for your fellow players and DM A little about your DM: I started playing AD&D a bunch, skipping along to 3.5 and briefly 4, but this is my first whack at 5e. I've also played a few other systems (GMed for Numenera, Player for Sword & Wizardry, Player for Vampire the Masquerade and Shadowrun)  My last big campaign I DMed for D&D was AD&D a good decade ago so I'm a little rusty! I am also pretty new to 5e. I run a pretty chill sesh and I'm all set for the glory of banter and good fun. IC may get tense at times but OOC should be kept friendly at all times. I would like to get a deeper understanding of how my players like to play, their motivations ect. before first session, so I'll probably be asking you for a quick 1x1 chat once the cogs and gears are underway!  Feel free to drop me a PM and get to know your DM and campaign a little better, or ask me questions if you need anything! I don't bite, but my owlbears do. * Congratulations! You have navigated the first challenge of surviving this thread. You're probably ready to tackle your first dungeon now, right...?
bump!

This indeed does sound fun and I'd certainly be interested in a Hexcrawl game because I haven't experienced a lot of those. I'm at GMT +1 so I'll keep my eyes open.
I've played a lot of D&D but never managed to join hexcrawl game before. I'd love to finally try it. I also love any campaign with a heavy focus on RP and character development. Count me interested!
Sounds pretty fun, haven't scratched the 5e itch in a while but the Volo's guide has me looking now. What times GMT would be the only thing, I generally don't get home from work until 6/630pm GMT. A wilderness campaign to help give use to the barbarian and rangers tracking abilities sounds awesome.
Oh! this is really interesting, can't wait to hear more.
I've never done a true hexcrawl campaign, but this sounds like a lot of fun and I would definitely be interested. I'm CST (GMT -6?) but my availability is early so it tends to work well with GMT games.
Definitely interested depending on the day/time. decent experience with 5e - none with hexcrawling :)
PM Sent. I'm interested depending on time and day of course.

Thankyou for the interest everyone! Once things start coming together I'll send out some date/time ideas and start getting this solidified! I'm also working on a homebrew reference pdf so players can refer to it if they need to.  I'll go over everything during the mystical and wondrous session 0, but as a general jist of things that are getting used/expanded/changed: - You may chose a race from Eberron or Volo's Guide to Monsters, excluding Aarakocra or varient Tiefling (flying is pretty powerful!). Warforged mechanics will be tweaked a little, as will anyone who can meditate (e.g. elves) - You may take a feat at lvl 1 - You may duelclass - once, and it must be with good roleplay reason. No Wizard Druid Monk Warlock Paladin Rangers, or taking Paladin 2 to min-max. - At lvl 1 or when you would gain a skill proficiency, you may instead take a proficiency in a tool (e.g. thieves tools, herbalism kit, alchemist kit, blacksmith tools, poisoners kit, ect) Using the tool without the proficiency means disadvantage. - Herbalism, Alchemy, Tracking, Hunting, Mining (and *hopefully* Cooking, still working on it) have all been expanded to be more meaningful!  - Dark Vision distance is halved - No create food/water spells - Planning on limiting how Prestidigitation can create campfires... still thinking how to do this, since it would be nice to light candles and things, but it's a little cheaty if every night you can magic up your bonfire. I think that's everything so far, I'll edit if I remember anything. This thread is now closed to new interest until it's become clear that the time/dates line up to those who have already shown interest :D Also @Adam C. Volo's Guide is pretty great. And I'm really hoping to give barbarians/rangers the ability to shine. I might be nerfing them a little, because they are very survival-campaign-deus-ex-machina, but they should still stay really powerful, since it's their wheelhouse :D
I would be interested in playing as well if you still have room.
