Character stat/skill check rolls 2 dice/numbers?

I'm playing a 5e campaign with a friend being the gm and we don't understand this mechanic. Rolling a stat or skill check should just be 1d20 +modifier, vs the gm's 1d20 when I click a stat or skill to roll a check though, it rolls this twice and gives me two checks. can anyone explain this?

Advantage and Disadvantage Adv you roll 2 die and keep the best Dis you roll 2 for and keep the worst.
Ahh, thank you! what determines if I'm rolling for an advantage or disadvantage?
Advantage and disadvantage are determined by lots of different rules, such as Inspiration, flanking or a spell effect. If it bothers you and if you're using the OGL sheet you can switch the sheet settings to toggle the dice rolls to "always roll advantage", "never roll advantage", or "query advantage".
A lot of people just let it roll both dice just in case they forget something that would have given them advantage or caused disadvantage. You always use the left roll normally.
