Eye in the Sky

"It has been a long but productive week." Gahldra spent the entire week in the wizard's inner sanctum walking through the long, tedious ritual required to make contact with the supernatural. She cut long gashes into her arms, legs and body and drained her own blood until she could barely stand. Fuel for the magic. Naked and shivering, trembling more like, her eyes went dark. At first she was unsure if she was fainting from pain and blood loss, but then she suddenly she found herself quite awake, surrounded by the stench and mire of an endless bog. She had made contact. With what, she could not know, but the ritual had worked! Soon the creature that would be her patron revealed itself from the smoggy darkness... one... giant... eye... at a time. It was Bobugbubilz: he demon lord of amphibians. She immediately began to falter but, to her surprise, the demon lord seemed pleased to see her! It seemed thrilled by the pact and seemed happy to lend her its power. It even granted her a gift! The gift of underwater sight... and a super-enlarged set of toad's eyes to go with it! Maybe she will grow into them someday... Haggard, frail and deformed, Gahldra emerged from the summoning chamber to find the party discussing strange and cryptic dreams they have been having during their nice, relaxing stay in the wizards tower. The party decided to pursue their dreams to the ends of the earth. The wizard informed the gathering soon thereafter that they had overstayed their welcome and offered to open them a portal to a great interplanar library where they may find the answers to their cryptic dreams. After a resigned sigh, Gahldra hobbled through with her comrades despite her desperate need of bed rest. The portal opened to a strange otherworldly dimension with a path that seemed to lead into the center of an exploding star. The wizard's eye was set low in the sky like a super-moon. The party headed off towards the blinding light. After some time, another portal opened above the party spewing forth a small horde of dragon-pig-demons apparently called razorbacks. Gahldra apprehensively shot an eye towards the Flayed Man to see him quickly unsheathe his long swords with a look on his face betraying his guilt and horror. She knew this tag along would cause them problems some day... and it seemed that today was one of those days. Gahldra and the party, adversely affected by their travel through space-time, floundered with their magic and weapons for the duration of the fight. Gahldra, while trying to channel her fire spell, misfired and ignited her gear and meager treasure! Then, when the inevitable war-visions assaulted her mind (as they always do), she lashed back in her short-tempered fury at the tempest and found that it actually stopped its torment. She had won out over the battle god and his bloody memories! "Amazing how much more simple the spell seems without the memories of a desperate dying god assaulting your consciousness..."

But with great victory comes great sacrifice. Gahldra discovered this shortly after her triumph over the battle-visions when a razorback let out a squeal that immediately fried the circuits in her brain. The clerics prayed to their gods in an attempt to save her and finally did so, but only after numerous discouraging attempts. Meanwhile, one of the creatures riding the razorbacks slashed Vilga's throat and the clerics, still trying to revive Gahldra, were unable to get to her in time. Her blood pooled in the path while the remaining companions finished off the last of the enemy. Gahldra buried her chaotic, outspoken friend that day in the space between two worlds while the corpses of the pig-god's minions were left to rot. "Damned be the flayed man who stands silently before me now... May the guilt of Vilga's death rest on his shoulders." The companions pressed on to find a cave in the distance. It seemed the dreamers recognized the place from their dreams so the party left the main path to investigate. They found a hidden hallway leading deeper in and squeezed their way through the tight entrance. Inside, a ghostly jester seemed to lead them on down the hallway and the companions followed. Eventually the hallway gave way to a bright light that turned out to be a portal to a moonlit clearing on the top of a high ridge. It overlooked a trampled field with a building and a distant tower. It was a scene of serenity and beauty. Looking around, the jester was nowhere to be found and the cave had disappeared! The group, exhausted from the relatively short day of travel, decided to bed down for the night on the ridge.
