Can a DM also play a character?

Hello, I am pretty new to TTRPGs. I play with another group totaling 6, and our DM is our healer also (cleric). This is the sum total of my DND experience, so when I decided other's to be incapable time-wise of being DM, I took it on myself. So when someone told me DM (or GMs) don't have characters I was quite confused (I own a Player's handbook, MM, and DMG, and thoroughly reading them. I bought the pre-made game for a work-up "Storm Giants..."-something. Please advise. I am very good at avoiding meta-gaming, do you think this is an issue? Should I abandon my character?
In my opinion, this would not be an issue. From the Roll20 Community Code of Conduct : The Roll20 Forums exist to discuss topics directly related to the use of the Roll20 program. Anything that more fittingly could be discussed on another website SHOULD be discussed there. Here are some good places to continue this conversation: /r/rpg /r/dnd /r/dndnext
