Very large. How large? How many .pngs? Does edit mean create? archive maps you aren't using, for a start.

Is the map one large piece, or multiple smaller pieces laid together? If its the latter, one way to improved performance is to stitch the pieces together into one large image via Photoshop or Gimp or the like.
