1. The "X is typing" notifier shouldn't show up if the user starts with /w it gets distracting to see everyone typing all the time but never see any output This is fixed in the next update. If you start typing any / command (/w, /roll, etc.) or start typing a macro with "#", it won't send a "...is typing" update. 4. Everyone requested a Settings option to disable the chat notification sound. Just to be sure this is working properly: it should only do the sound if a new chat message comes in and you aren't on the Roll20 window (e.g. you're in another tab in your browser) or you are doing something else in Roll20 besides the text chat (e.g. working in the Journals tab). If it's working properly and still annoying I'll add an option to disable it, just want to make sure it's not going off on every message or something.

Yesterday we had our first session with Roll20. It was a great experience. There is not much to say about the basic functionality. We all were well satisfied with the core functionality. There were just a few thing I want to mention: The measure tool: - The measure tool need to work while moving a token badly. - We need different scales. It is simply annoying to divide always the feet by 5 to get the distance in meters. - The measure tool needs different colors. Black on a dark map does not look well ;) Voice chat - Make the video boxes appear on the top side of the screen, since the webcams are usuasly mounted on the top of a monitor. It looks more like looking directly in someones face this way. - Make it visual who is speaking. Esp. when someone does not have a webcam, it is important to see who is speaking. Sounds: - Possibility to send sounds directly to a player - Uploading own sounds (maybe in a kind of streaming) Turn tracker: The main issues we had is about the turn tracker. It simply did not work for us well. In fact it was close to be not useable. The suggestions I give you were not a big issue during small encounters, but in the big fight in a kind of cafe, we had 4 PC and about 20 NPC on the map and on the turntracker, where some NPC came in later and some had to vanish since they were dead. - Make it visible somehow where a new round starts. - Make it possible to add new participants in the turn tracker and remove them on the fly. Currently there is no way to add or remove a token when the tracker is open. It is really important to add new tokens and remove them to handle a death or new arrivals well. - There must be a kind of automatic reorder according the number a token has on the turn tracker. In small encounters it is not much trouble, but imagine the encounter I mention above... - In some role playing games, someone can get "on hold" during a turn. This means, he can postpone his action to later. I would like to set a flag (or let the controling player do it) when he get's on hold, to have an overview on the turn tracker who has his action and who is still on hold. With the big encounter, we simply stopped using the turn tracker. It was simply not usable. But: Even I listet a few things here, we all agreed that Roll20 looks very promising and we had much fin playing :)
- Make it visual who is speaking. Esp. when someone does not have a webcam, it is important to see who is speaking. Some group chat systems have a volume meter on the side of the video. I think this works quite well to indicate who is speaking, or who's sending those annoying low volume background noises. The "blinking frame" solution Skype is using is just annoying and not very helpful.
Had our first trial game yesterday while our friends were in town (so we could handle technical issues locally). A few things that would be very nice to keep things flowing: 1. Tokens on GM Layer should be able to be marked Takes a Turn but should NOT show up on the Turn Tracker until they are moved to the Token Layer. I want my hidden band of Orcs to pop up out of nowhere and not have a delay in the action while I edit each one to make them take a turn. *The new Ctl-Shift-G/O shortcuts worked great for moving them though. 2. Copy/Paste of Token should copy ALL details in the token - GM Notes included. If info needs to be different I'll change it. 3. Map-Making - Copy/Paste of tile randomly places the pasted tile? Lost a couple tiles when I got close to the right edge of the map too (increased map size temporarily to get the tile back). Would probably work better if paste placed the element adjacent to the copied element, though I'm not sure how much control of this you have. 4. Map-Making take 2 - It'd also be nice if the currently selected element could be moved using the arrow keys. Normal mode, 1 click = 1 grid square. Alt-mode, 1 click = 1 pixel or something like that (if possible). 5. Can't wait til we have something like this: <a href="http://www.tricedesigns.com/2012/02/02/bleeding-edge-html5-webrtc-device-access/" rel="nofollow">http://www.tricedesigns.com/2012/02/02/bleeding-edge-html5-webrtc-device-access/</a> to use instead of Flash... :)
Had our first experience last Friday with a group of 4 + the GM. Overall it went really well and everyone was impressed by the system. The only things that were strongly requested was ability to restrict FoW to one or more particular users (so if only one person enters a room, only they should be able to see the layout), or when people split up you can move individual users to a specific page. Letting the users edit their own tokens would be benefital too, but from what I understand, that's in the works. This Friday we'll be conducting a larger 8 + GM group, so I'll let you know what it's like with a larger group!
Had our first run with the system last night, playing D&D4e. My group (5 players) has been with me a long time (10+ years, with a break over the last 3 years after we all scattered), and we used Maptools for about 6 months before this - what an improvement this is! Pros: - every single person remarked upon how easy it was to get started. Everyone understood the basics of within 10 minutes. - Web based - yay! So much easier!! - Ability to modify characters offline. Totally awesome! - make your own macro builder. this was a total time suck for our non-technical gamers before - moving around was smooth, zoom worked well, and everyone loved the Jukebox feature. - so many, many more features (like grabbing tokens on the fly with search!! wow!!) Cons: - Video Chat was super buggy. There is a definite lag in both video and sound, but video was especially bad. Several people had to refresh a few times, and eventually just turned video off and went audio only. We were pretty scattered - Hawaii, Seattle, Portland and Salt Lake City, so that may have something to do with it. We plan to continue using Google+ Hangouts until performance picks up. Wish Lists (I've seen some of these in other posts - I'm just repeating what my group wants) - ability to make multiple kinds of rolls in a single macro (attack & dmg). - hit the up button to repeat a roll - ability to resize the chat window - rename status icons - instead of just a colored dot, each dot would have a name in the menu, and a tool tip would float over upon mouseover. Makes it easier to see where the bonuses & penalties are for each monster/character. - Is there a way to drag a character's avatar picture onto the map as a token? Seems like re-uploading everyone's pics was redundant and takes up extra storage. - the save campaign button should give some sort of indicator like "Save Successful" or something like that. Too many bad memories of losing Maptools work. - When everyone is moved to a new page, have a way to force an initial zoom level so everyone knows where they are. - If the DM is pointing or pinging off of a player's map, can we get an arrow or indicator of the direction (no, John, he's pointing North! - hotkeys for macros? Ability to set F1 as Macro#1, etc. THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing this to life!! It's really, really cool and we could probably play forever as is right now - looking forward to future iterations.

- the save campaign button should give some sort of indicator like "Save Successful" or something like that. Too many bad memories of losing Maptools work. Save button? Is there one? I think it's constantly saved isn't it? - If the DM is pointing or pinging off of a player's map, can we get an arrow or indicator of the direction (no, John, he's pointing North There is a new shift-ping that centers everyone on your ping.
- the save campaign button should give some sort of indicator like "Save Successful" or something like that. Too many bad memories of losing Maptools work. Save button? Is there one? I think it's constantly saved isn't it? Correct, there is no "Save" button. I think maybe he means the "Exit Game" button. But yeah, as soon as you do anything, it's synced with the server (since we have to do that anyway for the real-time updates part to work so your players see what's going on).
I just ran my first game on Saturday 19th May, and it all went pretty well. As others have already said, my players were all quite impressed with how Roll20 worked and the features it offered. They were understanding that this is a beta, and that there are a few rough edges around the place. Before the game we had a bit of a play with some of the features like fog of war and tokens, although we did not end up using many of them during the game session (the first session of a Trail of Cthulhu adventure). During the game itself we mainly used the video and text chat, plus the dice roller. I also used the character journals and handout features, and these all worked well. I used a couple of tabletops to show maps of Cleveland, and liked the cursor ping function to point out where things were. I found using the dice roller in the text chat increased the clarity and transparency of the rolling - when everyone can see what you rolled and what the result was, it greatly reduces the "was that the result or what you rolled" type questions when using physical dice in a game played via video. We had a few issues with the TokBox video conferencing. We had some fairly serious lag particularly in video (which didn't bother us too much), but also in audio. The audio was at times rather difficult to understand, with at time poor quality and delays causing confusion to participants in the conversations. I think for future sessions we will mute the video chat and use Mumble for voice communications, which seems to work much better. I realise that you guys have little control over the performance of TokBox, it being a 3rd party service, but I thought I should let you know anyway. Overall, myself and all of my players were impressed with how it all worked, especially considering it is still in beta. We'll definitely continue to use it for future sessions.
Ran an awesome campaign with my buddies! We are using the Palladium Role Playing game. Everything is pretty amazing. The issues we had are totally minor. Some lag issues and the music didn't always work. Really minor stuff in the big picture of things. One of my friends want to GM a campaign now. Is there anyway for him to change from a player account to a GM account? Any idea when it will be opened up to more people?
Nine years ago I moved to a city some 800 odd kilometres from my gaming group and I've games very little since so unfortunately my first Roll20 wasn't as smooth as I might have wished. I'm happy to say though that it was mostly a result of me being rusty rather than anything else. Other than some early technical problems with the video chat (I had one headset/webcam combo that crashed it every time and some other people could get audio but not video) it worked fairly well. The chat logs froze up for a few players a couple of times but a refresh fixed it on each occasion. I forgot to use my music and all the sound effects that I've compiled in my sound cloud and couldn't get fog of war to work but hopefully I'll read the documentation and sort that out. One thing quite a few of my players mentioned was the turn tracker. It'd be good if you could manually override it so it wasn't dependant on tokens. In an ideal world I'd like to be able to just type in the names of people/monsters involved in a combat and enter the phases they have actions in (maybe separated by commas) - this would support both systems where players get actions in one phase a turn (like D&D) and ones where characters get actions in multiple phases (Shadowrun, 7th Sea). Setting an override up would make it easier to run unplanned encounters.
You can already add multiple turns to the tracker for tokens, just do Add Turn (in the Right-Click menu for the token) or Ctrl+U while the token is selected as many times as you want.
Correct, there is no "Save" button. I think maybe he means the "Exit Game" button. But yeah, as soon as you do anything, it's synced with the server (since we have to do that anyway for the real-time updates part to work so your players see what's going on). Save button screen shot attached. Looks like it's probably for the out of character name, but you get the idea.
(I'm a Benefactor.) Finally got a chance to run a Real Game last night. This is the first game I've GM'd in more than 10 years, and ultimately, it was all because of how great Roll20 looked. Had to find a group and timeslot, thus why I'm late to the party. I'll be writing up a more in-depth "How I Used Roll20" post later this week (or early next week) as well, and will keep everyone informed. Anyways, all in all, it went well. We had an initial hiccup where someone's Tokbok wasn't working which was eventually traced to a Flash blocker. Obvious in hindsight, but we spent about 15 minutes getting there. Other comments during play: - Why do players see the Jukebox tab? It was always empty, never modifiable. - I'd like to be able to add notes to items added to the Jukebox. The first major scene was a funeral procession that's broken up by a fight, and I had three different pieces of music (before the fight, during the fight, and after the fight). Unfortunately, the tracks had names like "Funeral procession" and "Funeral Day", so it was difficult to remember which one was which without trying them again. Given that they were already added to the Jukebox, I was unable to preview them without broadcasting to the players. - I'd like to be able to sort the Characters tab. Alternatively, make characters marked as a PC more obvious without having to open the character overlay itself. Being able to sort the Characters tab will allow me to keep "current" or relevant NPCs at the top of the list, without having to delete older NPCs that are still relevant. Currently, my players have to continuously scroll down to the bottom of the list to find the newest NPCs. - PC characters should probably NOT show up in the Character chat dropdown for the GM, though I can understand why they do. I just fear the dropdown getting too large to be useful over time. - I'd like some sort of autocomplete for "talking as character" that lets me type instead of mousing over to the dropdown all the time. Maybe an "/as [autocomplete character names]" command. Or being able to use them in a macro ("When running this macro, do it as..."). I'd basically like to switch characters with the keyboard only. - We've got "Broadcast only audio", but there's no "Broadcast only video". Yes, I can't speak, but that doesn't mean I don't want to do visual things. I had a webcam shot of my hands typing, with a candle, and I plan some other things for future sessions. Pretty low priority though, given that I can just mute the audio on the Tokbox. - In preparation for the "How I Used Roll20" article mentioned above, I asked a few of my players to make screenshots of what they were seeing. I knew that they all had different browsers and window sizes, but I was really surprised by how MUCH different they were. One player couldn't even see a full-sized image I had made on the screen without scrolling around. I'd love to be able to "Show user viewports" which would give me a set of colored borders around the playarea to show me what they're able to see. - What do the colors on the video blocks actually do? - Another vote for mouseover or always-on token labels. We got by with the turn tracker labeling, but we only discovered that about 75% of the way through the first fight, and it still wasn't entirely ideal. Given that this was a brand new group, we had very little concept of who was who and who controlled who, so it was just a mass of tokens with green bars, further exasperated by the fact that the fight was against a bunch of villagers which had the same visual style as the characters. There are all minor complaints though - keep up the good work!
What do the colors on the video blocks actually do? The per/user color sets your "ping" color right now, and I believe will be tied into drawing tools after the overhaul.
Morbus: Lots of good feedback, thanks! To pull out a couple of specifics: Why do players see the Jukebox tab? It was always empty, never modifiable. When you are actually playing something it should show up in their list. It was sort of intended as a "see what the name of the song is in case you like it" sort of thing, but I understand if no one really uses it. We've got "Broadcast only audio", but there's no "Broadcast only video". Yes, I can't speak, but that doesn't mean I don't want to do visual things. I had a webcam shot of my hands typing, with a candle, and I plan some other things for future sessions. Pretty low priority though, given that I can just mute the audio on the Tokbox. That's what you should do (just mute the mic input on Tokbox). The only reason there is a separate setting for "Broadcast Only Audio" is because it's a lot harder to turn off your camera in the Tokbox widget (you have to go to the settings panel and then click two or three more things), whereas muting your audio is pretty easy. Also a lot of folks (including a player in my regular group) turn off video due to bandwidth reasons, whereas again if you've got enough b/w to do video, audio is a very small hit comparatively on top of that. I'd love to be able to "Show user viewports" which would give me a set of colored borders around the playarea to show me what they're able to see. A very interesting idea, I'll see what I can do... Things that you mentioned already on the todo list: - I'd like to be able to add notes to items added to the Jukebox. - All of the Character tab changes (re-order, PCs more obvious, etc.) - /as command Thanks again!
Finished my second session recently. Some more comments: * My art assets should show me what ones are actually being used. During my pre-fiddling, I had tons of duplicate-named art assets with no real clear indication of which were being used (on pages or as image attachments to characters or handouts). Also, it seems like assets are duplicated across usage: if I upload a character image to be used on a page, and then the same image to be attached to a character, that *seems* to count as two images. Being able to search through my art asset library for characters and handouts would reduce this duplication. * It happened for the second time this session: I moved to another page but forgot to drag the stupid red player's marker to it. Moving tokens around and uploading things while people can't see them is always hilariously entertaining, especially when they're supposed to see them. The only indication of where the players are is the red bookmark on the pages pulldown, but that doesn't help me much if it's not pulled down. I'd love to see a small red bar, stretched across the top of the current page, saying my players are NOT on the page I'm looking at. * One of my players reported that it is very easy to mute yourself without knowing it. Or, muting yourself and then forgotten you're muted. A key command to mute and unmute (in essence, a push-to-talk feature) would be useful, as well as an always-on indicator of mute status vs. a hover-only. * We use the chat functionality instead of speaking about 95% of the time. If we've scrolled the chat window up to refer to something else, and a new comment comes in, the chat window is automatically scrolled to the new comment. While this is useful for accidental scrolling, it's frustrating as all heck for purposeful scrolling.
Great feedback, thanks Morbus
So far, really like how clean and mostly intuitive the UI is. Some of my initial thoughts: Help/Tooltips: While this will fade as I get more used to the UI/etc, it'd be great if there were help icons on tooltips or the like (ex: On tokens to give more information on what the Modifiers are used for, etc). Macros: It's hard to gauge how much you can do with the Macro options under Settings. It'd be great to have a FAQ or library linked from that to give you ideas of what commands work, possibly a community macro library you could import from. I could see this being how I convert over much of what i have already built in MapTools as they have a very customizable macro element that makes things like powers/etc (ex; 4th Ed D&D) easier to set up for players. As well, it would be great (if this doesn't exist) if players would be able to pre-make macros and import them per character so they can be retrieved between sessions. Really cool so far though!
This is fun.
This is fun. Might be my favorite first response so far :)
At the moment I'm just figuring how Roll20 works and what are its features, so I have been testing the app, and I like very much the potential that I see in it. Really quick and easy to set up games here. Additionally, despite being in beta status, I'm glad seeing how many features it has in comparison with other VTTs (hexgrid, token rotation, token statuses). I'm figuring how to handle character sheets -maybe I'll do it by means of Handouts or entire tabs.
By the way, my first experience has been a Roll20 feature test without any glitches nor bugs. To my mind the app is pretty solid in its current stage or development, or I may have been lucky, but anyway kudos to the devs for that.
After more testing I'm not finding real bugs as it happens in many beta apps, which is great. Just minor connection issues: nothing that pushing F5 (reload) can't solve. My friend likes Roll20 very much.
I just had my first session with my group yesterday. We're a relatively new group that has been using a combination of Skype and a desktop sharing website. We decided last night to use Skype instead of the Roll20 built-in voice chat. I have to say that I am pretty impressed. I only encountered a few problems, which I'll outline shortly. But I wanted to start by talking about what I really liked. I am a big fan of how easy it is to search and add tokens and backgrounds to my map. I recognize that there isn't currently a lot of community content at the moment, but once that goes full force, the token search will be unmatched. It is very easy to find proper music in the Jukebox, although I'll have a few comments about it below. The hide/reveal function with the fog of war is great! I made very good use of it. Okay, now to the comments and suggestions and bugs I encountered. I'll go point by point. 1) Jukebox: For some reason, two of my players were having difficulty hearing the Jukebox playing when I was testing it out (we didn't end up really using it for the session, we just tried it out before we started). I'm not sure what went wrong, although I suspect it may actually be a Skype thing (Skype has a tendency to lower the volume on other programs). But I'm not sure. 2) Jukebox 2: It would be nice to be able to skip ahead while listening to a preview of the song. Sometimes they can take a moment to really get into the meat of the song. 3) Drawing: Is there a way to limit who can draw on a map? As soon as my players found the drawing function they immediately start doodling. It wasn't a problem once I requested they stop, but in the future it could help to limit their ability to only when they need it (a simple flag to allow or disallow would be fine). 4) Drawing 2: One of my players drew on the map and then deleted it. It went away, but when I moved everyone to a different map and then back to that previous one, the drawing was back. And now none of us could select it to remove it again. I have tried going back yet to see if it is still there, but it was extremely distracting for the rest of the night. 5) Character Tokens: For some reason, giving everybody the ability to "see" the details of a token (such as HP, AC, etc) was not working. The only way anyone could see those details is if I gave them control of the token. Is this a bug, or was I just using it improperly? 6) Character Tokens 2: The "X" status isn't centered on the token, so it looks kind of funny. It seems to be in line with the other status dots. Speaking of the "X", two of my players thought the X was the cancel button so that they could back out of the status "dot" menu. Not a big deal, but maybe something you can think about moving around so it is more obvious it is another status. 7) Is there a way to duplicate a token without having to copy/paste? Say, for example, I find a tile that I want to use over a wide range of squares for my map (like a repeating grass tile). I had to copy/paste it over and over. It'd be better if I could just copy it over a large range of cells (instead of expanding it, for example). Is this a function, or would it be feasible to add one? 8) Is there an easy way to show the players a handout or a picture? Would I have to create a separate page for that and just upload it as a token? That's all for now. My next session is in a week and I'll continue to look for other potential bugs and suggestions. Thank you!
Ok, now I'll go through and try and address all your points :) 1) I'm pretty sure you're right. I think it's skype lowering/muting the volume of other applications 2) I'll pass this suggestion along 3) Currently, there's no drawing restrictions, and the devs have said that if they do add it, it's a very longterm goal, since there's a lot of other bugs and features that they want to work on first. I recommend turning any unsolicited artwork into gelatinous cubes :) 4) That does not sound like it's working as intended. I'll file a bug report. 5) Just to check, you have player permission checked to "see" the bar, but not edit? and do you also have values in both halves of the box? ex 20/20? without a "max" value set, the bar won't appear, and the fly out bubble only appears if you have "edit" rights. 6) Status markers are on the table for a bit of an overhaul. The scope of the overhaul hasn't been completely determined yet, but I'd guess that some of the positioning issues (Like the fact that purple dots actually appear beside the token) will be sorted out then. 7) <a href="http://youtu.be/YgBgQ9gsEiI" rel="nofollow">http://youtu.be/YgBgQ9gsEiI</a> 8) Handouts! hokay. Above the chat bar on the right of your screen, you should see a tab that kinda looks like a newspaper (the tooltip popup calls it the Journal) In there, you have two sections. One for Characters (PC's and/or NPC's) where you can include some info, a picture, and there's a top secret GM only field. You can then assign ownership to players, decide who can see the item and check off "is player" which will allow people who "own" the player to speak as them in chat (helps differentiate "In Character" and "Out of Character" chat. Below that, you'll see a "Handouts" section, where you can create notes, etc. This can be text, a picture or a mixture of each. You also have the ability to decide which players can see which handouts (or, just set it to all if you want everyone to see it) -- Great for secret notes, or passing off stuff in a language that only certain players can read! Hope this helps.
1-3) Thanks! 4) Just to update on this bug. I have gone back into the game and the drawing is still on the map. I am still unable to select it and so cannot delete it (I have made sure to use the Drawing specific selector). I'll probably have to re-create the map in another page, which won't take too long, unless a fix is found. 5) Looks like I was using this feature incorrectly. I had player permission set to "see" but not edit, but I didn't have values in both halves of the box I think. I edited the values straight from the bubble without realizing there was more to the feature than just that. I'll play around with it more this week to make sure I understand it better for the next session. 7) Haha, now I feel stupid. The whole time and I guess I never tried the orange dragger. 8) That does help. I hadn't had a chance to check out everything prior to the game, so I am a little bit unfamiliar with the Character tab (and didn't realize it had a handout portion). I'll take a look and will definitely use it for the next session. Thank you very much!
I just had some additional thoughts about #4 I know you said a player drew it, but could you try from the three different layers to see if you can select it (Token, GM and Map) in case some strange database hiccup caused by solar flares and the transit of Venus managed to move it somehow? You said that you were using the drawing select tool, so in the spirit of all the tech support people that have come before me: Have you tried using the drawing select tool? ( had to ask, sorry ) :)
My first impressions: * lots of things don't work or not at all as intended or as one assumes it would (see later, tagged with "$" instead of "*") * lack of features everywhere, using the tool is getting pretty uncomfortable (and a bit illogical at some places as well) already, with just a few features added yet... * even if this seems negative, in general it won't be a bad tool $ can't add "quest text" anywhere, just notes for myself to follow my story (using a word doc on PC right now, so I need to copy that over to all machines or use e.g. googledocs...) $ trying to add text to a "chapter" is painful. can add it with no trouble but can't move the textbox... so adding a title for an opening/starting screen ("chapter") is a pain in the butt $ can't add my own songs to jukebox. doesn't really matter though as jukebox doesn't seem to play back anything, no matter how hard I press play button :) - also can't remove any song... $ items (e.g. handouts) don't get sorted in alphabetic order, or at least remain in the same order as I added them but popping up randomly (different look on different PCs/browsers - sigh!). can't even move them by hand (drag&drop or up/down button next to each item) $ chat window must be on the right side, can't move it outside e.g. to another window and make it flash/etc to notify me when it updates (e.g. skype, or any messenger), so it's very uncomfortable and when it come to play with my friends, it'll be a pain in the butt $ can't upload files to store them for the quest. e.g. adding a pdf, word doc or something. it'll be very-very-very-andabitmore painful to add all autopsy reports to my quest typing them all on the site (instead of having a quick and simple text editor, change a thing or two and add the updated item as new) $ for the above, no feature to "save as" e.g. handouts to quick copy them and have multiple items with minor -but important- differences $ handouts2: no options to have "hand written text on postit", "old script", etc backgrounds, so one has to create all the notes and stuff by hand, having no templates to chose from (what I do now is word, screenshot and upload the image...) $ when adding NPCs, should have a DB of faces to chose from, instead of fiddling around all the time with google image search $ no option for grouping, which would be very useful even for small quests, not mentioning huge campaigns... e.g. "places", "notes", "proof", "weapons", "suspicious items", "material components", "items of interest", etc, etc. now what I do is tagging/prefixing (e.g. "places.houses.NPCname.outside/hall/livingRoom") but as no alhapbetic order/sorting, it's still a damn mess... $ app. doesn't remember my settings (e.g. hide my video) which is annoying $ can't set quest's type (e.g. ad&d, cthulhu, d&d -3rd-, shadowrun, cyberpunk, etc) which would be a great feature on the long run to categorize and e.g. share quests within the community, also if will be added the core enginge/ruleset of different games, the rules can be supported on the UI (charsheets for players, don't lookup for futuristic weapons if I search for "ranged weapon" in google for d&d but bows and arrows only, offer default dices to players, default handling of HP/mana/armor/etc, etc...) $ can't quicktag & quicknote. so when I have players and will have to 'fine tune' or update the quest according to player actions (they do something I was not prepared to...) I'll have to use 3rd party tool. if I have a feature of adding quest details (mentioned above...) I could have a "comments" block too, same thing as in word but visible to GM only (e.g. "oups, a shortcut! players didn't do A or B but figured out a C solution for the issue I made; update quest as NPC 'X' won't do this or that as will be dead already...) tons of other things... thrillions on my mind TBH... but... that's all for now :) cheers, mark [edit]one more thing might be useful adding "as fast as possible" :) on the chapter screen, the background shouldn't be just drag to tile/fill, but there could be 2 buttons, such as in windows background: 1 is for tile, so copy the image selected to every single hex on the full size of map, 2 is for stretch, so pull out the image (even if losing quality) to all hex, ie "full screen". and this should remain consistent when one resizes the grid (either makes it smaller or larger vertically and/or horizontally) thanks for reading all these, especially for fighting through my rusty English :P
My group just started using Roll20 tonight. We created characters and played with them and the journal feature and tokens. One thing we wanted was a Name box for tokens. When we had 9 tokens up, it was hard to remember who was who. With monsters added, it oculd be very confusing. I found I could NOT upload an image to the handout section of the journal page. It loaded and loaded and loaded and never finished. We didn't try macros much, but one player could not do anything except roll dice; when he tried another macro (plain text) it gave him an error message.
Hi @Gillian Wiseman Currently, the macro function can only accept command text, such as rolls and emotes. Token names and the the ability to use regular text in macros are both on the roadmap though, so stay tuned. :) The handout glitch is a new one to me, could you give me a couple details so I can try and help you figure out what went wrong? What type of image file was it, and was it very large? Can you give me your Operating System and browser type & version? (If you're not sure, go to <a href="http://supportdetails.com/" rel="nofollow">http://supportdetails.com/</a> to find out) Was it just one specific image that you weren't able to upload to the journal? Could you try a different one, so we can eliminate it being a problem with that specific file? Thanks
Just finished my first game with my group on roll20 and aside from a few bugs with people getting disconnected at random we had a good old time. one thing that i found annoying was the fact that the system never remembered that i dont want to show video only voice. but hey every system has bugs thats why its in beta.
We just finished our first actual play session. Couldn't get the in-game voice to work, so we fell back to using Skype. There was also an issue with chat - no one could type to anyone else, including dice - but closing and coming back in fixed it. The setup prior was pretty straightforward. I used the Beginner Box as a basis, so was able to easily drag in the flip mat graphic and token graphics. All in all, everything went really well. Even with the bugs, we probably spent half the time we tend to using Maptool (java problems or whatnot). We're all definitely looking forward to next week.
Tried this for the first time today. Worked a treat, although we didn't bother with video chat (I was using a computer that doesn't have a cam or mic), but overall I'm excited to use this program. I'd like to see a way that I could import my own custom soundtrack. Perhaps via Dropbox or something? This would be great for a pirate campaign filled with awesome piratey music.
I tested this with another player for the first time Saturday. It was simply amazing. Both of us just kept commenting about how wonderful it was to finally be able to have a real tabletop experience with the added bonus of all the goodies that come with web technology (e.g. health bars and markers for tokens, fog of war, etc.). In all seriousness, you guys have really done a great thing here. Hats off to you, gents. I am really looking forward for what you have in store. As an aside, the video and audio were fine, though earlier when I was testing it out alone I did notice a lot of lag and missed frames that others have mentioned on this thread. Since I was using roll20 as part of google hangouts, it makes sense that this was probably due to something on their end.
My group and I are running a Pathfinder 3.75 modified version of an old 3.5 setting called Dragonstar. So, yeah, we are beta testing a rule system in the beta test for Roll20 for maximum confusion. As far as Roll20 is concerned each one of my players has commented that Roll20 is possibly the most complete and fully functioning beta they have ever participated in. Interface is awesome works really well and is very simple. One of my players is a graphics designer and he has been sending me artwork in varied shapes, sizes, and formats to test things. We are even going to test an animated .gif so if Roll20 crashes Sunday around 2, my bad. Here is what I would like to see. -More flexibility with map creation. Right now when you try to drop an image or an icon, it snaps to a particular alignment or placing. When using numerous images to create a map and terrain this can be somewhat bothersome. Especially considering that if I want to place any walls I have to place them the middle of a 5ft area as opposed to on a grid line. -More flexible drawing tools Right now you can kind of draw free hand which is great, but I would like to see a full range of draw tools, similar to what you might get in MS Paint. Makes it easy to snap off a fireball template. -The ability to make radius aura's Aura's right now are in a box with width and height. I'd like to be able to toggle that to be a radius. -Customize token values. Right now the three little orbs above tokens, represent three number values with three colors. I'd like the ability to customize the number and coloration.
Another note The ability to lock objects would be awesome. so that i don't accidently drag half my map and cover everything not cover everything on the maps and backgrounds layer. Also better definition in layers would be nice. i have found its easier to keep track of things if they are on numerous layers. what i would like to see using a tavern as the setting. Map Layer - for backgrounds and generally where events will take place - Floor boards of bar Terrain Layer- Any kind of an object that might catch the players eye - Bar stools, bar, etc Tokens - For tokens and other objects that might have to move - Players and npc

Try pressing 'alt' when manipulating objects to move/rotate them independent of the grid.
So ... my Shadowrun group met last week here for the first time (we had been using another web based service). We were VERY impressed. We were running SRM01-01, and I uploaded the maps to the Seattle Westin one to each page. Changing back and forth went VERY smoothly! The ability for people to move their OWN tokens without interfering with the background image / other people's tokens was awesome! Tokbox did not like two of my players' camera setups (they're married and have identical laptops), and it crashed flash and required reload several times under Linux. We use mumble for voice chat since we're all familiar with it, so that was no biggie. One thing that would be nice would be a "move token to page" option so that when players transition from one page to another, the GM doesn't have to copy and paste a bunch of tokens but can handle it on the fly as necessary. A minor glitch, but would have been nice. Until token labels are created, I think I'm going to customize some tokens with text ... but that's an easy enough workaround. Thanks for all the hard work on this!
Recently I took one of my Play by Post games from Roleplay Online and started running combat in Google+ Hangouts. This required G+, RPOL, and Maptools to do what Roll20 seems able to do alone. I have just set up my campaign and have 3 battle maps ready to use when needed. I can't wait for our first session. Thank you Devs.
First game with Roll20 I loved it. I switched from D20Pro to try Roll20. From a DM perspective I really like how much faster it is to create a game and add maps and tokens. My players liked it and we really appreciate your hard work so far. A few suggestions however. 1. Allow the players avatar color to match the back ground in the chat window that way it is easier to tell who is rolling or typing. 2. Make it so that each page has its own turn tracker so as the GM I can pre roll initiative for the monsters and all I have to do is add in the players during the game. As of now when I create a new turn order on a new page it erases the previous pages turn order. (I may be doing something wrong) 3. When I copy players from the right side of a larger map to a different smaller map the will not show up since it pastes them where they where located on the old map. Way over to the right beyond the current smaller maps borders. Paste should paste where my mouse pointer is. 4. Macros need to be able to be transfered from campaign to campaign my players are making some very complicated macros and they are going to be very upset when we start the next module (which I am building a new campaign for to keep everything separate) and they have to remake all of their Macros. 5. One player requested the map pan tool be activated via right mouse click or some other hot key. So that moving the map would be more like how it works in D20Pro. Also mouse wheel zoom in/out would be nice. Keep up the awesome work I am looking forward to a premium account and future improvements.(Mostly the light radius feature) I think we are going to make the switch for good it really brings the table top feel back to the online play.
I just took Roll20 for a spin with five friends and we all agree that it is a vast improvement over similar programs we have tried to use in the past. The single best feature is our ability to set up a map and tokens without having to plow through all of the networking headaches before being able to have fun. We enjoy the variety of customization and labeling available to tokens, as well as the excellent Character and Handouts features. Outside of my profession as a playtester, I design board and card games in my spare time, and was especially excited to find a way to share designs with friends who I couldn't meet face-to-face. The card deck feature has piqued my interest because it could allow prototyping of a much wider variety of systems outside of pen-and-paper RPGs. I would absolutely love to see a feature implemented for hands of cards that players could manipulate. I see there is a thread about it with excellent suggestions here: <a href="http://community.roll20.net/discussion/566/adding-hands-to-the-deck-feature" rel="nofollow">http://community.roll20.net/discussion/566/adding-hands-to-the-deck-feature</a> The response from a member from the Roll20 team that card decks will be improved is definitely exciting! It would also be fantastic if a GM could set a permission to allow any player to drag-and-drop new tokens and set pieces onto the board. This would be especially handy in wargaming scenarios (which I've heard some chatter about) where players wouldn't have to worry about keeping all of the pieces of different armies saved onto their drive if they didn't want to field them. My group and I look forward to using Roll20 as a testbed for game design, as well as playing RPGs and perhaps eventually strategy games as we use workarounds for the current card deck limitations. I only wish I had known about it before the Kickstarter campaign ended, but I am assuming there will be some sort of donation/store option after beta ends. Cheers!
I had a great time yesterday running a campaign setup. Took me about three hours to set up a four-hour combat-heavy session, but a lot of that was learnign the tool. Even through the session last night, I found my brain mapping more to the UI. Overall, it is the best tool I have used for virtual tabletopping. I am going to be moving all my combat-session content into it, and will probably use it for a combo virtual whiteboard/mood setting tool on more RP-heavy sessions. Overall, I am incredibly impressed. The VOIP wasn't great, with several flash container crashes, but we just backeded skype to address that, and rolled right on. A+ work.
I found it to be pretty awesome. Very fast responses to anything moved, very smooth running generally, overall had a great feel to it. One thing I had a problem with was aligning the map to the grid; I felt it snapped to certain places, and I couldn't get it just right to fit on the grid. Also, music integration - Would have been nice to be able to choose from a few other sources (Self upload, perhaps youtube suggested somebody else, eh)
I ran a GURPS Fantasy session, including a tactical combat. It worked pretty well, even for the player using a netbook.
(. . .) -More flexible drawing tools Right now you can kind of draw free hand which is great, but I would like to see a full range of draw tools, similar to what you might get in MS Paint. Makes it easy to snap off a fireball template. I would want pressure sensitivity to the brush for making good quality on the fly sketches in any Roll20 tab. -Customize token values. Right now the three little orbs above tokens, represent three number values with three colors. I'd like the ability to customize the number and coloration. Good idea. I was also thinking about this ("Why three orbs?"). Keep in mind that you can post any of these ideas in the Suggestions & Ideas (Beta) forum here.
one thing that i found annoying was the fact that the system never remembered that i dont want to show video only voice. but hey every system has bugs thats why its in beta. Agreed, that is annoying. However it has been reported as a bug: the app must keep the last configuration regarding video, voice, and player avatar sizes.
First Impressions are -AWESOME-. Did my first session of it tonight with one of my groups who doesn't have a gaming board, and this thing worked out perfectly. Gonna be using it for my other group soon, as making maps with it is far, far easier than doing it by hand. 10/10
Tried this for the first time. Overall, pretty neat, but I'm very frustrated with one thing. I'm a player in another DM's game. There is a character that is controlled by me and my roll20 account. Why can't I just have a hyperlink to that game on my roll20.net home page? It would make things so much easier. I tried bookmarking my buddy's game, but since it redirects to app.roll20.net/editor, I just ended up bookmarking my own test game. I feel like a dolt for constantly having to ask for a link to that one game.
